Nat paced around the room and looked back to Rhoda. “Do you think that they are in risk and we are in risk?”
“I don’t know,” Rhoda shook her head from side to side. “But if that was the case, I would think that they would have told us to follow the plan… and that was to meet up at Walter’s. This has to be something else.”
Nat stopped and tilted his head. “Do you think that they found their daughter?”
“And this would be the first place they came?” Rhoda shook her head from side to side. “It will all make sense when they get here.”
“They were supposed to be here,” Nat pointed out and Rhoda sat down on the couch. “They have been out of town and Highway 309 is under construction… and it wasn’t when they left.”
Nat started to pace again and rub his hands together. “They pulled me off duty to have this meeting… I wonder if it is about the Angel… I mean, I don’t even know how those cards got to St. Louis and Boston practical at the same minute.”
“Angel? What are you talking about?” Rhoda inquired and Nat turned. “Oh… that’s right… not released to the public… the Angel took down an entire crime family in St. Louis… got them on some sort of murder and other charges too long to list… and uncovered a cover up from an environmental group in Boston when a tape arrived with… bad things on it.”
“Nikita wouldn’t just use the Angel unless it was important,” Rhoda whispered as she leaned back with a frown on her face. She almost wished that she didn’t know this right now. Now she started to worry about why they were coming here.
“Unless she got bored.”
“I think she has a lot of things going on that boredom isn’t a reason to be the Angel again,” Rhoda rolled her eyes as she stood up and took Nat’s hands. “Let’s stop doing this and just wait to find out.”
Nat didn’t reply but he stopped talking. But it didn’t stop him from thinking of things in his head as he sat down with his wife. Rhoda tried to change the topic a couple times, even wanted to talk about the process of becoming foster parents, but Nat didn’t want to talk about those things right now. Finally, more than a half hour late, Michael and Nikita were at the door.
Rhoda threw a warning glare at Nat to stop him from pouncing on them as soon as the door opened up. She opened the door and was shocked to see a third person with them, a girl with blonde hair and was probably just a freshman in high school. “Ah… Hi…”
“Hi Rhoda,” Nikita replied with a smile as she placed her hands on the girl’s shoulders. Nikita tilted her head and smiled at Nat. “I’m sorry we asked you to come home too, Nat.”
“I… I was due some comp time,” Nat replied and Rhoda turned to glance at Nat, wondering where the raving man that she had been dealing with since he came home went too. “Ah… come in…”
Nikita motioned for the girl to enter and the trio entered. Rhoda closed the door and walked into the living room. Nikita looked at the girl and smiled. “Nat… Rhoda… I’d like you to meet Lisa.”
“Hi Lisa,” Rhoda smiled at her and she felt Nat come along side her. “Hello, Lisa… Lisa? What’s your last name?”
Lisa looked up at Nikita and then to Michael. Michael looked directly at Nat. “We have the paperwork being drawn up to make her Lisa McCarty.”
Rhoda stepped back as Nat reached his arms around her, but stunned himself. “Ah… What?”
“We know that private adoption can be difficult… but that is what this would be,” Nikita replied and Lisa looked at Rhoda with a smile. “Nikita said that you wanted to have a daughter. I can help out around the house… I’m really smart and will help earn my keep.”
Rhoda was speechless and it was Nat who shook his head. “No, Lisa… you wouldn’t need to anything but to be a child. That’s what your job is to be.”
“Lisa needs a great home… with parents who can be ready for anything… steadiness and tenderness… things that I can’t give her… but I know that the two of you can give to her,” Nikita looked at Rhoda with tears in her eyes. Rhoda knew that somehow Nikita had rescued this girl and that she was special to Nikita. She also knew that Nikita thought so much about her and she suddenly was scared that she wasn’t ready for this. “I’ve never been… a mother…”
“You are ready for this,” Nikita spoke as she smiled at Rhoda. “And Lisa will have some time with Beatrice… and I’m sure everyone will settle in…”
After a few more minutes of awkward talking, Michael coughed and looked at Rhoda. “Do you have something to drink?”
“I was about to make some ice tea… maybe Lisa and Nikita can help me… and we can bring in some cookies too,” Rhoda suggested, picking up Michael’s hint. Nat watched as the three ladies left and he moved closer to Michael. “What’s going on?”
“She was inside… and Nikita got her out and placed… but it didn’t work out,” Michael shrugged his shoulders slightly. Nat tilted his head to the side. “Boston or St. Louis?”
Michael nodded his head barely and exhaled. “St. Louis.”
“The murder?”
“The foster parents that Lisa was placed with,” Michael answered as he folded his hands in front of his waist. Nat swallowed hard and Michael stared at him. “You can’t turn this away, Nat. You knew it as soon as you saw her.”
“She looks like Nikita.”
“Not related biologically… but they have connection due to circumstance. But Nikita can’t live with that reminder each and every day,” Michael outlined and Nat smirked. “I thought you were worried about Adam.”
Michael rolled his eyes and was about to comment when the doorbell rang. Nat walked to the door and found Mick there. “Ah… Mick.”
“Michael told me to come over,” Mick stated as he looked in and waved at Michael. “You said that you were giving me some work to start my new career…. I’m confused why I’m here.”
Nikita walked out with a tray of cookies in her hand and Lisa carried the glasses while Rhoda carried the ice tea. “Mick… it’s so good to see you.”
“Hi Rhoda…” Mick stated and then he laughed. “Hey… it’s a small birdie… like a Chicklet… Hey… Hi, I’m Mick!”
“My name is Lisa,” Lisa corrected and Mick shook his head back and forth. “Chicklet…”
“Mick,” Nikita spoke and he laughed. “Come on, Popsicle… it’s my thing.”
“What is going on?” Rhoda inquired and Mick pointed to Michael. “He called me to come over here for my first job.”
“Job?” Rhoda asked and Mick smiled brightly. “I’m now an interior decorator.”
“We thought that you may have a room ready but that Lisa might want to get something more personal…” Nikita spoke up and Mick looked into the living room and looked at Michael. “Maybe they need something more family in the living room.”
“Mick,” Michael warned and he shrugged his shoulders. “I’m trying to establish myself, Michael.”
