Nikita jerked her head up and forced her hand to turn off the laptop. It was almost midnight and she had been working hard on trying to assist Jason. She just seemed to always be typing the wrong thing, especially for the past two hours. Her fumbling had caused her to backtrack and cover their tracks. It also was clear that she needed to go to bed.
Taking the path to the kitchen to try to make sure that all the plates were washed, Nikita walked into the kitchen and found the sink empty. That was when she realized that she hadn’t even heard Michael come downstairs for food. He could be damn quiet, but she couldn’t believe that he could have come down for food without making a sound. Nikita pulled the refrigerator open, expecting to find the plate gone and proof that Michael had been stubbornly silent while eating.
But the plate of food was still there.
Nikita shook her head at Michael’s stubbornness and flicked the light off before walking up the back stairs. She pushed the bedroom door open and looked at Michael. “You didn’t eat.”
Michael moaned as he turned his head. Nikita felt her stomach instantly flip upside down and inside out. She crept closer and swallowed. “Michael?”
Michael opened his eyes as his hands dropped to his stomach. “I think… I’m sick…”
Instantly, Nikita’s pulse started to race although she didn’t show it. She squatted down and looked at Michael while reaching out to turn the bedside light on. Michael winced grimaced as the light seemed to blind him and make his head pound even more. “Turn that off…”
“I have to look at you, Michael,” Nikita softly replied as she no longer worried about Michael being upset at her as she realized that Michael didn’t come down to eat because he was sick.
And it was clear that he was sick.
His hair was damp and curled around his forehead which indicated a fever and his face had lost all color, almost turning green. He grimaced again and pulled his legs up a bit more. “Just leave… Kita…”
“No,” Nikita spoke as she reached out and brushed Michael’s hair back. She had expected to feel his forehead burning up, but she knew that he was still running a fever, just not as hot as she had thought it would be. She waited for Michael to look at her. “Is it just your stomach?”
“Just too much acid…” Michael muttered and Nikita shook her head. “You have no color, Michael…. And you are guarding your stomach a lot.”
“Because I’m going to throw up!” Michael declared and Nikita moved quickly to move the garbage pail that was over by the dresser to the side of the bed. Michael tried to stop it, but his body ultimately won. Nikita retreated to the bathroom and gather a wash cloth and found Michael measly trying to leave the bed. “What are you doing?”
“Got to clean up,” Michael declared at Nikita placed her hands on his shoulders. He shook as if he had dropped backwards as if he had been standing. “Michael…. Your stomach…”
“It hurts, Kita.”
“But is it sharp pains? Like a cramp?” Nikita inquired as she tilted her head to the side. Michael moaned and leaned for the garbage pail again but nothing came up. “Hurts…”
“I’m going to call Dr. Hlad…” Nikita spoke as she stood there. Michael reached for her hand. “Leave her alone… this is just the flu.”
“She is downstairs with Davenport,” Nikita shook her head slightly. She swallowed hard and stroked Michael’s hair again. This didn’t seem like just the flu.
Nikita reached out for the phone as Michael leaned back against his pillow. She was sure that he didn’t even realize that he was groaning as loudly as he was. Nikita was almost sick with the thought of Michael being sick, but that would do him no good right now. She efficiently called Ellie’s cell phone and she could almost swear she heard it from downstairs.
It only took a few moments before Ellie came upstairs. She brushed into the room just as Adam was woken up. Nikita sighed and looked at Adam. “Your dad is sick… I have this under control.”
“But he didn’t even your food tonight!” Adam declared and Nikita tried not to take that comment as rudely as it sounded. Adam was scared for his father. Nikita was sure that Michael would have never allowed Adam to see him sick.
Ellie was only at the bed for a few moments before she walked back to Nikita. “I’m going to call for an ambulance.”
“What?” Adam cried out loudly in protest. “This is just a 24-hour flu!”
Nikita wrapped her arms around Adam and looked towards the bed and then to Ellie. “Did you tell Michael?”
“No,” Ellie shook her head from side to side. “But I don’t like where this pain is and we need to run some specialized tests…. It could be a gall bladder attack… a kidney stone…. Even appendicitis.
“They removed those,” Nikita pointed out as she remembered that Section didn’t keep appendixes in cold operatives. They weren’t a vital body organ that was most likely to fail. Nikita had hers removed two weeks into training as did everyone else in the same training class that she was in.
“Either way,” Ellie sighed as she knew how Section operated. “This is more than the flu.”
Nikita swallowed back the fear and the response that this wasn’t fair. She rubbed Adam’s arm and then she leaned down just slightly to look at Adam. “You are going to stay here…”
“NO!” Adam huffed and Nikita shook her head. “You won’t like the waiting room, Adam… I’ll go and wait in that draft dreary waiting room… and I’ll call you after waiting too many hours to find out that this isn’t that serious…”
Adam looked at his father and frowned. He didn’t like this. Ellie was walking down the hallway and he was sure that she knew something that they should know. “I want to go.”
“And I’m saying no,” Nikita firmly declared as she crossed her arms over her chest. She looked down the hallway to see that Ellie had finished the phone call and Nikita stroked Adam’s hair back. “I’ll call you as soon as we know what is going on.”
“But who is going to take care of you?” Adam asked and Nikita swallowed.
She didn’t know.
