“Dad, these are the only two trails that I walked with Lisa,” Adam protested as he came to the sign that indicated the Oakwood Trail and the Ridge Line Trail. Adam leaned against the sign and rolled his shoulders back. “We’ve walked both trails!”

Michael turned and shrugged his shoulders. “Then you must be wrong about her coming here. Maybe she went to the mall.”

“Michael,” Nikita snapped as she came up the trail, having caught up with Michael, Adam and Laura not long after they started down the first trail. But during all of this time, Michael had stubbornly ignored Nikita and Davenport.

This time was no different.

It was Adam who had to stop his dad. “She wouldn’t go to the mall, Dad. She barely likes hiking with Rhoda… and Rhoda went to the mall.”

Michael stopped and turned to look at the trail sign. “Maybe we should try Honeybrook…”

“That trail is packed, Dad. There is a reason why I didn’t walk that one with her,” Adam protested with a swing of his head. “She started out on one of these two trails.”

“Maybe she went to sit underneath the stadium bleachers, Adam,” Davenport pointed out as he rubbed his hand through his thin hair. “You met up there a lot.”

Nikita held her words as she thought about what underneath the stadium bleachers meant to most high school students. But she didn’t have to worry, Michael went there. “Exactly what were you doing underneath those bleachers because it better not be what usually goes on there!”

“I know that you are upset with me, Dad. But be serious. You know me.”

“I thought I knew you,” Michael coldly shook his head from side to side. He looked around and Laura cleared her throat. “Which trail did you go to first, Adam?”

“Oakwood,” Adam replied and Laura turned to start down the trail again. “She could have hidden behind a tree…”

Michael started to follow Laura and Nikita swallowed hard. She wanted to ask Adam the same question but Michael had been ignoring her. She allowed everyone to move ahead and glared at Davenport as he walked passed her. They had been silent to each other and that was fine with Nikita.

Nikita was upset and found that this was a waste of time. Lisa was not out here for fun. Something had caused her to not want Adam to be out with her today. Something had her upset that she wanted to be alone. It was scary to be in that type of place and Nikita knew those feelings well.

When Nikita was stuck, she knew where to go to be left alone. Her mind needed to process and for the most part that was what she was able to do at the convent, although now she knew that it allowed her to continue to be stuck there. But some of that was just the way Nikita had grown up. She had never been able to control a lot of her own destiny and she had fallen into that pattern once Section had been disbanded.

“Wait!” Nikita shouted as she was going to be heard. She jogged ahead to stop Michael and Adam. “She isn’t going to just be on this trail.”

“Keep going Adam,” Michael pushed at his son’s shoulder. But Nikita stood up and pushed Michael back. “Listen to me, Michael.”

“You aren’t helping, Nikita,” Michael hissed and Nikita frowned as she heard him use her proper name. She shook those feelings away.

This couldn’t be about her right now – it was about finding Lisa.

“You need to stop and think about Lisa. You are walking this trail and the other one thinking like Adam. It isn’t Adam that we are trying to find,” Nikita shouted as she swung her head from side to side. “Let me talk to Adam.”

Michael stood there and folded his arms across his chest, not saying a word.

“It sounds like she might have something, Michael,” Davenport chimed up but Michael didn’t look back to his friend either. Nikita tilted her head and Michael didn’t move.

She had it and she stepped to the side and pulled Adam. “Ok… you have walked this trail with Lisa a lot… did you point to her some of the side trails?”

“Yes.”

Nikita exhaled and nodded her head. “Ok… did Lisa like the places that were dark in the trail or places that were lighter?”

“She didn’t like the really heavy forested areas as much,” Adam commented and Nikita rubbed her hands as she sighed. “Ok… and were any of these other trails places that you said that you would take her soon?”

“Oh yeah,” Adam nodded his head up and down. “Sky meadow when there was a breeze so we can fly a kite.”

Nikita turned around and pointed up the hill that wasn’t far. “That’s the way up there, right?”

“Yeah… it’s right at the top of the hill,” Adam indicated and Nikita started to move.

“Where are you going?” Michael demanded and Nikita stopped. “I thought you were being a dictator here, Michael. You know what is best, right?”

“She isn’t going to be up there,” Michael intoned and Nikita tried to count to calm down, but she was sick of this. “You aren’t the one who has had PSTD, Michael. I know exactly how it feels to have something bother you so much that you feel like you have been traumatized again… and that is why we are going to find Lisa up there.”

“You are wrong,” Michael fired back and Laura shook her head. She didn’t know that Nikita had PSTD, but she wasn’t going to go against Nikita. She had a connection with Lisa the moment that she had walked into that room back in St. Louis and Nikita knew Lisa probably the best, even more than Adam thought he knew her. “I’m coming with you.”

“You can continue on, Michael. You obviously know so much more than I do,” Nikita fired out as she nodded to Laura and started up the very small trail to where Sky Meadow was. She knew that this was where Lisa would be.
