Laura watched as Nikita stopped and turned towards her. Laura stepped forward and saw exactly what Nikita had suggested they would find. Lisa was sitting in the taller grass of the meadow, staring out to the line of trees. Nikita didn’t say a word but moved to stand beside Lisa. “Do you mind if we sit down with you?”
Lisa’s entire body jumped and Nikita moved to sit down beside her without waiting. She took Lisa’s hand and waited for Lisa’s body to calm itself down. “What are you doing here?”
“Rhoda was missing you,” Nikita replied as she started to rub Lisa’s hand, feeling how cold it was even though it was a warm day. “Adam thought you would have come to this park.”
“He never brought me up here,” Lisa stated with a little shake of her head. “I needed… somewhere to breathe.”
“Did it help, Lisa?” Laura inquired and Lisa looked at Laura and didn’t even question why she was there. Lisa started to nod her head and then stopped. Nikita shuttered her eyes and squeezed Lisa’s hand. “It felt like it helped… but it didn’t.”
“How do you know that?”
“You are responding to a lot of trauma…”
“No…” Lisa swung her head from side to side. Nikita glanced at Laura and there was pain written in Nikita’s eyes. It was a signal that right now, Nikita didn’t have the words. In ways, Laura blamed Michael for this and this was when Lisa needed Nikita the most. “Lisa… did you dream about what happened…”
Lisa’s eyes flashed as Laura had started the question and Laura stopped before finishing the whole question. Lisa could try to lie right now, but both women saw what Lisa had allowed them to see. Lisa tried to pull her hand away, but Nikita took her other hand and wrapped it around that one hand.
Nikita needed to provide Lisa an anchor right now. Nikita understood acutely what Lisa was feeling and she had to help right now, or it could get worse. Nikita didn’t have anyone to anchor her for too long and she had almost been lost to the abyss. Nikita was not about to allow that to happen to someone else. Especially not a girl.
Especially a girl who was special to Adam.
“I had a dream…” Lisa’s voice cracked as she shook her head and wrenched it away. “I don’t want to remember it… but I keep on seeing…”
“It could be a memory,” Laura pointed out and Lisa shrugged her shoulders but didn’t turn back to the adults. “It… it was twisted… and stuff that couldn’t have happened…”
Nikita dropped her head. Memories of Section.
The guilt hit Nikita again and she dropped her grasp on Lisa’s hand and stood up abruptly. She walked a few steps and found the strength. She got down on her knees in front of Lisa and waited for Lisa to look at her. “I’m so sorry… about Section… and the childhood that you didn’t get to do… and the things that even though we tried your hardest for you not to see… that you probably saw and heard… and imagined… and it is making everything harder… and it shouldn’t be that way… and I will never be able to do enough to fix that.”
Lisa swung her head quickly from side to side. “You… you don’t need to be sorry… you… didn’t cause the dreams… you gave me sunlight, Nikita… and maybe I’m not like other kids… but you gave me so much more than I thought I would get… you gave me sunlight…”
Moving to sit back on her heels, Nikita tilted her head to the side and was able to pause and take a moment to compose herself. “Lisa… I have been troubled with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder… I hope to god what you have remembered in your dream… is not the beginning of that… and I’ll continue to apologize for things you don’t think I need too… because I need to do that.”
Laura got closer to Lisa and took her hand just like Nikita had. Nikita was onto something there and Laura needed to step up at the moment. “It is important to hear that we are listening to you… and that we want to offer suggestions and help. Running away…”
“I didn’t run away,” Lisa interrupted as she shook her head from side to side. “I was going to go home… I just wanted to sit here until my mind cleared… I didn’t think I was gone that long.”
“It’s very late, Lisa,” Laura answered as she turned her wrist over so Lisa could see the time. Lisa gasped and she even paled slightly. “I didn’t think… I was here that long…”
Nikita rubbed her hands across her face. “It can happen, Lisa.”
“I’m happy here, Nikita,” Lisa declared as she looked at Nikita. “I like Rhoda and Nat. They are nice…”
Nikita looked to the top of the hill and saw Michael standing there and shook her head as she focused back on Lisa. “And you like being near Adam.”
“I needed someone my own age…. Beatrice is nice… but I needed to have downtime from stuff,” Lisa explained as she looked at Laura. “I had to have a break to think about other things… and that’s probably why I had a dream… but it was a dream… because it was twisted…”
Laura had an idea what Lisa was talking about but she patted Lisa’s hand instead. She wasn’t going to voice what she thought could have happened. “It was just… really scary because Adam was in it… and he has been so supportive… and I didn’t want him to be there for me today… like he was in the dream…”
It was quiet again and it was Laura’s turn to look up at the hill to see Michael standing there. That probably explained why Nikita had pulled back slightly and Laura wrapped an arm around Lisa. “We should get you home… because Rhoda and Nat are really scared about what was going on… and you really need to talk to them about your dream.”
“It’s embarrassing!” Lisa wailed and Laura shook her head from side to side. “They won’t think any less of you, Lisa…. And then you have to talk to Beatrice about this too… trust us adults on this. We sometimes do know what is right.”
Nikita rubbed her hands along her knees. “I’m sorry about telling Adam to stay away… that was a mistake.”
“Don’t punish him… he was sneaking me out and getting me a way to get onto a computer for me… I asked him to do it all,” Lisa pleaded as she started to stand up. She rubbed her legs as she really started to feel the effects of sitting there for so long.
The three woman started up the hill and Michael crossed his arms before calling out, “How are things going, Laura?”
Nikita picked up her pace and quickly passed Michael. Lisa looked at Laura as they approached Michael and she followed suit as she jogged off to catch up with Nikita.
“Why didn’t you ask Nikita?” Laura inquired and Michael didn’t answer. “How is Lisa?”
“Sounds like a really bad dream last night had things that she didn’t want to remember,” Laura admitted as she watched Michael turn and start back down the hill, finding that Nikita and Lisa had placed a lot of distance between them. “I don’t think it was Post Traumatic Stress Disorder… I didn’t know that Nikita had that.”
Michael again did not comment. “Lisa is young. She is resilient… she’ll get through this.”
“She practically begged us not to punish Adam,” Laura stated and Michael snorted. “Thank goodness I don’t take the advice of children when it comes to punishment.”
They grew silent until they met up with the group. There was tension everywhere and what should have been jubilation because Lisa was found, just seemed to be growing tenser with every step back to the trail head. Laura exhaled as she rubbed her neck. This wasn’t all over by simply finding Lisa.
