Adam put the apple juice back into the refrigerator after pouring a glass for himself. He closed the door and sighed. “So dad isn’t eating with us?”
“He is a big boy, Adam,” Nikita spoke as she turned from the skillet and looked at the table. “It’s just the two of us.”
Adam thought about it for a second and then grinned. “Cool.”
Nikita shook her head slightly as she didn’t agree that it was cool, but it was what it was. Nikita wasn’t going to go beg Michael to eat dinner with them, but she would leave him a whole plate ready to be warmed up later.
Nikita started to plate up their meals, taking the smallest piece of chicken for herself and leaving the largest in the skillet for Michael’s plate. She turned to see Adam fishing out the papers from the recycle bin. “Are we getting a hybrid?”
“Ah… no,” Nikita shook her head as she added the roasted baby red potatoes on the plate and then steamed broccoli. Adam was now at the table with the papers as she carried the plates to the table. “They were in the recycle bin for a reason.”
“You need a car… and this SUV is wicked cool… and it’s a hybrid,” Adam pointed at the picture of the Ford Escape that Nikita had been looking at for research purposes. Nikita settled the plate in front of Adam and sat down. “I was thinking about it…”
“Oh,” Adam knowingly smiled as he folded his hands. “Now I know why dad is upstairs.”
“I don’t know what you are talking about…”
“You don’t lie very well, Nikita,” Adam snorted as he shook his head. “My dad doesn’t want the car.”
“You aren’t part of this decision,” Nikita reached over and took the papers. She held them and looked at Adam as he was raising an eyebrow. He was willing to reach out for them again so Nikita stood up and sat down on them. “Your dinner is getting cold.”
“I hate broccoli,” Adam grumbled as he picked up a fork. Nikita rolled her eyes. “If it is green and your dad isn’t around… you don’t like it.”
Adam stabbed the broccoli and made a huge production of eating it. He watched Nikita cut up her food and he knew that she was upset with his dad. She always struggled to eat when things weren’t right, and this wasn’t right. His dad was pulling a lot of hours since the holiday, but he hadn’t missed a dinner yet and most of that was because he knew how difficult it was for Nikita to eat appropriately.
“So…” Adam spoke after he finished all of his broccoli first. He had learned to eat what he didn’t like first as it was easier when it was hot than when it was cold. “Do you know that Walter would support you getting that Escape… he is all about the environment.”
Nikita nodded her head. “He had modified some of the mission vans to be more efficient.”
“For missions…” Adam stated and Nikita exhaled. “Well, it was a two-fold benefit…. Better range for the vans on missions and better on the environment.”
“He has a solar panel at his cabin,” Adam pointed out as he speared some potato. Nikita finally started to eat some and she nodded her head slightly. “I knew.”
“He has really cool stuff… and I’m going to have him help me out with my science fair project… something about the environment… maybe about biodegradable materials,” Adam announced. Nikita blinked her eyes. “I thought you would do something on computers… with Jason.”
Adam pressed his lips together. He hadn’t been getting much response from Jason of late and that was because despite what he was telling Nikita, he was working really hard on the research for Michael’s and Nikita’s daughter. Adam wanted that to continue so he wasn’t going to ask Jason to help him out more. Plus Jason had layered enough security onto his system that Adam was finding it almost impossible to penetrate.
Adam shrugged his shoulders. “Everyone knows that I’m good with the computers… so I think I want to surprise them and do something different.”
Nikita swallowed some more of the dinner and grinned. “Diversity is good, Adam.”
“Chameleon like,” Adam agreed as he looked over at the stove. “Can I get some more potatoes?”
Nikita saw that the plate was empty and she nodded her head up and down. “Just leave some for your father.”
“Why?” Adam asked as he turned around from the stove. “He won’t let you get the SUV.”
“Adam,” Nikita shook her head wearily as she picked up the glass of water and took a sip. She was tired and she still had so much more work to do. “Just let it be, Adam. It’s between your dad and me.”
Adam frowned and left a good bit of the potatoes for his dad before returning to the table. “I didn’t think it was your night to cook.”
“Adam,” Nikita replied and Adam raised his hands in mercy. He finished his extra potatoes and picked up his plate before taking Nikita’s half eaten plate from her. “I may need your help with my math homework.”
Nikita winced and closed her eyes. Michael was so much better with math.
“Joking!” Adam declared as he jumped to his feet. “It was just the extra assignment that my dad gave me… I can’t wait until I get harder work at school.”
