Walter was whistling as he walked from the living room where he left Adam, Davenport, and Ellie. He was ready to get the show on the road and head to the church. It would mean that they were early, but Walter was dressed and ready to party.
Yet, he stopped whistling as he walked into the kitchen and saw the pensive look that was on Michael’s withdrawn face. “We are about to go to a wedding, Mikey.”
“Don’t,” Michael tersely replied as he didn’t even look at Walter.
“Something wrong with my Sugar?” Walter questioned although he could tell that he was right without even asking.
“We had an… early morning,” Michael turned as he rubbed his face. He sighed and looked up to the ceiling, not hearing Nikita coming, and his shoulders dropped some. “She was having memories of her wedding to Helmut.”
Walter paused for a moment as he didn’t immediately remember who Helmut was. He then tilted his head to the side and frowned. “The man who shot her?”
“Yeah,” Michael nodded his head up and down. “The marriage that should have never happened.”
“Oh, that marriage was going to happen,” Walter shook his head from side to side. Michael rolled his eyes and moved closer to Walter. “Well, it appears as if it will be on the only marriage for Nikita.”
“Hell,” Walter shook his head from side to side. “That wasn’t a real marriage. It was Section-fake.”
“I know,” Michael declared as he rubbed his jaw slightly and exhaled. “But Nikita said that we aren’t the marrying type.”
“What?”
Michael could tell that Walter was stunned by what he had said. Michael nodded his head up and down. “She has made it clear that she didn’t want an engagement ring… and now she is making it clear that she has no intention on marrying me… ever.”
Walter stepped away with a pronounce frown on his face. He walked to the doorway and then turned back to look at Michael. “What do you think?”
“I want her to be my wife.”
“Is that the only reason?” Walter questioned and Michael shook his head from side to side. H e moved his hand to his neck that was so sore right now and rubbed it. “I think… without this… this is temporary. That she could easily just disappear on me someday.”
“Nah… she isn’t going to do that,” Walter shook his head. Michael stood there and waited. Walter then thought about it and Michael watched as Walter closed his eyes.
Walter got what Michael was pointing at.
“If she has one of those really bad flashes… if the PTSD gets the best of her… or if we get into a fight that isn’t working out… there is nothing that helps ground her to me…” Michael spoke what he could see that Walter realized at this moment.
“When you find your daughter…”
“It will ground her for a bit… but I don’t think Nikita can see herself as being a mother…” Michael winced as he said the words. “She still can’t see how much of a mother she has been to Adam in this short amount of time.”
“But it will be her biologic—“ Walter started to protest but stopped. He realized that Michael had a point. He turned in a circle and tossed his hands in the air. “Then give her a ring.”
“She’ll turn it down.”
“Give her one every single day until she finally gets it… that this is permanent,” Walter declared as he leaned against the kitchen table and stared at Michael as if it was that simple.
“First… she knows the statistics on marriages…. Second… she doesn’t know what marriage truly is because she knows no one who truly was in a marriage… and third… she’ll get mad if I continually ask her over and over again,” Michael outlined.
Walter pushed off of the table with a huff. “If you have this all figured out as a no-chance to do anything situation, then why ask for help?”
“I wasn’t,” Michael bluntly replied as he looked down to the floor. He counted slowly and then looked back at Walter. He didn’t need to say that he was sorry for that comment. Walter could tell that he was. “This ceremony….the reception… it isn’t going to be easy for her.”
Walter nodded his head. “I think we all know that… even Rhoda.”
“Rhoda doesn’t,” Michael shook his head from side to side. He had seen Rhoda the past few days. She was floating on cloud nine and truly was oblivious to what was going on. “And no one wants Rhoda to know.”
Walter mulled his thoughts for a while and snapped his fingers. “It’s mostly a New Year’s Eve Party… the reception will have some wedding stuff… but is mostly a party of a new year.”
“As long as Nikita isn’t looking back over the past year,” Michael retorted and Walter shook his head from side to side. “Focus on the year to come.”
That was when they both heard Nikita walking upstairs. Walter looked at Michael and closed the distance between them again. “Are you giving up on marrying Nikita?”
“Never,” Michael whispered. “We will be married some day. She will be my wife, Walter.”
Walter slapped Michael on the shoulder. “You’ll make it happen.”
“She needs it,” Michael whispered as they both walked out of the kitchen to find Nikita walking down the stairs in the skin hugging midnight blue dress. Walter whistled and shook his head. “Sugar… you are a fine drink of cool cool water in that dress.”
Nikita stopped as she looked at Walter with confusion.
“You look wonderful, Kita,” Michael spoke as he walked around Walter and up to where Nikita had stopped to take her arm and to walk down the rest of the way. “We get to celebrate our hopes for the New Year.”
“Finally!” Adam declared as he walked out of the living room and stopped. “Wow!”
“Stop gawking boy! Step-mother… step-mother…” Walter pushed Adam’s shoulder so he walked towards the door even as he winked at Michael.
Michael knew that Nikita had noticed what Walter had said but she had not protested it. She was on her best behavior and it would be brought up at another time. Michael walked over for Nikita’s coat and helped her into it. He stopped and kissed her lips. “We are going to have fun, Kita.”
“I know,” Nikita whispered as she half smiled. She was really trying for everyone.
And it told Michael that there was still plenty of hope that some day that she would accept a proposal from him.
