Mick placed his cup of coffee down with a sigh. “They aren’t having anyone over. Adam has been quiet about details too…”
“That’s because he has been punished for not following their rules,” Jason quipped as he shook his head slightly. “If it was next week, Adam would be talking to us. It’s just too soon since things happened for Adam to start going to against the directions given by his father.”
“Or maybe Adam agrees with what Michael and Nikita said they need – time to figure things out themselves,” Daisy posed the opposite side of Jason’s argument. Jason shook his head and looked at Tom. “Don’t you have some way to get to them?”
“I think it’s important for them to figure things out,” Tom replied and Laura took his hand and patted it. “And they always said that they didn’t want their needs taking over our lives.”
Daisy nodded her head in agreement with Laura while Mick frowned. “That’s a lie.”
“How would you know that?” Laura challenged and Mick rolled his eyes. “Would you tell your friend that you need them looking for your daughter like it is the only thing that matters in the world? No… you wouldn’t want to say that to them, but it doesn’t mean that it is what they truly want. I’m sure that they would prefer if everyone was working on this all the time.”
“It doesn’t mean that it is right,” Laura shrugged her shoulders as she looked over at Tom. “I liked the time that we have had for me to learn about your program… I think it’s cool how you are giving children who’s grandparents have passed away new grandparents.”
“Well, it’s hard running it from afar. It isn’t in this city… and I might be agreeing with Walter soon,” Tom revealed but it was clear that it wasn’t news to Laura.
“Move to the city?” Jason inquired with a smile on his face. “That will help save the environment with that gas-guzzling car that you drive.”
The table chuckled and Daisy tilted her head to the side. “So, what will happen to that program?”
“It would go on…. I just can’t continue to be holding onto it as I am now…”
“And then start the program here,” Daisy shrugged her shoulders slightly. Tom cleared his throat. “There is an existing program here in the city that is like it… I won’t step in like that.”
“You should because that program is crap,” Mick snorted as he rolled his eyes. “It’s all run in a nursing home… it isn’t good for the children… it’s like torture for them and most of the children involved are involved because of community service from the juvenile detention system…”
“It isn’t my style, Mick,” Tom explained with a slight shake of his head. “I won’t poach on that program. Even if they aren’t doing what I have done. I’m not the one to say what is right and what is wrong.”
“Fine,” Mick declared as he challenged Tom with the tone. “Then I’m not wrong by wanting to continue to look for Michael’s and Nikita’s daughter.”
The entire table groaned and Mick didn’t back down. “I have resources now… and I can take on the search.”
“We are getting there, Mick,” Laura revealed softly. “We just have to take a careful approach… we think this newest lead is solid.”
“Then let me go,” Mick announced with slap on the table. “I have to do something.”
“Man, you need to find a girlfriend or something,” Jason retorted as he rolled his eyes. “I’ve observed you for years… this has to be the longest dry spell for you.”
Mick’s eyes narrowed as he pulled away from the table. “There is no need to go that personal with me, Jason.”
“I thought you were busy with decorating clients,” Daisy offered to Mick as she tried to defuse the situation even more. “You can’t just leave them with undecorated houses.”
“Maybe I can go check out this new lead while finding new furniture and décor resources,” Mick pointed out and Laura glanced at Tom. Tom shook his head. “We wanted to talk to your father about this one, Laura.”
“I know,” Laura sighed as she looked at Mick. “We need to know more about this man. If he is known to be paranoid like my father, we can’t just start snooping around.”
The whole table started to talk and Walter walked in with a frown on his face. “Ah… how about not making a scene here folks.”
Silence engulfed the table as Walter swung his head from side to side. “It was something like this that got Michael into hot water… so I’m not going to start ordering people around.”
Walter pulled a chair over and waited for someone to speak. “Did you see them?” Mick finally chimed up.
“No,” Walter shook his head from side to side. “Adam had been emailing me since Lisa ran away… I know how awful it was for him not to get punished right away and I know about the almost full week that Nikita spent in the guest room.”
The quiet continued and Walter sighed as he looked around. “I would have stormed over there… but I think things are under control.”
“There ARE only a few reasons you wouldn’t have done,” Jason stated and then he groaned. “It is bad if Beatrice is staying there, Walter.”
“She isn’t staying there now,” Walter stressed as he frowned. “But she did a couple nights… I don’t know what is going on. Even Adam isn’t given up much right now.”
“I should follow up on this lead… so what if Michael and Nikita don’t know,” Mick declared. Moments later he was forced to shake his head as he had Walter, Jason and Tom staring at him intensely. “There is no way that they know what we know.”
“You are kidding yourself,” Jason shook his head. “We wait.”
“No,” Mick snapped as he stood up. “I don’t have to wait for permission from them.”
“Mick… maybe you should take a step back…” Laura spoke and Mick shook his head before he stormed out. Laura looked at Tom. “Are you going to stop him?”
“He’ll contact me for a cover ID… I’ll stop him then,” Tom informed everyone as he glanced at his phone and then around the table. “Should we be worried about Michael and Nikita? They usually aren’t this isolated.”
“Davenport is still in the house… and Ellie is in there,” Walter pointed out as he sighed. “But I’m not getting anything from either of them. They are sealed off.”
“It’s like D.C.,” Laura pointed out to Tom. Tom pulled back and took Laura’s hand. He got her point and he rubbed the table. “Ok… so… how about some help in finding me a house in the city.”
“For one person or for two?” Jason raised an eyebrow and waited for the answer.
