Nikita paced around the table slowly as she kept up a military pace and stance. The door opened and Lisa walked in. Detective Rowles sighed. “I’ll leave the two of you alone.”

Nikita paced around to the table so that Lisa was facing her, but faced away from the two-way mirror. Nikita pulled the chair out and waited for Lisa to sit down.

Her heart was racing as it was clear that something had traumatized Lisa. She hadn’t had that bad of a time at Section from what Nikita could find. She was young, but it was clear that now, she felt much older. Nikita blinked at the tears as she leaned forward. “My god… you look like your Momma.”

Lisa shrugged her shoulders slightly and Nikita hesitated. Maybe she wouldn’t remember. “She always said I looked like my Aunt Renee when she was young.”

“Oh my,” Nikita leaned back as she pressed her hand against her chest, knowing that she was being watched. “I had the lighter hair… that’s it… but you have her eyes…”

Lisa glanced down at the table and Nikita placed her hands flat on the table. “I’m sorry… I wasn’t there… I didn’t know… I was away…”

“Being a hero,” Lisa chimed up and Nikita exhaled and felt some relief. She knew that she could let that be seen also. But Nikita knew that for right now, Lisa, although traumatized, remembered some of what she had taught her.

Nikita rubbed her hand against her face as she tilted her head to the side. “Lisa is a nice name… did your mother… name you after anything?”

This was the question that Nikita was nervous to ask. She wasn’t nervous about what Detective Rowles would think about it. Nikita was worried about what the answer was going to be.

If Lisa said “I was named after my mother’s best friend” that would indicate that she felt safe and didn’t want to be removed from the city.

If Lisa said “She said that Lisa was the name of your favorite doll” that meant that she was safe but didn’t want to stay where she was any longer.

There were many more and Nikita felt her stomach churning as she waited for Lisa to respond and Nikita tell something vitally important that would make this continue on in many different ways based upon her response.

“She just liked the name,” Lisa answered and Nikita had to stop her body from reacting. Nikita turned her head and looked around the room. “I’m sorry that you are here… and everything that happened…”

Meanwhile Chief Snowden walked into the observation room and looked at Detective Rowles. “How is it going in there?”

“She turned Lisa around to face away from the mirror… I can’t tell what Lisa is thinking…” Detective Rowles stated and the Chief moved forward. “She is a skilled operative, Detective.”

“So the story clears?”

“More than clears,” Chief Snowden looked at his detective. “She is decorated, multiple times over… saving children during missions… outside the parameters of the missions… was captured for a while and fought her way out with no weapons…”

“That doesn’t make her a good guardian.”

“It might not,” Chief Snowden agreed as he looked at the room and flipped the mirror off. “But she is a legal guardian… and probably a better person to protect that young girl in there than we can.”

Detective Rowles frowned. “Something is wrong.”

“Detective… I’ve started the paperwork. It needs to be done immediately…”

“What if this is just part of the set up?” Detective Rowles questioned.

“The paperwork has to process at least one day… so Lisa will be with us for the night still,” Chief Snowden spoke as he stood there and looked at the Detective. She snapped the mirror on again and continued to watch and soon saw Renee Walter relax a bit with the girl. Lisa was talking to Renee, which was more than what she had been able to do thus far.

Renee Walters looked up in the mirror and nodded to the door. She looked down at Lisa and said that she would be right back.

Stepped out into the hallway with the Chief, Renee closed the door. “Can I take her to the hotel tonight?”

“No way!” Detective Rowles snapped as she placed her hands on her hips.

“You need to be read in…” Chief Snowden explained.

Nikita knew that there was more that they hadn’t spoken about. Thus far they hadn’t even gotten anything electronically down which meant that they might have even been fearing an internal leak. “Is she in that much danger?”

“We are still checking you out,” Detective Rowles growled and Nikita leaned her head back. “What? You didn’t talk to Major Thomas Negley?”

“My detective has been taking care of Lisa… she is just being protective,” the Chief quickly recovered as he didn’t want to make this confrontational. “Are you staying by yourself? Because everything clears with the Chief… he told me about your last mission.”

Nikita jerked her head away and swallowed hard. She then turned back. “My boyfriend… ah… I mean fiancé… he was in Special Forces also…”

“We have to check him out,” Detective Rowles interrupted. Nikita nodded her head up and down. “Naturally… Nickolas LaRoque… He wasn’t in my unit… but we met each other on some combined missions… “

“And the real reason for leaving special forces,” Chief Snowden smiled as he knew something that Major Negley didn’t know about.

“Intimate relationships are not advisable… between operatives,” Nikita explained and Detective Rowles rolled her eyes and looked at the door. “It’s late… Lisa should get something to eat and then sleep.”

“I should stay here… if there is danger,” Nikita offered and the Chief shook his head. “I have to complete the vetting all of this information and we can’t yet leave Lisa with you alone… you should take some time with your fiancé… and bring him in the morning…”

“And you’ll tell me what has you so scared about Lisa’s safety?” Nikita questioned.

“Yes, Ms. Walters. We will,” Chief Snowden promised.
