Whitney walked out of the office and looked at Nikita as she was at the computer, criticizing her own work, which Whitney had to say was very good. “How do you feel like visiting the zoo?”
Nikita turned her head and blinked her eyes. “That sounds like a great learning opportunity. It’s been a while since we did field work… I’ve been doing so many assignments.”
Whitney shook her head from side to side. “It’s not a learning opportunity… the zoo wants to hire you.”
“I’m sure that you mean that they want to hire you,” Nikita turned in the chair as she smirked. “You can’t keep having me do the assignments… someone will catch on.”
“I’ve told them all that they were hiring my new associate,” Whitney admitted to the lie that she had only told Nikita. She watched as Nikita swallowed hard. “Come on, Nikita…. You have your own style. The pictures that you don’t like, you don’t like them because they aren’t good imitations of my work and style.”
Nikita rubbed her neck and shook her head. “No…”
“Nikita,” Whitney shook her head slightly. “You know how hard it has been for me to hold a camera… The arthritis in my hands is getting worse. I can help you take this over… I can be a manager…”
“I don’t want full time work,” Nikita shook her head back and forth. “And I don’t need you to do this for me…”
“You are doing this for yourself,” Whitney pointed out as she pulled a chair over towards the computer. She opened up a folder and opened up a folder of pictures that Nikita had thought that she had disposed off but Whitney could pull a trick or two. “You don’t always empty your memory cards.”
Nikita stared at the picture of the baptism and swallowed hard. “There was a glare…”
“Look again,” Whitney pointed at the screen. Nikita looked at the image and started to nod her head up and down slightly. That was when Whitney showed the next image.
And the next.
And the next.
And fifty more.
“I know that you haven’t taken animal pictures before… and that is all that they are looking for to start with…” Whitney explained as she turned the monitor off and looked at Nikita. “I’ll never ask you to do a girl’s birthday party… I’ll never accept one… but don’t make it too hard to get you work.”
Nikita looked at Whitney and exhaled slowly. “I don’t want a busy schedule… I don’t want to work full time… I only want one thing a week… I have other things I have to do.”
Whitney nodded her head up and down.”I completely understand that.”
The door opened and Nikita turned while Whitney stood up. “Hi…. We weren’t expecting anyone today…”
“Daisy,” Nikita spoke as she stood up. “What are you doing here?”
“I need your help with Jason,” Daisy stepped forward a bit more so the door would close. Whitney cleared her throat as she stepped away. “I’m going to go… and call the zoo back and start looking at possible dates…”
Nikita mouthed the words thank you as Whitney left her with Daisy. Nikita turned and indicated that Daisy could sit down where Whitney had just gotten up from. “I haven’t talked to Jason in a while…”
“And I need you to… because he won’t leave his apartment… and he just calls me to bring him pizza… or Code Red Mountain Dew… and he isn’t like he used to be,” Daisy rushed out while she shook her head from side to side. She looked at Nikita and winced. “He is completely obsessed over whatever he is doing for you… and you need to call him off.”
Nikita leaned forward while trying to remain calm. “I asked him to help me with something… but I thought he was doing it on the side, Daisy.”
“I don’t even think he is doing real work anymore… and whenever I say that we should go outside… just for a walk around the block… he says something about how Birkoff would have already had this done for you… and I don’t know who Birkoff is and why he can’t do it!”
Nikita felt a pain go thru her chest and she blinked back tears. “He… he was Jason’s twin brother… and they were separated… it wasn’t… pretty…”
“What?” Daisy questioned as she shook her head. “He told me about an aunt… but said that he couldn’t tell me anything more… “
Standing up, Nikita tried to calm down. This wasn’t necessary. There was a way for Jason to start telling Daisy these things. She rolled her shoulders back and looked at Daisy. “I want you to know… I need his help but I never would advocate him doing this to his life.”
Daisy nodded her head. “That’s what I thought.”
Nikita pushed both of her hands against her forehead. Daisy needed her help with Jason and it scared her. She felt her hands shaking but she didn’t let Daisy see it.
“He… he isn’t himself…” Daisy rasped as she could sense that Nikita wasn’t sure what to do. “I know that you know him… that he respects you… and that you’ve been completely different… I need that for Jason now.”
Turning, Nikita nodded her head. “I need to see him.”
“Ok… I’ll let him know…”
“No,” Nikita shook her head. “We go to him… now… right now to his place.”
