“We could have taken you to the hotel,” Detective Rowles spoke as she stood outside with Nikita. Nikita wasn’t surprised that the Detective was with her. She didn’t buy the story as the Chief had. Nikita rubbed her hands together and shook her head. “Nick wanted to come get me… he wants me to try to eat… but I’m not hungry… I want to stay.”
“We have things under control,” Detective Rowles voice spoke but the tone indicated that Nikita should not speak any further about Lisa. Nikita rubbed her ear as the non-descript black car came to the driveway.
Michael jumped out of the car and ran around it to wrap his arms around her. “Oh, Renee… you should have let me come in with you…”
“Where are we staying? So the Detective can get in touch with us,” Nikita pulled away and glanced at Michael, pleased that he had remembered the name that she was using right now.
“The Motel 6… it’s not far from here,” Michael answered as he stepped forward. “I’m Nick LaRoque… Renee’s fiancé.”
Detective Rowles shook his hand and forced a smile. “Nice to meet you, Mr. LaRoque. I’m Detective Lynn Rowles.”
Michael pulled his hand away and wrapped his arms around Nikita. Nikita glanced to the side and tried not to react as she saw Davenport walking into the building.
Why was he here?
“I’m tired… and we have to come back early tomorrow… to discuss…” Nikita drifted off. Michael turned and opened up the door. Michael helped Nikita in and then looked at Detective Rowles. “We just got engaged… I haven’t had a chance to buy her a ring yet… that was used to buy the airline tickets…”
“What room are you staying in?” Detective Rowles questioned. Michael exhaled and rubbed his forehead for a second. “Room 507.”
“We’ll call the hotel if we have any change in plans,” Detective Rowles declared. Michael stepped forward and tilted his head. “You mean… if you can’t clear me too?”
“Take care of Ms. Walters, Mr. LaRoque,” Detective Rowles replied as she turned and walked away. Michael knew that she was going to go inside but she had other eyes on them. Michael got into the car and reached over and cupped Nikita’s face. “You ok?”
“I just want to go to the hotel,” Nikita spoke in the code that they had agreed upon. Michael knew what to do. He started the car and started down the street. He took several evasive moves with the car but knew that they weren’t being tailed. There hadn’t been time to put a tracker on his car. He pulled over and killed the car’s engine.
With deliberate motion, Michael opened up the glove compartment and Nikita nodded her head. He started to sweep her jacket and purse. Neither was surprised when there was a tracker in Nikita’s purse.
Michael started the car back up while Nikita placed the tracker in the bag and swallowed. “I don’t want anything to eat, Nick… can’t we call for room service.”
“The Hotel 6 doesn’t have room service… but there are a couple take outs that will deliver,” Michael replied as he continued down the road. “Do you want to talk about Lisa?”
“She is beautiful,” Nikita whispered as she thought about the girl. There was nothing to lie here about. Lisa looked so much like she had when Nikita had dropped her off in Minneapolis. This wasn’t the first time that Nikita had to get involved, but she had hoped that St. Louis would find Lisa a permanent home. “She says that she looks like me.”
“I like that idea,” Michael replied as he pulled into the hotel parking lot. He guided Nikita up to the fifth floor and opened up the door. There was a computer there and it was already running. Michael nodded his head and Nikita pulled the bug out of the bag and placed it on the bed as the recording started.
Checking the road, Michael took Nikita’s hand as they slid down the emergency staircase and out of the hotel. They crossed the street and into another room. Nikita closed the door and exhaled. “What was Davenport doing going into the Police Station?”
“You were concerned about Lisa staying the night,” Michael replied and Nikita rubbed her head. “But he doesn’t belong… he might be seen as someone to be after Lisa.”
“There was a writer who has been scheduled to observe the night shift for weeks now… Davenport took his place… but no one knows that,” Michael explained as he sat down on the bed and pulled at Nikita. “So?”
Nikita tensed and exhaled hard. “It was bad Michael.”
“How bad?”
Nikita swallowed hard. “My own control question… it was she named after anyone… and her answer was ‘She just liked the name’… and… that…”
“What does it mean?” Michael questioned as he lifted a hand to Nikita’s face.
“It means… that she is scared for her life… that she thinks it’s in danger,” Nikita rasped as she rubbed her throat. “And I had to leave her there tonight.”
“Davenport is there,” Michael pointed out as he leaned forward. “Kita… is there any chance…”
“I asked that question,” Nikita interrupted Michael as she knew that he was wondering if anyone had made Lisa and was trying to get to them. “The question was about school… and if someone has mentioned Section or my name… your name… the name Operations or Madeline… or Center… she was to reply that she didn’t like her science teacher because she didn’t challenge her. She told me that she loved all of her teachers.”
“And what does that answer mean?”
“That she loves school,” Nikita’s voice cracked. “Detective Rowles doesn’t buy the story… the Chief does.”
“They don’t know how bad this is, do they?”
“That this wasn’t just basic gambling debts? That this was related to organized crime here in St. Louis? They don’t even know of the organized crime family here,” Nikita shook her head from side to side. “I think that’s the threat.”
“We have to modify our exit,” Michael spoke and Nikita nodded her head. “Because of Detective Rowles not believing us… and some information that we need to have Tom feed the Chief…”
“So that the Detective doesn’t try to follow us.”
“Exactly,” Nikita nodded her head up and down. “Man… I hate doing this… I hate manipulating good people who are doing their job as best as they can…”
“It's for Lisa, Kita,” Michael spoke and Nikita nodded her head. Michael walked over and pulled the phone up, ordering some pizza. He checked in on the other computer and saw that Davenport had settled down in the police station and things were ok for now. “We should get some rest.”
“After we eat…” Nikita nodded her head up and down numbly. Nikita turned and took the computer. “Let me get in touch with Tom… see if he thinks that Chief Snowden believes him… and what other information he needs to feed the Chief.”
