Nikita was relieved that spring was holding on as she jogged down the street, her legs feeling happily sore as she moved in a perfect rhythm, heading for a park that wasn’t far from the house and would end up giving her a good seven mile circuit. Then she would be back home to have lunch with Michael.

She needed the run especially with the conversation with Adam the previous day. It was easy at the moment to brush off the comments and redirected Adam, but it didn’t stop Nikita from thinking more about her daughter and the fact that she had relaxed on the search for the sake of everyone.

But her daughter was in a possible impossible situation. She couldn’t be adopted. She was a foster child who could be moved from family to family. If she was anything like Lisa, it was possible that Nikita’s and Michael’s daughter was wicked smart and too much of a handful for a foster family. She wasn’t about to get the life that Nikita had thought that she was giving her daughter when she sent her away from Section One.

As she turned into the park, Nikita felt the approaching person and she eased into a faster pace as she tried to glance behind but not give the impression that she knew that she was being followed. But the person increased their speed and Nikita had to figure out her next move. She jumped onto the hilly path and went a few strides and abruptly stopped and turned.

“Tom,” Nikita dully declared as she walked towards him and got back onto the jogging path and started back up at her former pace. Tom eased in next to her and turned his head. “We have to talk.”

“You mean that you aren’t here for a jog?”

“Although I’m sure that you are going to take me thru my paces, Nikita. I didn’t come here to challenge you or to scare you. I honestly have to talk to you,” Tom explained and Nikita snorted. “That’s why there is a phone.”

Tom stayed quiet for a while and Nikita finally looked at him. “I’m only going around the park once and then going home. I want to have some peace during this jog so I want you to spill it now.”

“Can we stop and talk at the bench?” Tom inquired and Nikita pulled up. She looked up at the treetops and shook her head from side to side. She pulled her hair up to tighten the ponytail while Tom panted and moved to the bench. Nikita smirked. “You don’t jog much.”

“No reason too… I find it pretty boring,” Tom sat down and watched Nikita. “It’s not bad.”

“This is about Detective Rowles.”

Tom shook his head as he looked away. “How do you do that?”

“I’ve been watching her too,” Nikita stated as she smirked. “And she isn’t close to us at all.”

“But aren’t you worried that she is going to destroy her career?” Tom asked and Nikita exhaled while she looked down the path. “I can’t worry about it, Tom. I have other things to worry about.”

“I know that you do… but I’m just asking you to think about this for a bit. It’s a good sign of a good detective if she is still trying to figure out what happened,” Tom outlined as he implored Nikita. She groaned and sat down beside him.

But Nikita didn’t speak. She just stared out over the path, shaking her head. “I tagged her, Tom. I know that she is looking. But she hasn’t left St. Louis.”

“She has filled out paperwork to take a leave of absence over this,” Tom revealed. Nikita winced as she shook her head. “I can’t stop her from doing that.”

“Nikita…”

“You do something, Tom,” Nikita snapped as she got to her feet. “Why does it have to be me? You can do something about this and I am asking that you take care of this.”

“I was hoping that you could come up with something…”

“I only went in for that because of Lisa… and I have no plans of continuing to get involved.”

“But yet the Angel was in Portland Oregon last night,” Tom pointed out as he stood up and faced Nikita. “You aren’t out of it yet.”

“That’s to make sure that no one is onto us. You have to understand that, “ Nikita’s shoulders dropped as she shook her head. “Tom… I have enough guilt issues on my hands right now. You can’t guilt me into this.”

Tom tilted his head and he shook it from side to side. Nikita exhaled as she shook her head again. “You can take care of this.”

Nikita started to jog away when Tom grabbed her arm. “Come on, Nikita…”

“You just want me to confirm what you think you have to do is right. I think it’s too soon. I think you should let the Chief try to talk to her again. It’s too early to worry about what Detective Rowles is or isn’t doing. Give her some time.”
