The streets were so different from St. Louis. She had noticed that there was a large yard in the house that she was staying with Rhoda and Nat when she first arrived. The fact that there wasn’t a fence between the yards also was something that Lisa wasn’t used to after living in the urban areas of St. Louis. But she also found that it made it easier to slip away.
Yet, she was so nervous because this was all unfamiliar to her. The streets had names that seemed like normal names, but yet the blocks were so much longer. She turned to the right and saw the large trees starting to fill the area. She took a deep breath and exhaled as she visualized the words that directed her way to do once she got to the entrance of the park.
Lisa had found no fault with Rhoda and Nat. They were watchful and they were overprotective right now, but it hadn’t seemed to be too much, until she had met Adam. Lisa rubbed her arm as she jogged across the street although there were no cars around. She turned down to the right and saw the bleachers of the stadium that she had been told would be there.
She wasn’t sure if she would have snuck out if she hadn’t met Adam. She wouldn’t have trusted the message but now she was almost relieved to be away from the adults for a while. She knew that later today they wanted her to talk to the therapist again and Lisa wanted to be given a break. She didn’t want to think about what had happened in that house. She wanted to just forget it. Instead, she talked about it and it brought nightmares to her sleep which only meant more therapy.
It was an awful cycle.
“Over here,” the voice rang out as Lisa almost walked too far. She saw Adam and smiled as he slipped out from behind a tree. He reached his hand out and helped her stepped into the unpaved park. “There is a great spot over here that I want you to see… no one wants to come this way…”
Lisa watched as Adam easily scrambled up the rocks. She followed him and then stopped as he held his arm out and she was glad that she stopped. There was a drop off where he was and Adam waited to help her sit down first before sitting down himself. “I’m glad that you came.”
“I guess… I might get punished if I get caught,” Lisa stammered slightly as she shrugged her shoulders. “I guess… I don’t know what they are going to do.”
“They’ll cut you a break,” Adam declared as he picked up a rock and tossed it out into the air. “They want you to be happy and punishment will be too scary for them to give you.”
Lisa shrugged her shoulders slightly. “That wasn’t always the case with other houses…”
“You aren’t in a house this time,” Adam shook his head from side to side. “You have a home.”
Lisa rubbed her elbows and exhaled. “Sometimes I feel trapped.”
Adam cleared his throat. “That’s why you have me… now we just have to get you a computer.”
“I’m lucky I got on their computer… and found you…”
“That wasn’t luck,” Adam shook his head and Lisa narrowed her gray eyes. Adam chuckled. “Yeah… I may have learned some things from my father and Jason…”
“Then how can I get a computer.”
“Ask,” Adam spoke and Lisa shook her head from side to side. “I did…. They are afraid of me right now getting out there… or reading something about what had happened… they act like I’ll go research what happened to my foster parents…”
“Oh,” Adam whispered slightly. “They think you are a lot like Nikita. You have to just let them get pass that phase. Rhoda really was protective of Nikita when she was in a really bad place.”
“I can’t imagine that.”
“Rhoda helping?”
“No,” Lisa swung her head from side to side. “Nikita not being perfect.”
Adam almost choked. He picked up a rock and threw it. “You knew one side of her… what she wanted you to see. With us… she was who she truly was… and it was kind of scary… but it’s still so much better with her in our lives than before…”
“You know about Section?” Lisa inquired and Adam nodded his head up and down. “My father told me all about it. He doesn’t believe in lies these days.”
“I was young,” Lisa commented and Adam handed her a rock. “Throw it.”
“What?”
“Throw away those thoughts right now… thoughts about how maybe it would have been better to be in there…”
“How did you…”
“I could just tell,” Adam stopped Lisa from finishing her question with a shrug of his shoulders. He looked out and then back to Lisa. “Throw it.”
Lisa pulled her arm and chucked the rock into the air. She laughed as it fell thru the sky and into the trees. “That felt… ok.”
“It isn’t magic,” Adam shrugged his shoulders as he pulled out a wrapped box and handed it to Lisa. “Here.”
“What’s this?”
“The beginning of a computer,” Adam smiled broadly. “You do have access to a video game console, right?”
“Yes… but it’s older… and they have the internet signal tied up tightly. I was surprised that I got on for as long as I did…”
“Oh,” Adam chuckled. “That must have been Jason’s doing. I can walk you thru getting around that.”
Lisa shoved the package into her pocket of her jeans and looked around. “And how are you going to do that when I can’t even really get on the one computer in the house?”
“I’ll write the directions down and give them to you in paper tomorrow,” Adam announced as he stood up. “We’ll meet here.”
“I can’t sneak out again…”
“Nat is going to have a case tomorrow,” Adam announced as he extended his hand and helped Lisa to stand up. “And Rhoda is going to work too… because Nikita is due to be there with a new donation… so I could come to the house if you don’t come here.”
“You can’t go there!”
“You are going to be alone for hours. I could get everything setup…” Adam drifted off and shook his head. “No… you need out of the house.”
“I’m going to get into trouble.”
“You won’t,” Adam shook his head as he started to lead the way. He turned as they got to the street and took Lisa’s hands again. “You have great people who care for you… and Nikita got you out… that means you are going to be fine. We are all in a good place because of Nikita.”
Lisa swallowed hard. “You didn’t have to see what I saw that night, Adam…”
“And I don’t want you to have to think about it all the time,” Adam countered as he squeezed her hands. “A couple weeks and you’ll be able to smuggle enough parts in for a computer… then we can start having some fun.”
“Don’t think that I can’t do some things,” Lisa pointed out and Adam nodded his head. “I anticipate this is going to be fun.”
Adam slipped away with skills that his father had shown him. He followed Lisa in the shadows as he wanted to be sure that she was heading home. He had watched her walk most of the way to the park and saw that she was unfamiliar with the terrain. Adam didn’t agree with the fact that Rhoda and Nat were keeping her inside so much, but he would just have to work with Lisa to help free her up some more. She needed to learn the lay of the land and have time with non-adults.
Adam slapped his hands as he turned towards home to only run right into a solid body of muscle. He had closed his eyes and now opened them slowly as he instinctively knew that it wasn’t his father. “Hey… Davenport… what are you doing out here?”
“What were you doing meeting Lisa?” Davenport questioned and Adam swung his head from side to side. “I don’t know what you are talking about.”
“Adam…”
“Hey,” Adam shook his head from side to side. “Aren’t you the guy who helped my dad and Nikita slip away from missions?”
“They were slipping away from clandestine… well… for… they weren’t just talking…” Davenport stammered as Adam gloated happily. “They were having sex, Davenport. I’ve learned about the birds and the bees.”
“If that is what is going on between you and Lisa…”
“I have not partaken in adult pleasures,” Adam rolled his eyes. “I just knew that it would fluster you… and point out one of the reasons why you aren’t going to bust me for this.”
“One of the reasons?”
“The second one… you agree with me,” Adam stepped away. “Lisa needs friends.”
“That doesn’t mean you.”
“How can she make friends if she can’t get out of the house?”
“That’s for Rhoda and Nat to decide.”
“Did you stay in the house when you were a teenager?” Adam questioned as he turned and walked away. He knew that at least for now Davenport wasn’t going to say anything, but he was going to have to be more careful in the future.
At least his father had taught him some more tricks.
