A car passed as Dr. Sara Holland stepped into the park, unsure about why she was sent to this park. She wasn’t a field operative and there were other doctors who were much more talented on the gun range than she was. She glanced at the paper and then stepped to the left and stopped.
“Hello Dr. Holland,” Nikita spoke as she stood there in the dark, the only thing light about her was the little bit of blonde hair that was hidden as well as possible underneath a dark scarf. Sara looked from side to side and could see Nikita’s guards not far away, but enough so she could speak without being overheard.
“Operations…”
“You need to follow these directions,” Nikita declared as she pulled out an envelope and handed it over to the doctor. Sara took it and swallowed hard. “Is this because I asked about you getting an annual physical?”
Nikita blinked her eyes and stared at the doctor as she was nervous and looking from side to side. She was afraid and Nikita wanted to tell her that this was a good thing. But Nikita never could tell those that she did not have a personal relationship what this meeting truly meant for them. Nikita could only hope that somewhere down the road when they figured out that they had been released from Section, that they would realize that Nikita had sent them on their way. “No.”
“I don’t even know why I’m out on a mission… I don’t do missions,” Sara protested as she rolled her hands and stared at the envelope. “There are others.”
“You do know how to remove your tracking device, correct?” Nikita inquired and Sara jerked her head back. “Yes… I’ve removed thousands… and inserted…”
“You won’t have to worry about inserting any longer,” Nikita interrupted but she swallowed hard as she realized that the statement sounded so cryptic. But Sara was on her way out. She was going to find that the directions were going to lead her to a city nearby where she would gather a new identification and then hook up with her handler who would help her stay a doctor in the military for a little bit. Why Nikita couldn’t tell her, but Nikita didn’t. There was no reason why Nikita couldn’t tell her the truth, but after seeing so many people leave, especially those that Nikita once considered her friends, Nikita couldn’t deliver the good news. “You’ll have to remove that after you leave this park. The directions are in that envelope.”
Nikita turned away and saw Pimp toss his cigarette off to the side and move closer to her. Nikita hated that guard and she found the ability to hide the fact that she despised that man. Nikita eased into the car as she spotted Sara dashing off towards her own car.
A free woman.
“I have some good news,” Ellie spoke as she stepped back into the room after spending time reviewing the chart information that Tom had provided her. She turned to see that he had not followed her back into the room. It was then that she saw Nikita jerk her head. It was a small sign of Nikita being trapped in memories. “Tom had access to your medical file… he said someone…”
“Jason is out too,” Nikita declared as she looked up at Ellie and winced as the cramping in her legs just did not stop. “I got him a copy of the databases… before…”
“It’s good that we have your medical file,” Ellie spoke as she did not want Nikita to think more about what had happened to Section. Just Ellie thinking about it brought on a massive mix of emotions. “I’ve been reviewing the details… it’s very detailed… before you became Operations.”
Michael looked at Nikita and Nikita looked at Ellie. Michael touched her shoulder and then he shook his head. “You were always bad about doctors, Nikita.”
“Michael forced me to the annual visits,” Nikita rasped as she gasped and squirmed as she sat there. “But there is something missing.”
Ellie placed the computer tablet down on the counter as she had scanned for the information that she thought would help right now. Even while she was skimming thru the file, Ellie realized that she had to get Nikita some relief from the current cramps before she could really find out what was going on. Ideally, Ellie wanted to find a muscle relaxer that Nikita had been on before and she had found that out. But Ellie was confused with what Nikita was talking about. “I can add things to your files now.”
Nikita looked down to her lap and swallowed hard. “I had a child.”
“Before Section?” Ellie inquired as she grabbed the tablet and started to navigate to the proper medical tab for this information. She did not think that this had anything to do with Nikita’s current condition, but she was thankful that Nikita was telling her.
“She’d be six,” Nikita looked up at the doctor as tears started to roll down her face. Ellie froze as she jerked her head from side to side. “No… that’s not possible. I was working in Medical at that time... you weren’t pregnant.”
“No one knew,” Nikita turned her head to look at the wall that allowed her to look at no one. She felt Michael rubbing her shoulder. She needed to get thru this information quickly. “Walter didn’t know until he helped me when I delivered her… and she left Section within an hour… of being…”
“It’s ok, Kita,” Michael whispered as he leaned into Nikita’s body. Nikita then jerked and turned towards Michael. “I did get all of the kids out, Michael… and none of them were clones… or from what we could tell... none were made from current or nearly current Section operatives… I had Jason run the tests as soon as I knew that Section was closing…”
Michael wrapped his arms around Nikita. “That was very good thing to do… for those children…”
Ellie was a bit lost and she looked at Nikita. She was pulling her legs up closer to her body which told Ellie that Nikita’s cramps were not getting better. “I want to give you a muscle relaxer right now… I know that it is one that you have had in the past… Not while I was in Medical since you never came down…”
“I couldn’t have anyone find out that I had been pregnant,” Nikita pointed out and Ellie nodded her head, although she thought that Nikita was only giving her a half truth right now. “Either way… I read in your file that you had this one after a mission with Michael that you were in a cage…”
The torturer known as Dominic stood in front of her with an evil grin on his face as he knew that he had control right now. “Your file doesn't indicate a sense of humor. That should be updated.”
