The building was non-descript from the outside and much like Nikita had indicated; it was isolated and did not look like a living residence. It was away from neighbors and appeared to be almost to the point of being abandoned.

That was the outside.

Once Nikita opened up the cover to a panel of sorts that looked like it was rusted over, Michael noted that the building was a lot more than what it seemed. The panel was a very sophisticated panel that indicated that Nikita knew what she was doing in this building.

Entering into darkness, Michael could tell that the building was well maintained on the inside. When Nikita reached over for the lights, he had hoped for something much more than the sterile rooms that were surrounding him in shades of gray and lots of stainless steel.

“At least it doesn’t look like Section,” Michael spoke as he placed their bags down and looked around. There was something about the layout and feel that told him that it was familiar.

That scared Michael.

“Kita…” Michael spoke and Nikita walked to a table and dropped the keys. She ran her fingers along the metal and looked at Michael. “It was modeled off of the lab of Ivan Chernov.”

Michael couldn’t hide his sharp inhale. Nikita had barely made it pass the mission where Chernov had taken her eggs and she found the school on Level Eight. He had been no help to Nikita during that time as his mind couldn’t wrap around the loss of Adam. Michael knew that he had disappointed Nikita in his lack of emotion when she returned and his complete utter disregard to the discovery of Level Eight.

It was a long time later, after they had mended the wounds of other missions that Nikita admitted that while she had told everyone to leave her in play with the Chernov mission, she had been hoping that Michael would be the voice of reason to order her out. She spoke about how it felt like something had been raped out of her and Michael then got to feel the emotions of what he should have felt when it was happening.

“Why?” Michael finally questioned. It didn’t look as dark as Chernov’s lab. But he didn’t know where they were to sleep in this sterile place.

“It seemed logical… for the work that it may need to do,” Nikita responded as she continued to stand there. “I got all of the children out, Michael.”

“You’ve told me that,” Michael nodded his head and Nikita took a moment to inhale. She could see the small blonde girl in front of her like it just happened moments ago. Back then Nikita was sure that she was a clone of her or something along the lines. The age wasn’t correct for it to be her or to be related to her, but the girl had blue eyes and blonde hair along with a stare that was haunted like Nikita knew hers to be. Now often, this girl was the vision that Nikita saw her daughter growing up to look like. Nikita used to know where all of the children from Level Eight were but after she had to kill her guards; Nikita stopped looking at their progress.

Abruptly, Nikita turned from Michael and she walked down the hallway to push another door open. “The sleeping quarters are actually upstairs.”

Michael picked up the bags and followed after Nikita. He had worried that it was going to end up being cots or hospital beds given the rest of the building. He stepped up the stairs and he felt a bit of relief.

The room wasn’t colorful at all, but it was muted earth tones and there was a minimally outfitted queen size bed. Nikita turned to the side and flipped on a light that showed a matching bathroom. Nikita went to a desk area and turned on a couple switches.

“I thought you said this was off grid,” Michael spoke as he placed the bags down on the bed.

“Off grid doesn’t mean that I don’t have technology to turn things on like the air conditioning. We’ll have to get food in the morning,” Nikita spoke as she pulled out a small hand held computer. She worked quickly and Michael could feel the air cooling even more. He frowned and looked at Nikita. “Where is the power coming from? I didn’t see power into the building.”

“Solar,” Nikita answered as she looked at Michael and pushed the hand held computer away. “We can connect to the internet if you need it also.”

“I don’t need it,” Michael swung his head from side to side. With nowhere else to sit, Michael settled on the edge of the bed and looked at Nikita. “Are you going to explain more about this place or are we going to bed?”

“Are you tired?” Nikita inquired as she turned to face Michael. He jerked his head from side to side. “No… I was just wondering…”

Nikita simply returned to the stairs and walked back downstairs. She was leaning against a steel vault door when Michael got down. He watched as it completed a retinal scan and the locks began to unlock. Nikita turned the handle and pulled the door open.

“Kita?” Michael asked as Nikita entered the special vault. Michael hesitated and then entered behind her. “I don’t know what is going on here.”

“Secrets,” Nikita rasped as she looked at the containers in front of her and then stopped. She turned to look at Michael. “Did you see the equipment out there?”

“Not closely, but a lot of it looks like the equipment I use back in my lab,” Michael answered as he watched as Nikita’s eyes darted from side to side. She then backed away from the door that she was standing in front of to extend her hand to Michael. From her hand, she dropped a key. “Open.”

“What am I opening, Kita?” Michael inquired.

“You know… when I had our baby… Walter was looking for any reason not to leave with her…” Nikita’s voice cracked as her body could still feel the pain of her labor. Nikita looked up at the ceiling. “I had trained as a midwife… so when Walter left… I could take care of myself.”

“And this has to do with this key?” Michael questioned as he stepped closer to Nikita. She was quiet for a long time. “I kept everything.”

Michael paled with the thought of what Nikita had to go through for that. He looked at her face as he could see that her eyes still had her living those moments. “Why?”

“To find her,” Nikita finally spoke as she looked straight ahead at the door. “I am not… good enough.”

Michael looked at the door and then to Nikita. “Are you sure?”

“No,” Nikita shook her head from side to side while hugging her arms across her body. “She… she may have a wonderful mother… a mother who cares of her… will do anything for her… A mother to protect her and hold her while she is sick… kiss her boo-boos… absolutely a mother who isn’t as damaged as I am.”

Michael wanted to protest everything that Nikita said. But yet, they were standing here and Nikita had given him the key. “But we have too.”

Nikita stood there and stared. She gritted her teeth as her body wavered from side to side.

Michael wasn’t sure how long that they stood there in silence. Finally, Nikita dropped her arms down to her side and lifted her chin. “Open it.”
