She ended up jogging longer than she thought she would because of the stop with Tom. She was strong with Tom, but she did worry about Detective Rowles because she was a good detective. Nikita would hate if St. Louis lost that detective because she got too engrossed in what happened to Lisa.

She drank water as she knew that pushing to almost ten miles was probably a mistake, but her mind had taken that long to clear out all the thoughts, and even now they were all coming back again. Her legs would be sore later tonight, but Nikita was able to think about things clearly as she was about to run upstairs for a shower when the phone rang. “Hello?”

“Hi, Nikita,” Whitney spoke and Nikita glanced at the clock. “I did have the right time today, right? We were going to meet at the zoo parking lot at about two.”

“That’s right,” Whitney chuckled slightly. “I know that we haven’t formalized anything, but I have the opportunity to go on an expedition that would have me out of the country for six weeks. I’m hoping we can discuss that, Buffy.”

Nikita blinked her eyes while she chuckled at Whitney’s use of her nickname. “I haven’t even had a chance to really talk to Michael.”

“There aren’t many things on the books… and you’d have Buddha around. Although he likes the protection business… I can’t see why he can’t take some time off from watching you to take some photos. It gives Buddha an interesting life,” Whitney pointed out.

“I have to talk to Davenport about that too.”

“Buffy, you were to do that a while ago,” Whitney protested and Nikita pulled a chair out and sat down. “I’ve been busy.”

“Yes, I know that you went out of town. I had to do promotional shots of ice cream. Not my finest day and I thought you really wanted it,” Whitney pointed out. Nikita rubbed her forehead. “I talked to Davenport about that before I left… and it’s more reason for me… maybe not doing this.”

“Really?” Whitney simply asked and Nikita frowned. She didn’t really want anyone else to be a boss. “Whitney… I’m just going to talk to Michael and Davenport about this being mine to run for the six weeks that you are gone.”

“That is something that I can agree to as being a sound and perfectly rational arrangement. I’m sure that by the end of it you’ll see that you are a natural to run this,” Whitney was bubbling with excitement. “And to let you know, I did turn down a girl’s birthday party this week. I have been listening to you.”

“Thanks,” Nikita swallowed hard as she wasn’t sure if she had taken the call that she would have been able to say no. She would have felt guilty but she was thankful for Whitney to be there to handle this. “I’ll still see you at the zoo at two. I have to go get ready.”

“I saw you out for your jog… so I’m glad to hear that you are showering,” Whitney laughed as she hung up. Nikita rolled her eyes and was about to stand up when the phone rang again. “Whitney, did you forget something?”

“It’s Jason,” the voice was dry and Nikita winced. “Sorry, Jason… I was just talking to Whitney.”

“So I can tell,” Jason dryly commented without much humor. “Are you ok to talk about something serious?”

“Please, not you too about Detective Rowles,” Nikita complained as she pushed away from the table while heading to the refrigerator. She needed to eat something small.

“Ah, no,” Jason dragged out a bit too long. “Actually… I have to start by confirming that I’m not closer to finding your daughter… I wish I was.”

“I have a meeting at two, Jason. Can you get a move on with this conversation?” Nikita questioned as she knew that Jason would never just call about information on her daughter. He would make sure that Michael was there.

“I found your parents,” Jason spoke clearly and Nikita, who had just opened up the door to the refrigerator, stepped away and allowed the door to close. “What?”

“Well, I found your grandmother… her name is Winifred Whitwirth. Her husband, Eugene Whitwirth, passed away two years ago,” Jason stated and Nikita exhaled while she closed her eyes. “That was fast.”

“I had an idea that your mother-“

“Roberta.”

“I had an idea that Roberta,” Jason corrected himself and then paused. “She dropped part of the name whenever she left them. I don’t think it was all the way legally done… but it happened and no one stopped it from happening.”

“What happened to my grandfather?” Nikita asked as she rubbed her free hand along her neck.

“Prostate cancer. But he lived 92 years, Nikita,” Jason revealed and Nikita swallowed. “I’m glad that you found her.”

“She is actually in the area… just about an hour and a half away. Staying in… a specialized retirement community.”

“Specialized retirement community? Is that a fancy way of saying nursing home? Don’t beat around the bush, Jason. I’m lucky that she is still alive.”

“Ninety-four and still alive,” Jason spoke and swallowed hard. “It’s an assisted living residence for individuals with Alzheimer's.”

Nikita winced and nervously chuckled. “Well… as least I won’t have to worry about her remembering Roberta.”

“Alzheimer’s patients still have times when they are very lucid, Nikita. I haven’t gotten into her records at all yet.”

“Don’t,” Nikita shook her head as she opened up the refrigerator and pulled out some bread. “I’m glad that you found her. But I think this is where this search needs to end.”

“It gives me hope, Nikita,” Jason admitted but he was sad with Nikita’s decision right now. He was going to have to talk to her again about this. He was going to find out more about Mrs. Winifred Whitwirth without getting into her files at the assistive living center. “But I needed to be successful with this… I know that you don’t want to hear it…”

“You needed a break searching for my daughter,” Nikita spoke before Jason could say it. “I understand. I think we all did.”

“Are you sure that you don’t want to learn more about your grandmother? You might even be able to visit her…”

“Leave her be to her life,” Nikita whispered as she rolled her shoulders back. “I have to eat and get ready for a meeting, Jason. Is that all?”

He was saddened that Nikita wasn’t happier but he knew that it was a risk with Nikita. “Yeah… that’s all.”

“Thank you, Jason,” Nikita clutched the phone as she finished the conversation. She placed it down on the table and stared at it for a while. She then started to eat and knew that there would be another time to think more about what she had found out.
