Jason walked up the gravel path and stared at the house. This wasn’t the place that he would have picked for Walter to start with. In ways, it felt like Walter’s summer cabin or a fishing cabin. But it seemed odd for the older man to pick this as his primary residence – although he was spending more and more time coming into town.
Knowing that he couldn’t put this off, Jason jogged up the stairs as he took the sunglasses off. He knocked at the door and stepped back, looking around.
“Hey,” Walter spoke as he opened the door. Jason blinked his eyes as he looked back at Walter and internally smiled. Walter was thinking of Birkoff.
“Thanks for agreeing to this,” Jason mumbled as he shoved his sunglasses into his pocket and looked around. “Is it warm enough to stay out here?”
“I have coffee brewing,” Walter motioned and Jason stepped into the house. It was charming.
But not what Jason would consider to be Walter.
“The previous owner left most of the furnishings,” Walter spoke as he got into the kitchen and looked around. “I’m not really for the apple motif.”
Jason nervously chuckled as he nodded his head. This made sense now. “Why haven’t you moved back into the city?”
“I’ve been looking,” Walter admitted as he pulled out mugs and stopped. “Sugar? Cream?”
“Straight,” Jason replied as he rubbed the back of his neck. “I’m guessing that Birkoff took both…”
“Never drank coffee,” Walter chuckled as he shook his head. “Soda pop was his beverage of choice.”
Jason pulled out a chair as he nodded his head. He had been told that before. He exhaled as the coffee was soon in front of him and Walter was taking a big gulp. Suddenly, he wasn’t sure if this was right. He didn’t want to make Walter hurt more. He had to be having a tough enough time with Beatrice, the twin sister of his wife, being around. It was hard to know that she was his aunt, but he couldn’t imagine what it would be like to have a wife that died at the hands of Section to find out that she had a twin sister.
“You’ve seen Beatrice?” Walter inquired as he leaned back in his chair. He felt so guilty for not learning more about Jason when they were in Section. Walter had worked so hard in trying to teach Jason about what Birkoff would do that he didn’t really allow Jason to be Jason.
Jason still didn’t pick up his coffee. He stared at it and he exhaled. “Daisy made me.”
“Daisy is good for you,” Walter commented as he nodded his head up and down. “Got to be odd.”
“Has to be worse for you,” Jason pointed out and Walter shook his head. “She isn’t Belinda.”
“But you see me as Birkoff,” Jason snapped as he picked up the coffee. He took a long gulp as a way to let Walter process what he had said. But as Jason placed the mug down and looked at Walter, it was clear that Walter had anticipated this statement.
“That was wrong of me,” Walter sighed as he rubbed his neck. “But I had a much different type of relationship with Belinda… and physical was most of it… and I didn’t have that with your brother.”
“Ha-ha-ha,” Jason rolled his eyes and Walter leaned forward. “Seriously… I loved Belinda… but not like two other people… and that was Birkoff first… and then it was Nikita.”
“And Michael?”
“Michael wasn’t until much later,” Walter shook his head as he settled back in his chair. “Nikita had to tell me about Michael… and for the longest time… I didn’t quite believe her… I trusted Michael… and well, at first, he scared me… but the Michael you know… that wasn’t the man I first met. Thank god Nikita changed him.”
Jason slowly thought about the statement and traced his lips as he thought about what he was going to say. “So… Birkoff was different?”
“Your brother… was the first one that I allowed myself to pretty much have a friendship with in Section… as much as there could be one. I watched out for him… and I protected him… and that was what I tried to do for you… protect you… I just didn’t…”
“Get to know me,” Jason stated and Walter nodded his head up and down. “And I didn’t notice… Nikita feels awful because she could see it now… but back then… she was hiding a pregnancy while running Section… while closing Section... she feels awful that she didn’t correct it back then… to tell me to wake up… because that’s all I needed.”
Shifting in the seat, Jason turned his head to the side. “I don’t get it.”
“I never tried to make you Birkoff… but before Nikita was in control, I needed you to be Birkoff because that was what Operations expected you to be… and in order to protect you, I needed him to think that you were just like your brother… so it was easier to just drill into you what Birkoff would do.”
“He didn’t always listen to Operations,” Jason pointed out and Walter nodded his head. “That was Nikita’s doing.”
Jason chewed his lip while he looked around the room. “I know that I could have spoken up.”
“Now that sounds like something that Beatrice must have pointed out to you,” Walter arched a knowing eyebrow. He waited and Jason finally nodded his head up and down. “I guess… it wasn’t hard to pretend to be him… in ways.”
“I knew that you weren’t Birkoff… please trust me when I say that to you,” Walter whispered as he pulled his bandana off and twisted it into his hands. “And don’t take this the wrong way… but the way you are right now… this man who wants to fix things… and wants to help… and isn’t trying to get everything back out of the world after it was almost taken away from him… that’s the way I would want Birkoff to be if he was still here… because it’s a damn fine gentleman you are.”
Jason choked up slightly and finally lifted the coffee again to take another sip. “So… he liked Oreos?”
“Oh yeah… bribery was possible with Oreos…”
