The music was light for the moment after a long spell of upbeat songs. Nikita didn’t dance much as she watched Adam with their friends. It was hard to figure it out in her head.

Just this time last year…

“Kita?” Michael whispered as he took her hand from the glass of water that she had been holding for a long time. She had a lot of fun from the moment the reception started and Nat and Rhoda had walked in like they were Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. There weren’t many over-the-top romantic moments and that was good.

But Michael knew something – Nikita was exhausted.

“How much longer till midnight?” Nikita inquired as she turned her head and looked at Michael. She stifled a yawn and Michael glanced at his watch. “Almost over three hours.”

Nikita closed her eyes for a second and then rolled her shoulders back. “Are they still making coffee? Maybe an espresso?”

“We don’t have to stay,” Michael cupped Nikita’s face gently. He had reserved two rooms in the hotel for the evening if they decided that they were staying, but Michael had made a conscious decision to only toast the newlyweds with some champagne after he saw how difficult the wedding was on Nikita. He was surprised that Nikita had held up this long.

“We have rooms…”

“So we lose some money,” Michael shrugged his shoulders as he looked around and sighed. “Rhoda and Nat would understand.”

“But Adam is having a good time…”

“He wants out of the suit,” Michael revealed as he chuckled. Adam would also rather watch video of the New Year’s Eve celebrations on line than be in the reception. He had been a good sport about the reception and Michael had a feeling it was because he saw Nikita’s reaction earlier.

Nikita’s shoulder slumped slightly. “I want to be on the living room couch… looking at the tree… with the television on mute… in my pajamas…”

“So I guess there isn’t going to be any need to be quiet tonight,” Michael winked as he leaned over and kissed Nikita’s cheek. She didn’t even react to Michael’s statement as he started to stand up. She reached out for him. “Michael… I don’t really mean that… we should stay.”

“I want to be on our couch… in our living room… looking at our tree…while our television is on mute… just holding you until we start a new year,” Michael emphasized as he leaned down and paused before kissing Nikita’s lips. “Give me a few moments…”

That was how Nikita ended up on the couch, barely able to keep her eyes open to look at the tree, as Michael stroked her long hair from her face. She moaned gently as she opened her blue eyes to look up at Michael. “Last year…”

“This year has been hard, Kita,” Michael placed his fingers over Nikita’s mouth to stop her. “You may have been out of Section physically… but they still had you… but we both are starting a New Year in just moments…”

Michael kissed Nikita’s eyes and then her lips just as he pulled his fingers away. He looked at Nikita and placed his hand over her heart. “This year… we’ll finally just be… and I think that’s the best.”
