“I think your study is very interesting,” Principal Sourwine stated as she walked down the hallway. “We don’t start instructional physical education until the third grade here.”
Mick nodded his head as he held onto the clipboard. “I think it is important that we start with kindergarten children. That way they are used to physical education. It is important to combat the obesity issue head on from the beginning.”
Principal Sourwine opened the door and waited for Mick to enter. “Well, you’ll find Mr. Collins that we have two kindergarten classes and both are very active… we just have too many children on the younger years right now that we have had to split the class into two…”
The principal toured him thru the first class and Mick took some notes, although he was not interested so much in this class. As she opened up the second door to the next class, Mick felt his heart race right away. But as he looked at the group of children, he felt his heart slow down with disappointment.
“This group isn’t as active… we are handling some other issues with this class,” Principal Sourwine whispered gently as she looked to the other side of the room. “We gave them the bigger room, but we do have several children who are in the custody of the state and their foster homes have changed a lot.”
Mick followed her gaze and stopped as he saw the wavy chestnut colored hair that was just below the shoulders of the girl at the table. She didn’t look at him, but Mick felt his heart starting to race. He had thought that this girl, named April Jones in the records the school used, could be Michael’s and Nikita’s daughter. He didn’t have enough proof right now, but the hair looked like Michael’s.
“What do you mean challenges?” Mick asked and he watched as the Principal pulled him backwards. “Take the girl you are looking at… her name is April. She lives currently in a group home…”
“She looks old for kindergarten,” Mick stated and Principal Sourwine nodded her head. “She started here last year… but she didn’t talk… she barely talks now… but she is very smart…”
“Smart? Doesn’t talk?”
“She bounced around to a lot of homes… no one wants to foster her so she goes from group home to group home with children who are older… “ the story went and Mick swallowed back to the reaction to create some tears. Even if this wasn’t Michael’s and Nikita’s daughter, this was sad to hear. “I actually think she doesn’t talk now here because she is extremely bored with what was going on. I’ve seen her with some very advanced books in the library and I can tell that she is reading them.”
“Then why keep her here in kindergarten?”
“She has to reach some social milestones,” Principal Sourwine retorted louder than she had wanted too. She swallowed as no one turned to look at her, but it was clear that she was worried about that. She licked her lips and shook her head. “I can’t unless I can get her tested for intelligence… and the man in charge of her case… Mr. Gerald Cigna – refuses to call me back about anything related to April.”
“That sounds wrong. Maybe you should get her case worker changed,” Mick shrugged his shoulders. The principal shook her head. “I’ve tried… there is something more going on. Probably means that she was hurt in some fashion when she was an infant… something that means that she needs more protection or that it would be something that could give her away if she jumped grades.”
For the next ten minutes, Mick manipulated the story of his study in order to get permission from Principal Sourwine to try to ask April some questions. He was nervous as he approached the table and he pulled the tiny child-sized chair away from the table and sat on it to look at the girl, who was tall for her age and lanky. She didn’t look towards him as he sat down. Mick saw her dropped head and wondered if he was wrong.
Or if he would even be able to tell if he saw Michael’s and Nikita’s daughter by looking at her alone.
“Hi, April…my name is Mr. Collins… I was a gym teacher and I want to teach your class to play some games. Would you be interested in that?”
The girl slowly turned her head and lifted her head.
It zapped Mick as soon as he saw the eyes. Those intense blue eyes gave away all the emotion and pain that he had seen only once before – from Nikita. This had to be their daughter! Then he noted that she had the same facial featured of Nikita and he had to stop himself from jumping up right then.
“I hate my name,” the girl declared and she turned her head away and proceeded to ignore Mick as he asked her more questions.
Mick continued thru the motions of the pretend study in case he had the need to come back to the school for something more. But he needed to get out of there and call someone.
But not Nikita.
He knew that her biggest fear was that something would have hurt her daughter and it was clear that whatever was going on with April had hurt her.
Mick was in the car and realized who he had to call as he headed back to the hotel he had a suite at. He was at the red light when he got directed directly to Tom’s voicemail. He was sure that was because he was busy with Laura instead of doing his work on searching for this girl.
“Tom… It’s Mick. I have some important news to talk to you about… you can get me at my hotel…”
But that was all that would be left on Tom’s voicemail message as a car that was being chase ran thru the light and lost control. It crashed head on into Mick’s car, cutting the message off instantly.