Nikita held her stare at him and responded quickly with a chilly statement of “I'll be sure to tell them.”
Dominic was turning away and was about to walk. That was when two other men rolled Nikita along a track behind him. Nikita saw the metal cage approaching and she saw the rats in a cage above the cage she was heading directly to be inserted into.
“I am told that everybody is afraid of something. Something that causes an emotion beyond terror, a horror that defies description or definition. The senses shut down. The mind leaves the body. And reason is no more. Do you believe that?” Dominic spoke as Nikita was staring at the rats that were above her. Her stomach was bursting in fear and there was no way to get rid of memories from her childhood with rats.
“I looked at your file. I know where your fear lives,” Dominic gloated as he reached in and touched Nikita’s face. His finger felt like ice and Nikita tried not to respond but her eyes were locked staring at the rats. “Can't take your eyes off them, can you?”
Michael cleared his throat as he looked at Dr. Hlad. “That medicine really knocked Nikita out hard.”
“I’m not going to give such a large dose… but I would expect Nikita to sleep for just a little bit… it might be enough to stop her cramps for good…” Ellie replied as she stopped and looked at Nikita. “Was that the only thing that happened the last time you had that medicine, Nikita?”
” I don't have to. It's a lie. You're not ready to tell the truth yet. Just in a bit. This is a very simple technique...” Dominic continued to gloat as he reached up to touch the cage. His eyes told her what was going to happen before he verbalized the plan. But he of course was going to say it out loud. It gave him more power. “The cage fits onto your head. I will remove the wire screen and torch the rats. I'm told they'll do anything to get away from the fire. Anything, including eat through you, to escape. Of course, this is all theory. It's going to be a first for both of us….”
Nikita’s body was moving as she was pushed closer to the cage and her face was fitted into the opening that was there. Nikita gasped as the screen that had separated her face from the rats was removed. For a moment they didn’t realize that there was more room in the cage. Then a flame was turned on to case the rats to move and them to charge towards her face and start to try to get away from the flame, just as Dominic had promised.
“Kita?” Michael asked and Nikita gasped with a groan. She rubbed her chest and she shook her head.”I’m ok…”
“Are you cramping somewhere else?” Ellie inquired as she opened up the cabinet and got out the syringe along with the medicine. If Nikita was cramping somewhere else, she may have to get Nikita to the hospital. But stopping, she looked at Nikita’s face and saw a look that she knew well – that look of one stuck in the events of the past.
The hell of the day washed over her as the truth flared without censor. “You used me. You fed me the location thinking I'd crack under torture!”
Michael stood there without surprise that Nikita’s words were scathing and filled of hate. “We knew you wouldn't crack. That's why I was sent in.”
Betrayal filled ever ounce of her being even as they stood in the darkness of the enemies building. “What about all your words?”
Of course Michael blankly looked at her. Her mind was shouting and she couldn’t stop herself. “I finally get it. I finally know what attracts me to you. It's the character you pretend to be. The real Michael would disgust me, I'm sure.”
She was already to do something drastic to him, perhaps even punch him for his manipulation, when Michael finally spoke. “Can we finish this later?”
“We're finished!” Nikita declared as she grabbed him, wanting Michael to know that she was done with him. She had to say it. She had to let him know how upset she was even if she knew that there was no way to be finished with Michael.
Together they climbed the stairs and out of the shadows, there was a noise. Before either could see what was happening, the feeling in the air changed. But it was too late and Nikita was shot before she could identify what had changed. She cried out and the world darkened while she continued to scream at Michael in her head for his robotic acceptance of the directions to manipulate her.
“Nikita?” Ellie questioned as she shook her patient’s body. With that movement, Nikita cried out and rolled backwards, clutching her legs. She was between what was happening in her mind and what was happening now. Ellie had already measured out the dosage and knew that this was for the best. She moved to the bed and rolled Nikita’s sleeve up. “I’m going to give you this to help with the cramps… and I’m going to draw some blood and see what is causing the cramps…”
Nikita turned her head to look at Michael. “I always hated that mission… I didn’t get it… I didn’t understand until years later… how you could just manipulate... but I learned... and I made others do it too… I can’t believe I ordered people… to do what you did…”
“Shh…” Michael stroked Nikita’s hair back even as she was starting to drift to sleep quickly. He looked over to Dr. Hlad and cleared his throat. “She is thinking back to the Red Square mission… she’ll be fine.”
“That’s not fine,” Ellie announced as she turned and dropped the needle into the used needle container.
