“I should meet her, Nikita,” Adam declared as he sat at the table. Nikita turned form the stove and shook her head. “Not yet.”

“It’s been weeks,” Adam protested and Nikita took a deep breath. It was this way almost every single day. “Adam, shouldn’t you be worried about baseball?”

“I don’t have to worry about baseball. It’s fun,” Adam shook his head back and forth as if it was nothing. “But Lisa… she needs a friend right now.”

“She needs to be with her new family,” Nikita corrected again as she didn’t turn look at Adam. She wondered if she could record her responses and play them back to Adam tomorrow without him noticing. The same statements were said to her each day by Adam. It was getting very old and Nikita had tried to get Michael to discuss this with Adam but Adam wisely would get his father onto another subject.

Ironically, it usually was about baseball.

“Kids don’t need to be near adults all the time…”

“When you have been thru the things that Lisa has been… you need adults for some time, Adam,” Nikita turned and stared at Adam. She rolled her shoulders back and sighed. “I know that you are concerned about another kid that might have some experiences like you have had Adam. I know that you want to be a support for her… but I need you to try to talk about something else. It has been days of this and it cannot continue.”

Adam smiled and laughed. “You should have just asked.”

Nikita leaned forward and arched an eyebrow. Was it truly that easy? “What?”

“All you had to do was ask me, Nikita. What do you want to talk about?” Adam asked and Nikita felt like this was a trap. She knew better than to ask about school because somehow this would lead back to Lisa. She frowned and shook her head. She wasn’t going to allow Adam to trap her. “No… Why don’t you figure out what we should talk about?”

Adam stood up as he nodded his head. “Ok… I like this. Any limits?”

“No more Lisa,” Nikita warned and Adam nodded his head up and down. “So… I have the perfect topic… actually, it’s more of a question to you.”

“Ok,” Nikita smiled at Adam, feeling like this was finally getting them somewhere else where she wouldn’t feel the need to go for a run after dinner.

“When are you going to tell my father that you want to marry him?” Adam asked as he hopped up onto the counter and sat there, staring at Nikita.

She was thrown for a loop and she turned away from Adam. She hadn’t told anyone about that but Beatrice and that was when she was sure about it, but that seemed to be a thought that grew and withered in strength from day to day. She knew that Adam never talked to Beatrice so he didn’t hear that from Beatrice. She simply didn’t know how Adam could know.

“Adam… we aren’t talking about this either.”

“You said we could talk about anything else but Lisa. I like this topic because I want you marry him,” Adam smiled broadly and Nikita turned to face Adam again. “I know that you want this, Adam. It doesn’t mean that it is going to happen.”

“It would if you would just tell him that you want to…”

“I don’t know if I want too,” Nikita snapped as she shook her head from side to side. She walked to the refrigerator and then pushed her hand against the door. “It’s complicated, Adam.”

“It’s only complicated because you make it that way,” Adam spoke and Nikita could tell that he was shrugging his shoulders. She turned and pointed the slotted spoon that she had carried with her at him. “I won’t be lectured by you on this, Adam. This isn’t your place.”

“Love is simple. Humans make it harder. Just do what your heart wants to do,” Adam again spoke and this time Nikita watched him shrug his shoulders. She blinked back tears and she was about to throw the spoon to the floor when the phone rang. Adam moved and Nikita glared at him. “Don’t you dare answer that phone young man.”

Adam knew that Nikita meant business as she walked to the phone, dunking the spoon into the soapy water in the sink as she went. “Hello?”

“Hi, Nikita,” Jason spoke and Nikita looked up and shook her head at the ceiling. “Jason, I’ve been trying to talk to you for days now… I know that you are busy with Daisy…”

“Nikita, I have something important…”

“I know that it is important for you to spend time with Daisy, but we just wanted to invite you over for dinner. Although tonight wouldn’t be the night,” Nikita turned to look at Adam. “Adam is about to get extra homework for being very cheeky.”

“Nikita… I’ve been busy…”

“Spending time with Daisy might be busy for you, but that doesn’t mean that you should ignore multiple phone calls from me… especially since Daisy was invited too…”

“I got a solid location on Dwayne McMullen,” Jason blurted out because Nikita wasn’t stopping to listen to him. It was absolutely not the way that he wanted to tell Nikita, but she was harping too much.

Nikita almost dropped the phone because she knew who that was. It was one of the four. Nikita forgot that Adam was in the kitchen as she walked down the hallway and into the living room. “You better not be joking.”

“Never about this,” Jason sighed as he cleared his throat. “But I don’t know if this is truly a lead on your daughter. I’ve been trying to get more, but I haven’t been able too.”

“Where is he?” Nikita inquired and Jason groaned. “I know that you want to go storm to where he is Nikita…”

“Let me be the decision maker on that…”

“I should talk to you and Michael,” Jason spoke and Nikita frowned. She shook her head. “Tell me, Jason.”

Jason exhaled as he knew that Nikita needed to know. “St. Louis.”

Nikita groaned as she leaned her head forward. Why did it have to be St. Louis?
