Michael pulled up to the building and looked over at Nikita. “I should come in… I can be your boyfriend…”

“We’ll go to the fiancée route if this doesn’t go easily,” Nikita spoke as she clutched the papers and looked at Michael. “Do I look the role?”

“You’ll be fine… you are to be new to civilian life…” Michael replied as he looked at her. “Let me come.”

“Lisa doesn’t know you,” Nikita answered and then she swallowed. She reached over and carefully placed a kiss on Michael’s cheek. “If I call you in a half hour… we’ll have to stay longer than we want.”

“I’ll go get us checked into a hotel room,” Michael offered as Nikita started out of the car. If this was just a month ago, there was no way that he would be leaving her right now. But he knew that this was ok.

Nikita clutched onto the papers and walked up the stairs. She then started to rush, getting into the character she needed to be. She turned her head from side to side as she entered the building. “I need to find Lisa… Lisa Mohan… my… my niece… she was brought here…”

A woman behind the desk stood up and walked towards Nikita as a guard moved towards her. “Calm down, Miss…. I’m sure that we can help you…”

“I didn’t even know… that my sister… we had been estranged… I was in Iraq… and I just got out… I haven’t been back to the States for five days… and… my niece was in foster care… and the foster parents were killed…” Nikita spoke as she didn’t move towards the woman. She shook her head as she allowed the tears to flow. She noted the guard moving towards her and she pivoted and glared at him. “I’m not a threat!”

“We just need you to calm down…” the guard spoke as he lifted his hands in the air, not wanting a confrontation.

Nikita pushed her chin in the air. “You don’t scare me… and I don’t know why you are holding her here… in a jail? She didn’t do anything. She found them!”

There were more people heading towards her and Nikita barely glanced to note that someone had picked up the phone. She anticipated that they were calling for Detective Lynn Rowles, who was the woman who had been taking care of Lisa. Nikita knew exactly why Lisa was here and not somewhere else – they were scared for her safety.

“We are going to call someone… why don’t you take a few deep breathes… and I’ll check you into the guest registry…” the woman spoke slowly as she did not move any closer to Nikita. Nikita swallowed as she looked away from the guard. “Renee Walters… Weapons Sergeant… ah… Renee Walters…”

The woman looked at the guard and he folded his hands. It was clear that he had a sense of what Nikita had just revealed and she was thankful that he went at ease for the moment. Nikita rubbed her hand across her face. “I should have… I should have tried to get in contact with my sister… before I enlisted… but... but everything happened so fast… “

The elevator opened and a woman that Nikita need to be Detective Rowles stepped out with the man that Nikita had been anticipating would join her, Chief Detective Arnold Snowden. Nikita looked towards them and then moved with purpose. “Do you know where I can find Lisa Mohan?”

“Chief… this is Renee Walters… Weapons Sergeant,” the guard spoke up and the Chief stopped. “Special Forces?”

“The 10th…”

“Based out of Fort Carson,” Chief Snowden replied and Nikita nodded her head. “I came back… after extended duty… retired…”

“Time in Iraq?”

“In general,” Nikita choked out as she looked at the woman. “What does this have to do with Lisa? I wasn’t even notified that her mother passed away…”

“We knew nothing of you,” Detective Rowles spoke as she swallowed hard. “Lisa is safe… but we have to verify all of this.”

“Verify?” Nikita snapped and the Chief stepped forward. “You understand the process… you’ve lived in the system.”

“Special Forces,” Nikita spoke as she narrowed her eyes and then shook her head. “I didn’t expect to come home to this… I wanted to mend the bridges… be an aunt… and now… Lisa has found foster parents… dead?”

“Detective… I’ll call my contacts and verify identity. Why don’t you take Ms. Walters to see Lisa?” The chief spoke. Nikita fumbled her hands into her pocket and pulled out a wallet. “It should have enough… My paperwork for retirement is probably still on Major Thomas Negley’s desk. He wanted me to consider another tour…”

“I’ll take care of this,” Chief Snowden reached out and squeezed Nikita’s elbow. He motioned to Detective Rowles and Nikita felt a hand on her other elbow. She thought that this was good, but it was still a bit too tentative.

Detective Lynn Rowles wasn’t sure.

They were in the elevator and Nikita pulled out a handkerchief and wiped her face. “I’m sorry… I’m Renee Walters… Are you a detective here?”

“Yes,” Detective Rowles nodded her head up and down. “You can call me Lynn… Lynn Rowles.”

Nikita rubbed her shoulder and looked at the numbers of the elevator. “How is Lisa?”

“It has been a rough time,” Detective Rowles carefully spoke and Nikita was relieved to see that she was playing it safe right now. It meant that the police weren’t absolutely sure what had gone in and that they were concerned for Lisa’s safety. Nikita felt a moment where she worried that her cover could fall apart, but Tom had swore that he was going to tighten it up even more than she had it.

“I’ve seen some… unspeakable things… but I can’t imagine,” Nikita shook her head from side to side. She jumped as the door opened on the elevator. Detective Rowles led Nikita down the hallway and she opened up a door. “Lisa hasn’t talked much. The experts say that it is normal. The doctor gave her something to sleep last night…”

“She slept here?”

“Yes,” Detective Rowles admitted. Nikita swallowed hard and lifted her eyes. “She is in danger?”

Detective Rowles couldn’t hide the fact that she was surprised by the question. But Nikita watched as the Detective thought about what little bit of information she had learned about the woman sitting down in the room, waiting to see her niece. It did make sense that someone from Special Forces could conjecture why Lisa was still at the jail and not somewhere else, like a hospital. “We’ll discuss those details later.”

Nikita nodded her head up and down as she looked at the mirror in the room. It may seem like nothing but Nikita knew that she would not be unobserved with Lisa. She could only pray that Lisa was not too traumatized.
