Lynn Rowles walked into the dark club and found her head slightly nodding with the base line that was not quite shaking the entire establishment, but almost. The place was almost too trendy but she pushed her way thru the crowd and made it to the bar where she ordered a Bud Light. She was pleased to perch herself up on the stool and wait.

There was a risk following up on this lead but she was risking her entire career either way. Everything had ended up in too neat of a nice package. She should have been more aware of what was going on with the woman who said that she was Special Forces. That was her first mistake.

Now she knew that she was playing with fire because she didn’t know exactly who she was meeting here. She looked along the bar and didn’t see anyone that looked to be a danger to her and that did nothing to make her feel better.

A man came over and danced slightly while he ordered right beside her. He looked at her and smiled. “Why aren’t you dancing?”

“I don’t,” Lynn replied and the man laughed. “Then what are you doing at a dance club?”

“Waiting for someone,” Lynn replied and the man quickly moved away with the two screwdriver drinks in his hand. Lynn turned and sipped at the beer and looked over her shoulder to make sure that the man wasn’t looking back at her, in case he was the one that she was waiting for.

There was a noise behind her and when Lynn turned back to the bar there a napkin in front of her with writing on it. She looked around and did not see anyone. She pulled it towards her and read the writing. “Need to talk somewhere quiet. Ned’s Diner two blocks away. Cops eating there now.”

Lynn knew the place. She used to have the pancake special there while having the late shift when she was on the midnight beat herself. She pulled out her cell phone and called first. “Ned’s Diner.”

“Hi… I’m Detective Rowles and I was wondering if there are two officers in there right now?”

“Yes, ma’am. There are two officers here right now. Do you need to speak with them?” the woman replied and Lynn stood up from the bar. “Have you ever seen them before? We have had reports of imposters…”

“I know Officer Gil Shook and Officer Rick Uhland very well. They dine here almost every night that they are on duty,” The answer came and Lynn started to walk. She knew these two officers. Officer Gil Shook could have had been a detective now, but wanted to stay on the street beat. Officer Rick also turned away from promotion and he was running a very successful volunteer program for children who wanted to get into law enforcement. While that wasn’t the only thing they were known for. Together, they were nicknamed as Officers Shock and Awe because they pulled off some of the most amazing arrests the force had seen of late.

They knew Detective Lynn Rowles also. Both waved to her as she entered the diner. She looked around and saw a middle-aged man with a polo shirt on and jeans with two cups of coffee. She knew that this was who she was to meet and she sat down at the table. “Why the cloak and dagger games?”

“Detective Rowles… Thomas Negley,” Tom extended his hand. Lynn didn’t shake it. She blinked her eyes and nodded her head. “I didn’t hear you say Major Thomas Negley. I take it that you weren’t really in Special Forces.”

“Oh paper,” Tom replied as he didn’t even miss a beat. He pulled a folder out and placed it on the table. “You need to stop the search.”

“I don’t think so,” Lynn shook her head from side to side. “I don’t even think that whoever has Lisa is related to her.”

“Biological proof confirmed that. Your own offices did that work,” Tom pushed at the folder again. “She is safe Lynn.”

Lynn glanced at the folder and then back to Tom. “I think this is tied back to the Angel. I used to think that it was feasible to be an isolated group in one city… there was some sort of boundaries… but the angel is showing up all over the place… makes me think that the angel may have been constructed by the government.”

“Absolutely not,” Tom swung his head from side to side. “I’m not here about where Lisa is. I’m not about who has Lisa – I know that she is safe and has a family that she deserves. I’m not here about the Angel. I’m here about you not throwing away your promising career.”

“I haven’t been about my career. I’ve been about holding up the law and providing justice. That’s what is right about my job,” Lynn pulled at the folder but didn’t open it. “What’s this?”

“Your career,” Tom tilted his head to the side and watched Lynn. “Open it.”

Lynn pulled up the folder and saw her file. She saw the commendations and then she saw the report about Lisa’s case. There was a note that she should be considered for the head detective position for special cases. “A bribe?”

“I had nothing to do with that,” Tom shook his head from side to side. “But those words won’t matter if you continue to chase this, Lynn. It doesn’t help anyone. It doesn’t help the next victim that you could help out if you are out there searching futilely for Lisa.”

Lynn dropped the folder. “Ok… I’m just supposed to blindlessly believe you… without getting anything out of it?”

“I didn’t say that,” Tom replied as he put a card on top of the folder. “Let’s just say… I have resources that can help you with cases when there aren’t labs that can move fast enough to get proof. I have resources to ways to end cold cases quickly. I offer you access to those resources.”

“The Angel,” Lynn stated as she pulled the card up. Tom laughed and shook his head. “I told you… the Angel isn’t part of the government… for all we know it’s individuals working by themselves… who are just copycats… or more than likely, it’s a construct of the media to explain things that are too hard to really understand.”

“Then there wouldn’t be cards left behind,” Lynn pushed the card that Tom gave her into her jeans and looked around. “That’s all?”

“Use that contact information when needed… but know that we may… need some things in return.”

“I’m not dirty,” Lynn lifted her chin up and Tom shook his head. “Do you think that the regular every day Joe on the street needs to know all the things that they are truly protected about? Do you think that every day life could continue if the public knew how many times attacks are diverted and stopped without them knowing? Don’t you think that there are some people that have to help in that process?”

“All of this because I haven’t stopped looking for Lisa?”

“All this because you had the nerve to tag a Special Forces person… and because you cared about Lisa while you had her in the office,” Tom explained as he waved to the waitress and they were given two pieces of cherry pie. “Your favorite, right?”

Lynn picked up a fork and frowned. “How?”

“Your talk with Chief Snowden on the phone last night… of course we don’t have your phone tapped,” Tom shrugged his shoulders before taking a huge bite of pie. “That’s why I choice this place.”

“You’re watching me,” Lynn stammered and Tom nodded his head. “Just for a little bit.”

Lynn took a bite and then found it hard to swallow. She finally did and she exhaled. “I don’t have a choice.”

“You do,” Tom looked at her. “I’m just really trying to stack the deck so you take the right path… the path that will help more people in the long run. It will help your city. You can do so much more right here than going after shadows.”

“You are one of the shadows,” Lynn sighed as she felt more comfortable than moments ago.

“There are far less shadows in the world today. That’s a really good thing. But some things have to be protected,” Tom admitted. Lynn took another bite of the pie and looked at Tom. “Will you track me forever?”

“No,” Tom shook his head but Lynn rolled her eyes. Both knew that there was some bit of lie to his statement. But he knew what he meant when he said it. “Go back to work for a month. I’ll tell you where one of the trackers are.”

“One?”

“Each month… for the next six… I’ll tell you where to find a tracker. There are only six,” Tom answered. Lynn rubbed a hand thru her hair. “I could find them.”

“Oh, trust me. You wouldn’t find these. In fact, no one really knows that they even exist,” Tom flatly replied to Lynn’s challenge. Lynn put the fork down and nodded her head. “Lisa is safe?”

“She is more than safe. She is going to get the help that she needs for what she had seen… and she is going to have a forever family now.”

“Then I’m going to agree to this… for her sake,” Lynn leaned back and stared at Tom. He smiled and placed money on the table before quickly leaving. She looked out the door and saw that he had simply vanished as soon as he got outside. It made her worry about she had a card to get in touch with someone when needed.

Maybe that was worth a lot.
