Spring had absolutely sprung in the Washington DC area as the areas around the monuments were bustling with people who were enjoying some of the very first very warm days outside. The cherry blossoms were threatening to break open but not quite yet. There were plenty of school groups roaming around and there was the sound of children all around.

It seemed like the crowds were growing and there were even food trucks pulled up ahead selling all kinds of food. They were all packed and there were even some teenagers who had broken out the tank tops a bit too soon. There was a Frisbee on the sidewalk that got yanked up by some teenagers as they continued to jog across the lawn.

“We needed this break,” Tom explained as he looked at how uneasy Laura was walking in this tourist area of Washington DC. It was off the itinerary that Laura had made to drive from Buffalo to where she thought she would find a lead on Todd Hunter. He had been giving Laura a lot of freedom to know off of what she knew about Todd Hunter. That was why they were now heading to a small town called Sapphire in the mountains of North Carolina. But it had been too many days in a row doing this. Tom needed the break for his sanity and Laura needed it too, although she would protest.

“We could have been there.”

“On the weekend? That isn’t going to help us find him. Everyone will be out of their routine,” Tom countered as he shook his head. “We’ll spend the weekend here. There are some fine restaurants over in DuPont Circle… we can sleep in.”

“We need to find Todd,” Laura declared as she looked around, scanning the crowd. It was like she was looking for him walking around with them. Tom sighed and took her hand, pulling her into a line for food at a food truck. She stared at him and he looked at the menu. “I’ve followed them on Twitter… they are to have the best crab rolls.”

Laura crossed her arms and waited for Tom to order three of the crab rolls. She took extra napkins and walked with him to a bench where they sat down. “I always thought that Washington DC was all about the politics… and maybe these monuments can make someone think of politics… but on days like this… it isn’t about the Lincoln Memorial... or the Washington Monument… it’s about the life around here… look at all of these people.”

Taking a bite of her crab roll and slowly chewing, Tom wasn’t sure that Laura was going to respond.

“I’ve never been here.”

Tom stopped eating and tilted his head. “Your father never brought you here?”

“No,” Laura shook her head from side to side. She saw the look on Tom’s face and shrugged her shoulders. “And he didn’t want me to get into law enforcement. Wanted me to be a doctor… a nurse… a teacher… anything but in law enforcement.”

“And you went against him?”

“I guess… it was sort of in my blood,” Laura commented with a shrug of her shoulders. “We have to find Todd.”

“I think that isn’t that important now,” Tom whispered as he shook his head from side to side. He started to eat again and left Laura to think about what he had said. She was staring at him and he pointed to her roll. “It’s getting cold.”

Laura wrapped it slightly and leaned back. “I’m full.”

“You aren’t,” Tom shook his head from side to side. “You are upset with what I had said so now you are pouting by not eating something that I know that you like.”

Laura glared at Tom sighed. “I’ll explain my comment… but after you finish. Just look around and enjoy the nice weather and the people while you eat.”

Laura waited to make sure that Tom was going to do as he promised. He even got up and got in line for more food. She unwrapped her roll and started to eat again. She was finished as Tom finished his second roll and handed over a napkin. “I’m sorry, Laura.”

“You confuse me.”

“I just think that it’s time to regroup on our plans with finding Todd. I think it’s time you met Jason… and Michael and Nikita.”

This shocked Laura. She leaned forward. “Really?”

“After we spend some time here,” Tom announced as he stood up and he had her hand. Laura yanked her hand away. “No. We have to find Todd.”

“And our lives are more than finding Todd. Maybe that is why your father didn’t bring you here yet.”

This time, Tom just started to walk. Laura was left there, thinking about what was being said. It didn’t make sense and she was confused yet again by Tom. She looked at him and she ran to get next to him again. She pulled his shoulder to make him face her. “Explain.”

Tom wrapped his arm around Laura despite the fact that she hated it. He led her into the World War Two Memorial and faced her towards the Washington Monument. “He knew that if he took you here when you were younger… you would have done something more… or even been pulled into the path he was. I was brought here and explained what my father did… and my father’s father had done… and while I don’t have that life anymore... I have some memories of my involvement in it.”

Laura turned and looked to Tom until he turned her to look at the Monument again. “I need this time with you too… to explore this city with your eyes… to let you learn about the history… but to learn about life.”

“But…”

“Laura,” Tom whispered as he leaned his head down so that she could feel his breath against her ear. “Sometimes it isn’t about what you think you need… sometimes it’s about hearing what someone else is saying.”
