Adam chuckled at the television show. It was ridiculous but it was funny too. He pushed his hand into the giant bag of Doritos and couldn’t help but think that there must have been a problem at the factory because it was almost empty. He was reaching for the chocolate milk that was the last of the gallon that was just bought yesterday, when the front door opened up. He wasn’t expecting anyone home, but didn’t think much of it.
Until Nikita called out his name.
“Adam? Where are you?” Nikita spoke loudly and forcefully from the doorway. Adam had just taken a gulp of the chocolate milk and he quickly paused his chewing as he knew that tone – it wasn’t good. He hurried and swallowed as Nikita walked into the living room. “You should have answered me, Adam.”
“I was finishing what I was eating,” Adam indicated as he lifted the bag. He was waiting for Nikita to notice that the bag was empty, which wasn’t going to be good because she liked Doritos and he had polished off the last bag that had been in the house. But Nikita didn’t notice.
“Where is Lisa?” Nikita asked as she placed a hand on her hip and stared at him.
Adam felt his pulse race but he maintained calm on the outside. His father had always told him that it mattered what people saw. “Lisa? Why would I know where she is? I don’t really know her.”
“Stop lying,” Nikita declared as Adam saw another woman walk in behind Nikita, but it wasn’t Rhoda. Adam turned and stood up. “I’m not lying.”
Adam continued to look at Nikita and she huffed. “Don’t you dare blank stare me like your father used to do, Adam. It didn’t work for your father with me and it won’t work with you.”
“Really, Nikita… I don’t know why you need me to tell you where Lisa is. I’ve been here all day,” Adam countered and he watched as the other woman stepped up and touched Nikita’s elbow. “Maybe he doesn’t know.”
Nikita pulled her arm away and shook her head. She stepped forward and looked directly into Adam’s eyes. Neither of them heard the door opening up again as Nikita studied Adam carefully. Adam could tell that she could see right through his lies and then he started to wonder why it was so important for Nikita to know where Lisa is. “What’s wrong with Lisa?”
“So you admit that you have seen her?” Nikita shook her head slightly. “Lisa is missing… and you know where she is.”
“No!” Adam shouted as he shook his head. “And how did you know that I know her? I’ve been careful…” Adam started to fight back when the person who had entered the house walked into the living room. Adam narrowed his eyes. “You told her, Davenport!”
Nikita whirled around on her heels and saw Davenport standing there. “Ah… told who what?”
“You told Nikita about how I’ve been meeting up with Lisa. You weren’t going to tell anyone!” Adam shouted at the man as he crossed his arms across his chest. Davenport swung his head from side to side while he pointed a finger towards Adam. “I told you to tell your father and Nikita, Adam… but I didn’t tell them.”
“You knew that Adam was doing something we didn’t approve?” Nikita questioned as she tilted her head at Davenport.
“Ah… Nikita… Lisa is missing. This isn’t helping us,” Laura spoke and Davenport frowned. “Who are you?”
“Yeah… who are you?” Adam mustered out as he saw an opportunity to turn the attention off of him for the moment.
“My name is Laura… I was with your mother when Rhoda called…”
“Then Rhoda should talk to Nat,“ Davenport rolled his eyes. “Nat has been following those two for a while too… it took him a bit to catch on to what was going on and thank god I had been on the ball… but he bugged Lisa.”
“BUGGED LISA!” Adam shouted as he dropped his arms. “That is so wrong! She just wanted a friend her own age and to get out of the house. Who would want to stay with their parents every hour of every day?”
“Nat knew too?” Nikita shook her head back and forth as she stepped away from both men. “I can’t believe the lies that are going on here… both of you know so much better.”
Adam looked at Laura and then his mouth dropped open. “Why are you worried about Lisa, Laura? Aren’t you supposed to be looking for my sister?”
“Ah… I was with your…” Laura was flustered as she didn’t know how to respond. She didn’t have to worry. Nikita picked up. “Lisa is missing too, Adam. Probably because you manipulated her into leaving the house to meet you… she doesn’t know anyone here.”
“That’s the problem!” Adam shook his head back and forth.
Laura didn’t know what to do as everyone started to shout at each other. Just moments before they had at least been listening to each other, but now everything had devolved. All were pointing their fingers at each other and no one cared about stopping long enough to figure out where Lisa was.
“You are the adult, Davenport. More importantly, I trust you with Adam and my family… and I’ve trusted you with my secrets… so how could you have kept this from us,” Nikita shouted and then she turned towards Adam as Davenport started to fire back. “You are boy. You don’t get to make decisions about what is best for other people.”
Michael could hear the noise before he opened up the door. The words were loud and he shut the door loudly, but that did not change the noise. He didn’t know what was going on and he walked briskly into the living room to not be noticed.
