Beatrice rubbed her forehead as she headed back to the house that she had been called to early in the morning. She did not want to be coming back and she knew that this was just a sign of too much going on in a short period of time. Nikita did a good job hiding that she was struggling after finding Lisa, but it was too much for her in reality. Now whatever had happened between herself and Michael had passed, she was feeling the impact of holding it together so well, and she did not want to accept that either.
When Beatrice had first arrived at the house at a little bit before four in the morning, Nikita had been in the bedroom with Michael, struggling to catch her breath. The first job had been to reassure Nikita that she was safe and sound. That took almost an hour and it wasn’t until closer to six before Nikita could start telling about what she had remembered during her sleep.
The biggest issue that Beatrice could see was that Nikita wasn’t sure if they were straight out memories or if she had twisted some facts together. To Beatrice, and knowing Nikita’s history, they sounded like they were memories. There was a way for Beatrice to verify some of it, but she wasn’t about to ask Lisa if she remembered the time that Nikita had. For Lisa, it wouldn’t have been traumatic to remember that time. For Nikita, it was a sign of one of the many bruises her heart bore for too long by itself.
There was another issue and it was one that Beatrice hadn’t touched upon because she felt that it was too tenuous of a situation right now between Nikita and Michael. Yes, they were together again as they hadn’t been for too long, but there had to be doubts about trust in Nikita’s mind, even if she wasn’t going to speak of it.
It was not going to be something that Beatrice mentioned either because right now Nikita needed Michael’s support and to bring this topic up could cause some distance between the two.
“Hi,” Michael spoke as he opened up the door and stepped back. He looked like he had gotten some rest and Beatrice swallowed. “She hasn’t slept, has she?”
“That’s correct,” Michael sighed as he rubbed at his face that showed that he hadn’t shaved recently and it was growing quickly. “I tried to get her to… after you left… after breakfast… after lunch… all day.”
“But you slept,” Beatrice commented as she stepped into the house. Michael dropped his head. “A couple hours after lunch. I forgot… her training…”
“She made you think she was sleeping…”
“And then I fell asleep,” Michael admitted as he shook his head. “I should have taken her back upstairs… at least then I would have known… I was on the couch…”
Beatrice turned and watched as Michael shut the door. He didn’t move which indicated that Nikita was in the living room. “I was frustrating her by trying to talk her into going to bed… I didn’t want to cause any new stress between us.”
“I understand,” Beatrice spoke as she was relieved that Michael realized that he had to call for help again. He wasn’t a man who wanted to call for help too often but this was necessary.
Beatrice knew that there was no reason to beat around the bush as she entered into the living room. She had given Nikita simple directions earlier, to sleep. That hadn’t been done and she was back. “You haven’t slept, Nikita.”
Nikita lifted her head as she pushed her palm against her knee and squeezed her fingers into her muscle. She was nervous and Beatrice sighed. “You can’t be afraid of going to sleep.”
Nikita shrugged her shoulders. “I’m not tired.”
“You aren’t allowing yourself to be tired by stressing out,” Beatrice declared as she sat on the coffee table and looked directly at Nikita. “Just like why you didn’t have flashes when you were staying in the guest room… you didn’t allow yourself to have flashes… and once you knew that you were safe with Michael again, they came.”
Michael stood in the doorway and watched. Beatrice glanced up at him and knew that she didn’t need him right beside Nikita like he was needed when Beatrice had first arrived in the morning. Nikita almost didn’t even seem to recognize her for a long time. Right now, Nikita just needed to be open to listen to Beatrice.
“Come on, Nikita… you have to sleep.”
Nikita shook her head. “I don’t have to sleep yet… I’ve been trained to last a lot longer without sleep…”
“You were trained,” Beatrice stressed. “That type of training requires lots of maintenance to keep up those lengths of time… I don’t think you’ve been doing that so I think you are really tried… but you are afraid of going to sleep… of having flashes.”
“I don’t want to have any more.”
“I can’t promise that you won’t,” Beatrice replied as she leaned back slightly. “Maybe we need to start this with another approach…”
Beatrice looked at Michael. “Can you draw Nikita a hot bath? Maybe she just needed to relax some… and maybe you can give her a massage…”
“You can’t lull me to go to sleep,” Nikita warned and Beatrice nodded her head. “I know that.”
“Then what is this?” Nikita asked as Michael didn’t say a word but he left to do as Beatrice had suggested.
“Maybe if you allow yourself to be taken care of… to relax in the hot tub… to loosen up… then I might have something that could help you fight the flashes from happening tonight… but it won’t work right now when you are so tense and defensive,” Beatrice explained as she saw Nikita relent a little bit.
It was almost an hour later before Beatrice walked into the bedroom and she turned off the big overhead light. She looked at Michael. “Why don’t you get into bed with Nikita?”
“Michael isn’t enough…”
“I’m not saying that, Nikita,” Beatrice interrupted as she didn’t want Nikita to tense up again. She watched as Nikita rolled her eyes but Michael got into bed and he turned off his bedside lamp, which left only the one beside Nikita.
“I want you to repeat slowly after me, Nikita… and Michael… why don’t you hold her?” Beatrice directed.
Nikita glanced at Michael and reluctantly allowed Michael to pull her closer to him. Beatrice sat on the edge of the bed. “Repeat this, Nikita…”
Nikita licked her lips and slightly nodded her head.
“I am safe.”
Nikita arched an eyebrow and sighed. “I am safe.”
“I am protected by Michael.”
Nikita waited and then sighed once more. “I am protected by Michael.”
“I do not need to remember bad things tonight,” Beatrice stated and Nikita turned her head to the side. Beatrice cleared her throat. Nikita replied with, “I do not need to remember bad things tonight.”
Beatrice nodded her head. “I am safe.”
“I am safe.”
“I can go to sleep tonight in Michael’s arms knowing that I will be fine,” Beatrice stated and Nikita squirmed slightly. “I can go to sleep tonight in Michael’s arms knowing that I will be fine.”
“All other memories can wait until morning, until I am ready to handle them,” Beatrice added and there was no hesitation from Nikita as she looked at Beatrice. “All other memories can wait until morning, until I am ready to handle them.”
Beatrice had Nikita continue to repeat this and Beatrice reached over and turned the light off. She then repeated with Nikita a few more times. “Close your eyes, Nikita… and say the words.”
Nikita hitched a breath but she closed her eyes as Michael wisely stroked her arms. “I am safe… I am protected by Michael…”
Beatrice swallowed silently as she noted a tear rolling down Nikita’s face now that she was sitting there with her eyes closed. But Nikita continued to repeat the words.
Beatrice did not need to say them for Nikita to speak them. Beatrice just sat there as Nikita’s voice grew softer and her head slightly drifted to the side. Yet, Nikita continued to speak the words. “All other… memories…”
There was silence and Beatrice got up off the bed. Nikita whispered, “I am safe.”
Beatrice did not plan on leaving tonight. She was going to stay in the guest room just in case Nikita had a flash because it would be hard for Nikita to go back to sleep if that happened. Beatrice would have to find another way to get Nikita to sleep because she wouldn’t go back to this if it didn’t work tonight.
“I am protected by Michael…”
