Jason looked around the house and saw Nikita as she turned from the stove. She raised the pot of coffee and Jason nodded his head. He looked around and settled down. “Where is everyone else?”
“Adam went to the skating rink with his father,” Nikita answered as she poured the coffee and then took the mug to Jason. She then pulled out a plate from the cupboard and put it down on the table. “I believe that these were your favorites.”
Jason grinned at the cookies and nodded his head. “Yep.”
“Your brother really liked Oreos,” Nikita wistfully spoke as she retrieved a cup of tea and sat down at the corner of the table and looked at Jason.
“I like homemade,” Jason winked as he took a cookie and quickly ate it. He swooned and leaned back in the chair. He sipped his coffee and then looked at Nikita. “I take it that Davenport is out…”
“He has some other work,” Nikita replied as she blinked her blue eyes.
“And you wanted the house empty?” Jason inquired and Nikita shook her head from side to side. “Michael knows that you are here.”
Jason wasn’t so sure about that but he didn’t say anything. Instead he took another cookie and then placed the cup down on the table. “So…”
“Obviously I wanted to talk about looking for my daughter,” Nikita replied without beating around the bush. Jason raised an eyebrow and nodded his head. “I thought you were waiting until the New Year.”
“We have a wedding in two days. .. and I think talking about it today isn’t really starting ahead of time,” Nikita shrugged her shoulders slightly. She rubbed her hands and then cupped her tea as she leaned forward. “Plus, I don’t trust myself with my systems at this point.”
“Your systems…”
“The ones that I gave you access too after we retrieved Veronica,” Nikita replied as she spoke pass the flash of tension that she had. “I gave you that control for a reason… I can easily slip back to that… to how I was… before…”
Jason cleared his throat and nodded his head up and down. “I get it.”
Nikita paused and looked at Jason. How she wished it was Birkoff! Nikita swallowed passed the guilt of thinking that way and pushed her hands from the cup to her knees, afraid that she would break if she continued to grasp the cup. “You need to look up the case… and find out which US Marshall hasn’t had new cases since then…”
“What?” Jason inquired as he frowned. “Wouldn’t we want to know…”
“No,” Nikita shook her head from side to side. “They are protecting children so they would probably make it so that the US Marshall in charge had retired or left the agency… the person who is connected won’t look like they are active at all.”
“That doesn’t get us…”
“It will,” Nikita interrupted as she started to feel her legs starting to bounce with nerves. “And then you’ll find some sort of resource behind that US Marshall’s name that will contain a folder that will contain DNA samples…. That we can then compare.”
“Compare to you and Michael?”
“Compare to my daughter’s DNA,” Nikita corrected with a flash of heat crossing her eyes. “I won’t jump to any conclusions unless it’s 100%, Jason.”
Jason picked up a cookie and turned it in his fingers. “You know that this is a long shot.”
Nikita looked away and then looked to the counter. “We also have to make sure that the Mob family is out of the loop now...”
“You are afraid that she is with them?”
“She won’t be,” Nikita shook her head from side to side. “I would know if that happened… and I don’t feel that the Mob has my daughter… that wouldn’t have happened.”
“Really?”
“They won’t accept anything less than 100%, Jason,” Nikita theorized as she glared at him. He exhaled and took a bite of the cookie. He swallowed hard and looked at Nikita carefully. “You know that this isn’t going to be easy…”
“The mob will be harder to get information out of than the government,” Nikita shrugged her shoulders. Jason shook his head. “I have to get thru lots of protocols… especially with the Marshal Service, Nikita. It isn’t going to be easy at all.”
“If you didn’t have my system,” Nikita interrupted Jason with a firm look that stopped him.
God she reminded him of how she was when she was Operations.
“I didn’t have the kind of connection into the mob systems… however someone from the government is probably already connected in…” Nikita spoke out the plan. Jason frowned. She could have done a lot of this.
“Ah… I guess you want this soon,” Jason hesitated. Nikita frowned and stood up. “I’m not asking you to do it overnight, Jason. I just want you to get started.”
Jason rolled his eyes to look at Nikita. “Really?”
“We aren’t in Section,” Nikita pointed out as she looked at Jason and closed her eyes for a moment.
Birkoff stretched his arms over his head and jumped as he saw Nikita standing there. “Aren’t you on mandatory downtime?”
“What?” Nikita questioned as she stood there and looked at him. Birkoff looked at Nikita and pulled out a package of Oreos. He lifted one and extended his hand towards Nikita. “Want one?”
Nikita shook her head from side to side. Birkoff twisted it and licked it before squishing it all together again. “I don’t eat them the same way all the time.”
Nikita stepped forward and looked from side to side. “Why did you look at me like it was good to have downtime?”
“It’s nice to get outside of Section,” Birkoff laughed as he looked around before pulling up a screen. “See… that’s where I’m going to go when I get some downtime….”
“That’s the Eiffel Tower.”
“I’ve never been there,” Birkoff shrugged his shoulders.
“We are in Paris, Birkoff,” Nikita spoke and he nodded his head. “I always mean to go when I have downtime… I usually get stuck in some sort of game… or a mission that I don’t trust anyone else to run… especially when you are…”
Nikita swallowed hard and stood up. “We aren’t truly on downtime. We are always in Section, even if we are out.”
“Nikita?” Jason inquired as she shook her head. She blinked her eyes. “It’s nothing Jason.”
“You were thinking of Birkoff,” Jason dropped his head as he stood up. “I’ll never be him.”
“I’m not asking you to be,” Nikita rasped and Jason shoved his hands into his pockets. He knew that right now as the time to change the subject. “Are you ready for the wedding?”
Nikita smiled as she was thankful for Jason’s change of topic. “I got my midnight blue dress as requested.”
“I’m to meet Daisy to help her,” Jason commented as he glanced at his watch. “I should go meet her.”
“Wait,” Nikita jumped as she turned back to the cupboard. She took the box and then turned to look at Jason. “Do you want some cookies to go?”
