“Hey, look… it’s the language geek,” the boy laughed as he slapped his other friend’s shoulder while pushing away from the locker. The other boy laughed too. “I thought he was the math geek.”
“A geek is a geek… or is a geek a nerd?” the boy stepped forward and blocked Adam’s way. “You are a teacher’s pet already too…”
Adam just looked at the boy and didn’t react. Just like his father had taught him, although inside Adam had already plotted four ways that he could bring this older teenager down to his knees in under a minute. But that wasn’t the right thing to do right now.
Violence was not an answer.
“Agreeing that it is good to have the Angel in homeroom… blah, blah, blah…” the friend stated as he shook his head. “Teacher pets are so middle school.”
Adam stood there as both of them pushed their shoulders into him as they walked passed him. He wasn’t going to complain about this to anyone. He knew that this could happen when he had asked his father to test out of some of the classes that were boring so he could be more challenged in high school. He just didn’t expect it on the second day of school.
Adam started down the hallway and smiled at the familiar person in front of him. “Hi, Lisa.”
Lisa turned and closed her locker. She pushed her hands into her pockets. “Adam… good morning.”
“Are you on the way to Chinese class?” Adam inquired as he pushed the book bag up his shoulder more. He had proven that he was fluent in French and Spanish to the school and was able to get put into the Chinese class as a freshman when the class was normally only open to sophomores or above. He liked it because he had class with Lisa.
“Ah… I changed my classes some,” Lisa replied as she looked up and down the hallway. “I’m now in a creative writing class for the next period.”
Adam blinked and he was stunned. “Oh… I thought you wanted to learn Chinese too.”
“Adam, it was just really different being in that class… it didn’t feel right,” Lisa stated and Adam shifted his weight. “Well… I can still walk with you from lunch to Calculus.”
Lisa hesitated and then sighed. “Adam… I’d rather not.”
Adam was confused and hurt. “What?”
“Adam, I like you as a friend… but this is hard being in school. School is really hard for me… and being such close friends to a freshman while already being the new girl… it’s making it harder,” Lisa explained as she leaned back against her locker. “We can be friends outside of school…”
“Ah… yeah…” Adam nodded his head up and down while he wanted to scream at her that it was crazy. “I guess… you don’t want to walk home together today then either…”
“I’m going over to the elementary school to volunteer there before Rhoda picks me up to do some more shopping,” Lisa outlined and Adam took a couple steps away as he shrugged his shoulders. “I was going to have to do something after school too… so… I guess I’ll talk to you later… maybe…”
Lisa saw the hurt face and groaned. “Adam…”
“No,” Adam snapped as he shook his head from side to side. “I get it, Lisa. I’m fine with it.”
Lisa smiled at Adam and pushed away from her locker, heading towards the door of the new room that she was assigned to for her creative writing class. Adam glanced as she waved at a couple of the girls who were waiting to go in. The boys who had been teasing him were standing there, flirting with the girls and all started to look Lisa up and down.
“Get out of the way geek,” another upperclassman hissed as he bumped into Adam pushing away from the bulletin board. “It isn’t like you are going to sign up for football.”
Adam watched as the letterman jacket vanished in the crowd. He glanced at the bulletin board, knowing that he wasn’t about to strap on a helmet and play football to try to fit in. It wasn’t his thing to do. He regretted taking the advanced classes and leaving his baseball buddies behind. His father had warned him about this.
But before turning away to go to class, Adam saw the signup sheet for the soccer team. He thought about it and then signed up for it. He turned his head to see Lisa touching one of the older boys and swallowed hard. He may be a geek, but everyone in this school had to learn that he was so much more than a geek.
