Nikita pressed her ear against the door and heard a sound that was tearing her heart inside out – Adam crying. She pressed her hand to the door and finally solidly knocked. “Adam?”
“GO AWAY!”
Nikita turned her head away from the door, but didn’t leave. She knocked again. “Adam... I want to talk to you.”
“I said go away!” Adam fired back, but not nearly as loud as the first scream. Nikita knocked as she then dropped her hand to the door knob. “Adam… I’m coming in now…”
“No!” Adam stated even as Nikita turned the knob and found that Adam had not locked his door. She stood there as Adam glared at her for a second before turning away. “Don’t come in here to tell me that I was wrong for yelling at Sabina…”
“I wasn’t going-“
“Because I know that I was wrong… I should have explained it to her in a better way… just as my dad and you have been asking me to do for weeks… “ Adam continued and Nikita pushed the door closed and waited for Adam to look at her again. “I am not here to tell you that you were wrong.”
“You aren’t?” Adam asked and Nikita shook her head as she leaned against the door and moved to sit down on the floor to look up at Adam. “I wish that maybe it would have been done in another manner… but you did what you had to do for Sabina to finally listen.”
“I shouldn’t have had to do that!” Adam fired back with anger-laced words. Nikita nodded her head. “I know that you believe that I could have done something about this, Adam. You believe that your dad could do something about it. You probably don’t believe us all the times that we told you that we had been telling Sabina… but it wasn’t going to stop Sabina until she heard it from you.”
Adam frowned as he rubbed his hands along his face. “I didn’t mean to yell… but she just… pushed my final button.”
“I’m surprised that it took you this long. It shows how strong and mature you have been,” Nikita admitted as she pulled her knees up and shifted against the door. “And I appreciate that you told Sabina that you loved me like a mother. You didn’t need to do that.”
Adam dropped his hand and tilted his head to the other side. “But that was the truth.”
Nikita swallowed and looked at Adam. “I never deserve the love from you like you would give your mother. I’m not her. I’m nowhere near like Elena and I never will be.”
“I’m not comparing you,” Adam shrugged his shoulders.
Nikita swallowed hard as she wanted away from this point of pain that she found herself in right now. She rubbed a hand up to her knee and squeezed it. “It’s ok to really miss her, Adam. I don’t want you to forget her.”
“I’ll never forget her,” Adam blinked back tears as he said those words. “But I love you like I do her, Nikita.”
Nikita pressed that hand that was on her knee to her chest hard. She hadn’t expected this conversation at all. “You don’t have to say that for my sake or for Sabina’s sake.”
“It’s the truth,” Adam sighed as he stood up and moved towards the door. He sat down and leaned against the wall. “And maybe Sabina has a point… because I don’t think of her as a half-sister... she is my sister…”
“Adam, I don’t want to make you do anything like what Sabina wants you too. I like that you call me Nikita.”
Adam chuckled and looked up at the ceiling. “I’ve called you Nikita for too long that I probably couldn’t stop it either way.”
Nikita laughed slightly as she looked around the room and looked at Adam. “It has been hard with Sabina in the house. I don’t want you to think that you aren’t as equally important.”
“I don’t think that…”
“Adam,” Nikita interrupted with a shake her head. “Promise me that you’ll tell me if I am not spending enough time with you and too much time with Sabina.”
“She is younger, Nikita. Sabina never has had a mom or a dad… so she needs you more than me. I’m older and Sabina needs –“
“Adam,” Nikita interrupted again and Adam stopped. Nikita reached over and ruffled his hair. “Promise me.”
“I’ll leave you an email,” Adam wryly spoke as he winked. Nikita rolled her eyes. “That’s better than you trying to crash a system or two of mine.”
“The one in Montreal is driving me nuts,” Adam replied.
“You just think that it is in Montreal.”
Adam shifted with his mouth open. Nikita shrugged her shoulders with a wickedly bright smile. “I still am well ahead of you, Adam.”
“Damn.”
Nikita glared at Adam and he shrugged his shoulders slightly. Nikita took his and held it lightly. “You have to promise me a couple things about Sabina…”
“You want me to apologize.”
“No,” Nikita shook her head from side to side. “I won’t make you do that. You and Sabina have to work this out and you’ll figure it out. But that isn’t what I have to ask you about…”
“Why don’t I like the sound of this?”
Nikita studied Adam and allowed him to pull his hand away. “You can’t be showing her how to hack when you are showing her stuff on the computer.”
“I’m not!” Adam defensively spoke. Nikita looked into Adam’s eyes and knew that he hadn’t been showing Sabina these things yet. “You won’t show her in the future, either.”
“She has no need to know,” Adam declared and Nikita felt some relief. “And…”
“There is more?” Adam asked as he rolled his eyes. “You are asking for a lot, Nikita.”
“It’s about school,” Nikita commented. When Adam wrinkled his eyes Nikita continued. “I would you prefer that you don’t tell Sabina more about the elementary school. We aren’t sure how Sabina is going to be going to school. She could skip a lot of grades…”
“But I didn’t skip grades. You two can just give her extra assignments,” Adam suggested what he thought would work. It had been perfect for him and he didn’t understand why it wouldn’t work for Sabina. “She needs to go to school. She was stuck in kindergarten for two years!”
“Adam,” Nikita sighed. “We are working on some options…”
“Like homeschooling?” Adam asked and Nikita nodded her head slightly. “If we can find a teacher.”
“So that is why you are looking for Reagan?” Adam questioned and Nikita couldn’t stop but flinch. “I asked you not to hack my stuff, Adam… I can’t believe…”
“I overhead you talking to my dad after dinner last night,” Adam corrected quickly. Nikita shifted and straightened her legs. Nikita studied Adam and then pressed her lips together in thought. She hadn’t thought that Adam would find this out.
“You are concerned about Lisa’s reaction,” Adam whispered as he leaned back. Nikita nodded her head. “Reagan is the one adult that I got out that had anything to do with the children… she was their teacher and had nothing to do with what was going on.”
“Is she still a teacher?”
“I haven’t found her,” Nikita shook her head slightly. “I’m not sure if I want to find her.”
“I’m sure that Lisa would understand,” Adam commented and Nikita sighed. “Well, it won’t matter if I can’t find her…. So for now, please don’t drum up excitement about school any more with Sabina. I don’t want her to be heartbroken if she doesn’t go.”
Adam nodded his head up and down. He didn’t like the idea. He thought that it would be good for Sabina to go to school. She needed it. Everyone needed her to go to school. But Adam would do as he was asked, for now.