He observed the room for a couple moments before lifting his fingers to his lips to whistle loudly. Instantly everyone stopped and looked towards Michael. “I cannot believe what I just walked into…”
Nikita, Adam and Davenport all started to talk but Michael lifted a hand with an eyebrow that stopped them all. “I need to find out what is going on here…”
Michael paused as he saw how upset Nikita was by her rapid breathing and Davenport was rubbing his right hand fist, which was a clear sign that he was upset also. Adam was shifting from side to side and he was bouncing although Adam thought he was doing his imitation of Michael’s stance. Michael saw Laura and watched her swallow carefully. She hadn’t been doing the shouting and Michael had to figure out what was going on. “One person at a time is going to talk at a time… no interruptions… until I hear what is going on and what has everyone so upset.”
They waited and Michael looked at Nikita. “Michael, it’s bad…”
“Kita,” Michael interrupted and she stopped. “Be quiet.”
Michael watched the pain wash across Nikita’s face as she didn’t step backwards, but she did seem to shrink. She wrapped her arms across her stomach and Michael knew that he was going to have to fix that later. Michael turned to look at Laura. “Please tell me what is going on here.”
Laura didn’t know if she liked being on the spot, but she could get to the point right now. “I was talking with Nikita when Rhoda called to say that Lisa was missing…. Nikita said that she thought Adam would know… that Adam probably was seeing Lisa somehow… that she just knew that Adam was…”
Adam started to protest but Michael simply glared at his son. He pressed his lips together and then Adam’s calmness broke more as his foot began to bounce up and down.
Laura rubbed at her neck and cleared her throat. “Adam said that he didn’t know Lisa… but he did know Lisa… and he assumed that Nikita found out because Davenport told her…”
Michael looked at Davenport but the man didn’t seem upset that he hadn’t told Michael what was going on. He simply shrugged his shoulders in an indication that he had hoped that Adam would come clean with his father on his own terms.
“Davenport told us that Nat knows that Lisa knows Adam because he has been following them and that he bugged them…” Laura stopped and exhaled. “Then it was a bit hard to follow.”
“He shouldn’t have bugged his own daughter!” Adam hissed and Michael turned his head to look at his son again. Adam pressed his lips together and then swallowed. “Sorry.”
“I’m going to call Rhoda and Nat. I don’t want to hear a peep from this room,” Michael directed at his pulled out his phone. He watched Nikita for a moment longer as he was almost sure that she would be the one that might speak once he stepped out into the hallway. But her eyes showed him that she wasn’t about to speak. She was shrinking and splitting her time glaring at Davenport. Nikita and Davenport must have gotten very personal when this all started to explode.
Nikita turned her head away from both Adam and Davenport as Michael left the room. He didn’t want her to talk and tell him what had happened. He had picked Laura over her and that burned. She shook her head as she tried to tell herself not to be upset, but it wasn’t working. Michael didn’t pick her. He didn’t trust her to tell him what was going on.
“Nat told Rhoda about Lisa meeting Adam,” Michael commented as he walked back into the room. “And Nat wasn’t following Lisa... and she left her barette behind.”
“Must have left the necklace too,” Davenport murmured and Adam groaned in protest of hearing more about the bugs.
“Adam, do you think you know where Lisa would go?” Michael inquired and Nikita turned to look at Michael again. Michael wasn’t even looking at her.
“I showed her some of the paths at the park… she likes some more than others… I think I know where she would go,” Adam answered back with a very gentle voice as he knew that he was in trouble but that it wasn’t the most important thing right now. “She never left the house before without wanting to meet me. She said that she wanted some time alone today… I didn’t think that she’d leave the house.”
Michael didn’t respond and he couldn’t do anything to help Adam deal with the guilt that he felt right now. That was for another time. “Adam… you’ll come with me to the park.”
“Michael…” Nikita protested as did Davenport. Michael glared at the two of them before looking towards Laura. “You can come with us too… these other two need to deal with things.”
“There is nothing to deal with,” Nikita hissed as she glared at Michael. “Lisa is missing and you want every person you can helping in that park. If Adam has been showing Lisa the park, that’s a lot of ground to cover.”
“Not the regular path, Dad. We went on the hiking trails… away from people,” Adam pointed out and Michael shook his head. “Adam… Laura… we’ll leave now.”
Neither one of those people moved. Nikita turned and brushed out of the room and upstairs. Davenport dropped his head back and groaned. “I didn’t want to get involved, Michael…”
“I don’t care,” Michael snapped as he shook his head and pointed his head towards the front door. Adam started to walk and he took Laura’s hand as he went. Michael stood there and looked at Davenport. “Make nice with her.”
“I’m not the one that she is upset with,” Davenport pointed out and Michael winced slightly. “We have a girl to find.”
“And you don’t think that Nikita isn’t going out the upstairs window?”
“I expect you to stop her once I leave the house and bring her along. And maybe make amends for being like a novice recruit,” Michael shook his head slightly as he started to move. But not before he heard Davenport mutter, “Yes, Mr. Operations.”
