Laura shifted and pulled her head up off of the pillow, starting to take stock with what was around her before she even opened her eyes. She was in a bed that wasn’t hers and she felt oddly safe at first.

Until she felt someone stroke her cheek.

“Shh…” Tom whispered as he looked at her jolt of shock, but he did nothing to keep her from sitting up in bed. Laura knew that she was fully dressed but she was still a bit out of sorts until she remembered the tears that had just started to fall and how Tom hugged her.

A hug had made her fall apart even more.

“We all have these moments,” Tom sat up and Laura wrapped her arms across her chest. She shook her head. “I don’t know what you are talking about.”

“I’m just here for you. I could be that for you last night,” Tom explained and Laura turned to find a clock. That was when she realized that she had slept until well past ten in the morning. She exhaled and leaned against the bed frame as she lost the comfortable and safe feeling to find the nervously and pensive feelings arriving back again.

“I can’t imagine that your father was much for hugs…” Tom commented as he leaned back against the headboard and watched Laura. She started to nod her head up and down but stopped herself. “He was great…”

“I am not arguing that.”

Laura carefully glanced at Tom and then sighed. “But you are right. He wasn’t about signs of affection.”

They fell silent and Laura turned to look at Tom. She pushed her hands into her hair and then dropped them. “The world isn’t what I thought it was.”

“You knew about your father,” Tom gently commented as he rubbed his hands along the blanket and started to fold the edge inward as he waited for Laura to think about his statement and for her to reply. “I may have known it in my head… but I guess I denied it too.”

“So you think your world has changed?”

“It changed when I met Lisa, didn’t it?” Laura challenged as her throat closed up slightly. She cleared her throat and shook her head. “It wouldn’t be bothering me if I hadn’t been… wondering about my career path… seeing too many…”

“It won’t be like being a detective, Laura,” Tom shook his head as he continued to keep his eyes averted at this time. “I don’t even know if that is what you ultimately want to do… but I could use some help with what I’m working on right now.”

He had her attention and Tom finally allowed his eyes to look at hers. “I’m trying to find a daughter that has been lost because her mother did the only thing that she could do at the time… I’m trying to find a daughter who could have been given to a great family if it hadn’t been for a bad twist of fate…”

“One of the kids my father had assigned to him?”

“I heard that he didn’t keep any of the young ones. I’m trying to find a girl who may be starting kindergarten or first grade,” Tom spoke as he took Laura’s hand. “Take a leave of absence… and help me.”

“Is this for Nikita?”

“And Michael and most importantly… their daughter,” Tom admitted as he nodded his head up and down.

Laura rubbed her chin against her shoulder and her eyes narrowed slightly. “I’m a pawn… to make it easier for you to approach my father’s previous colleagues.”

“That’s a benefit I get,” Tom agreed as he didn’t move his head. “But you aren’t a pawn. If you weren’t related… I would be offering the same thing.”

“But it makes it easier.”

“I won’t deny that either,” Tom shook his head this time. He sighed and then tilted his head. “But then, we could find it to be harder. We don’t know the true terms of the trade that your father made with his peers.”

Laura stood up and walked around. Tom stayed where he was and then stood up. He walked to Laura to turn her to face him. Then he wrapped his hands around her arms and held her. Her head went to his shoulder and he stroked her back gently. “I won’t charge for hugs, Laura.”
