Nikita watched as Adam walked into the elementary school and she turned her head to see Mick walking towards her. “I thought I told you that I would meet you at the coffee shop?”
“I heard someone talking about seeing you at an elementary school…” Mick gently said and Nikita sighed. “Not about my daughter. Making sure that Adam got to his punishment ok.”
“Isn’t this where Lisa is serving out her punishment?” Mick asked as Nikita started to walk beside him. The coffee shop was just a block away and Nikita had spent the past two afternoons here waiting for Adam to be done.
She had come up with the thought that Adam should tutor children at the elementary school and that it was ok that Lisa was doing the same. Nikita knew that she was wrong about keeping Adam away from Lisa. They did seem good for each other. Michael wasn’t pleased with that but he went along with Nikita’s suggestion, adding on a couple things that were uniquely Michael.
“They aren’t working with the same children,” Nikita cleared her throat as she rubbed her sore neck. The spare bed wasn’t as comfortable as the master bed. “And there are stiff punishments outlined if they do not let us know that they are out together going forward.”
“Young love?” Mick as he opened the door and Nikita shook her head from side to side. “No. Friends I believe.”
“And they have to tutor… for how long?” Mick questioned and Nikita chuckled. “Rest of the school year… that’s about eight weeks.”
“Still…” Mick whispered and Nikita shook her head. “I don’t know if Rhoda and Nat did anything further for Lisa… but Adam has a couple projects from Michael… including a thirty-page research paper on runaways and it must include two personal interviews of people who ran away, not like Lisa did… but runaways who went to completely different states.”
“Ouch,” Mick rasped as he selected a table. “Do you want coffee or do you want tea?”
“Tea… Chamomile,” Nikita replied and Mick turned away before Nikita could see his wince. He could tell that the time since Lisa ran away had worn down on Nikita, but it wasn’t because of Lisa or Adam. It was Michael. He had asked Nikita out for coffee on the suggestion of Davenport and he wanted to tell Davenport he should have called him a couple days ago.
Moments later, the tea was in Nikita’s hands as she was focused on him. “I haven’t seen you around. Have you been busy?”
Mick nodded his head. “Not looking for your daughter… but doing some more decorating. I guess some people saw Lisa’s room and it got me some other customers…”
Nikita knew this but it was good to see the smile on Mick’s face. She craved to see people smiling right now and she hated to admit it that she liked seeing Adam coming out of the tutoring with Lisa because he was smiling then. She wasn’t seeing much of smiles right now.
“I heard about how bad things got when Lisa was missing…”
“I don’t want to talk about it, Mick,” Nikita tensed up as she steadied her hands and then took a sip of her tea. “Lisa is found now. We all know the secret. Lisa even got a real computer out of it… so all is ok.”
“No it isn’t,” Mick shook his head from side to side as he sipped at his cappuccino. “Things are not good between you and Michael.”
“I’m not going to talk about that,” Nikita shook her head from side to side.
“And I heard that Lisa stirred up some of your emotions,” Mick continued and Nikita dropped her head. She swallowed some more tea and then looked at Mick. “I’m fine.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
Mick studied Nikita and shook his head again. “You look tired, Nikita. You look like you are sleeping, Popsicle. That makes me worried that you are having flashes again… and I know that you have struggled with PTSD.”
“I’m not having post traumatic flashes, Mick,” Nikita interrupted as she pushed her hair back. “Things have been tense. But I’m fine.”
Mick waited a few moments as he allowed Nikita to nervously drink her drink. “Michael hasn’t talked to me. I’ve tried too.”
“He hasn’t been talking to most people,” Nikita admitted as she rubbed her shoulder again and then groaned. “You should leave him alone.”
“But he is hurting you!”
“He is not hurting me,” Nikita snapped and Mick tilted his head to the side. “I didn’t mean physically.”
There was no response from Nikita. She took another sip of her tea and pushed it away, half done. “Stay out of this, Mick.”
“I can’t, Popsicle.”
Nikita turned and shifted in her chair. “Mick… don’t get involved. Everyone is butting in right now… this too will pass.”
“I don’t trust this situation,” Mick reached over and touched her hand. “We all need Michael watching you.”
“Watching me?” Nikita pulled her hand away as if he had burned her. “Why?”
“I think you are struggling with the PTSD again.”
“I’m not having flashes, Mick. I know that I have Beatrice to talk to if I have them, even if Michael is in a bad mood,” Nikita hissed and Mick shook his head. “This could be you punishing yourself, Popsicle.”
Nikita jerked and shook her head. “You have heard from Adam.”
“He is scared,” Mick nodded his head up and down.
“I swear… I haven’t had any flashes.”
Mick didn’t believe her and Nikita sunk in her chair. “Why can’t you believe me on this? I’m not telling you lies, Mick.”
“You are exhausted… tired… not looking for your daughter… content on bringing Adam to tutor each day… you are hiding from things,” Mick outlined and Nikita yanked at her purse. “You know nothing.”
“You are running,” Mick pointed out as Nikita got up from her seat. Nikita whirled and leaned down close to Mick. “Be glad that I’m leaving. Because if I wasn’t, I would be liable to do something bad to you. You have no right to talk to me this way… and you don’t know what you are talking about. Butt out, Mick.”
Mick watched as Nikita slammed out of the coffee shop. He pulled out his cell phone and dialed Jason number. “That was a bad idea, Jason.”
