“Adam!” Lisa exclaimed as she started to jog towards him. She smiled brightly as she pulled up beside him. “You are amazing.”
Adam looked at Lisa and tilted his head. “What did I do?”
“The memory in the gum container… saved me yesterday,” Lisa declared as she pulled out the box and handed it back to Adam. “Nat was home and asked me where I had been… I was able to pull this box out and say I had to go buy gum.”
Adam chuckled and laughed. “I told you that you wouldn’t get caught.”
“I almost have a computer…”
“Well, I have more gum for you,” Adam shrugged his shoulders as he pulled out another gum container and handed it over to Lisa. “I think a few more meets and we should be able to get you on.”
Lisa traded the box and sigh. “That doesn’t mean that we’ll stop meeting, does it?”
Adam was happy to know that Lisa still wanted to get out of her house like she was doing right now. “I have no issues. I thought you would have the issues.”
“I need time away, Adam… I really like Rhoda and Nat… but I like talking with you,” Lisa explained.
“Getting enough reception on that bug?” Davenport asked as he tapped Nat’s shoulder. Nat pulled away and blinked his eyes. “Davenport…”
“I’ve seen you for a while now, Detective,” Davenport pointed out but Nat continued to frown. He pulled out the ear bud and sighed. “How? I’ve been careful.”
“Remember… operative… I have some mad skills,” Davenport commented as he pulled Nat away from the tree and looked back at Adam. “They are heading this way.”
Nat looked over his shoulder and then back to Davenport. “How did you know that?”
“I’ve been here since the first time,” Davenport announced with a shrug of his shoulders. “But I have to admit… I didn’t think to bug them. Where is the bug on her?”
“Her hair barrette “ Nat admitted with shame on his face. He had given it to Lisa as a gift and she wore it almost every day. It wasn’t that Nat bought it to hide a bug on it. It was after he had confirmed that Lisa was sneaking out and meeting with Adam that he planted the bug on the studded barrette.
“Why haven’t you busted her?” Davenport after Adam and Lisa had walked passed them without notice. Davenport was not looking forward to the day that he was going to have to inform Michael that Adam wasn’t as good at identifying things as he thought he was. Lisa had his attention and Adam should have picked up on Davenport a lot more often. But there was no way that Adam thought that after that first time that Davenport wouldn’t be watching for other meetings.
Nat was conflicted with the answer to the question. He was to be her father, but yet he allowed this to continue. He sighed and looked at Davenport. “She seems happier.”
“That’s it?”
Nat sighed as he shook his head and shrugged his shoulders at the same time. “She does things with us now… and maybe it is what Adam has been telling Lisa to do in order to get a computer… but still, it’s like a family.”
“But you are the father,” Davenport shrugged his shoulders slightly.
“Maybe I don’t agree with Rhoda on keeping her away from kids… keeping Lisa away from Adam,” Nat admitted with a groan. “But don’t you dare tell Rhoda.”
“She is going to find out.”
“Have you told Michael or Nikita?”
“Hell no,” Davenport shook as he swung his head from side to side. “But I have talked to Adam too. I told him to tell his father… he hasn’t listened.”
Nat shook his head. “We both think that this is good…”
“Oh no, Nat. I didn’t say that I agreed with this. I said that I know about it. I just have tried to tell Adam to do the right thing and tell his father and Nikita before I do,” Davenport corrected as he shook his head from side to side.
“But we both are doing the wrong thing.”
“According to you, Detective,” Davenport grumbled as he shook his head from side to side.
Nat glanced at his phone, knowing that he had to get back to work soon. “It’s like we are playing a game.”
“Of chicken,” Davenport added as he rolled his shoulders back. “Which one of us is going to tell Rhoda, Michael or Nikita first.”
“So we are playing chicken with them… not between ourselves.”
“Someone loses in chicken,” Davenport warned as he looked towards Adam and Lisa. “Thank god they seem to just be friends.”
