Michael turned his head in the bed and opened his eyes while his body registered the most important fact – Nikita wasn’t in bed with him.
Not jumping right out of his slumber, Michael groaned instead. He had plans to wake up this morning, the first day of the year, and make Nikita breakfast in bed. He was planning on blueberry pancakes and sausage, but now he was the one that was waking up last. Michael was about to look at what time it was when he saw a piece of paper on Nikita’s paper.
Adam and I were up early so we went downstairs to let you sleep in peace.
Love and kisses,
Nikita.
Michael turned his head to see the clock and blinked hard. It was almost noon!
Now his body started to move quickly as he wondered how long Nikita had been up. He had thought that she would be the one sleeping until noon. She should have been exhausted, even though she was the one that fell asleep first and he had carried her up to bed.
As Michael got downstairs, he could smell the fresh brewed coffee and then the laughter from the living room. He turned away from the kitchen and headed towards the living room. That was where he found Nikita and Adam.
They were still in their pajamas, sitting on the floor with their backs against the couch but huge bowls of cereal on the coffee table in front of them. Nikita had a mug of coffee and Adam had hot chocolate, at least Michael knew that it should be hot chocolate.
Adam was pointing at the television. “They spend how many hours on floats like that?”
Nikita shifted and pulled out the television guide and flipped to the article that she had found a couple days ago. “It just says that most of the flowers are put on the floats 48 to 72 hours prior to the parade.”
“Do people work all night long?” Adam asked as he tilted his head to the side. “Is that a dog on that float?”
“Well, all items on the floats are to be organic… and a dog is organic,” Nikita quipped as she looked at Adam. He dunk his spoon back into his cereal and was about to say something when he saw his dad. “Hey, Dad...”
“Happy New Year, Adam,” Michael said as he sat down on the spot on the couch that was closest to Nikita. He looked at the bowls and raised an eyebrow. “What are you eating for breakfast?”
“Brunch,” Adam declared as he lifted his chin. Michael arched an eyebrow. Adam laughed and got up to his knees while holding the bowl in his hands. “This would be Captain Crunch Peanut Butter… with Cocoa Pebbles… and Cookie Crisp…”
“Three cereals?” Michael inquired and Adam nodded his head. “That’s why it is brunch and not just breakfast.”
“And it was easy,” Nikita added as she looked up at Michael. Michael took the spoon from Adam and took a try. He chewed and then handed the spoon back to Adam as he thought about what he tasted. He swallowed and leaned back against the couch. “I guess that beats blueberry pancakes.”
“We can have them for lunch,” Adam smiled as he went back to the floor and continued to eat. Nikita shook her head. “Brunch is both breakfast and lunch, Adam.”
“But I’m a growing teenager… I need to get new jeans soon,” Adam pointed out and Michael rubbed his head. This wasn’t the day that he wanted to remember that Adam was getting older.
“We’ve only been up for a while…” Nikita reached out and touched Michael’s chest. He took her hand and kissed it. “You should have waked me up.”
“You were tired,” Nikita smiled back at Michael as she knew that he wanted to get up and take care of her this morning. She laughed and looked at Adam. “Besides…. I got to stop your son from hacking your computer again… and I got someone who wants to watch the parade with me…”
Michael and Adam both winced as Nikita mentioned the hacking. Michael decided to let it slide for now. He was just going to have to get Jason’s help. “This parade is all about flowers, Adam. You like this?”
“Don’t you see the hot chicks in the bleachers?” Adam quipped as he pointed. Nikita groaned and shook her head. “We can’t let him grow up and be like Walter, Michael.”
“That won’t happen!” Michael sternly declared as he leaned back and chuckled.
It wasn’t what he expected, but it was kind of fun.
