“What are you doing still down here?” Ellie asked as she had just left the dining room to find Nikita in the kitchen. The woman looked like she was ready to go to sleep for a very long time, except Nikita’s eyes said that she wasn’t going to do that.

“How is he?” Nikita inquired with a hoarse voice. Ellie shook her head. “I can wait until the morning…”

“He was in pain,” Nikita countered without even waiting for Ellie to finish.

And Nikita was right.

Ellie had thought that Michael was doing well when she checked on him when she first came home. So did Helen. He was resting and not protesting to help. He appeared ready for the night and Ellie had retired to spend some quality time with Davenport, about to go to sleep, when Nikita barged in and declared that Michael was in pain.

On the surface, Helen didn’t see it. She actually was arguing with Nikita to the point that Ellie asked both Helen and Nikita to leave the room. She had even suggested that Nikita go to bed. But it shouldn’t have surprised Ellie that Nikita didn’t listen.

Ellie had brought back Helen into the room and confirmed to Nikita that she had been right – she had seen the pain that Michael wad disguising for everyone else. Ellie knew that Michael wasn’t at his best, but it was also not a smart thing to do. He had himself discharged from the hospital early because he was concerned about Nikita, but now she wasn’t allowing herself to rest because she felt that she was on the only one who could tell what Michael needed.

As Ellie tried to have a discussion with Michael and Helen about managing his pain, Ellie had again suggested that Nikita go to bed. That was a suggestion that she thought would be listened too since Ellie had already confirmed that Nikita was right – Michael was in pain.

“We have given Michael some more pain medication. Helen is not used to being around individuals who are highly tolerant of normal levels of medication,” Ellie explained. Nikita tilted her head to the side. “I should go in there now…”

“He is sleeping,” Ellie interrupted Nikita as she stepped to the side, ready to physically stop Nikita if she needed too. “And you should be asleep too.”

“Someone has to be with Michael…”

“Helen has that until four o’clock… and then Davenport is going to come out for a couple hours so Helen can sleep…” Ellie outlined the schedule that had been agreed upon a while ago. Ellie was also banking on the fact that the snow that was coming could cause a lot of places to be closed tomorrow. If it did snow.

“Davenport? He isn’t any good at telling if Michael is in pain,” Nikita complained and Ellie placed her hands on her hips. “Michael knows that he was wrong about that and he has promised to tell us…”

“And you believe that?” Nikita questioned as she shook her head. “I need to stay.”

“The only reason he wasn’t telling us about his pain is because he is concerned about you, Nikita,” Ellie dropped her hands and shook her head from side to side. “That’s the only reason he left the hospital. You were lying to him… all of us.”

“About what?” Nikita questioned and Ellie groaned. She couldn’t believe that Nikita still wouldn’t admit the truth. “You had PTSD flashes.”

“No,” Nikita declared with a short staccato answer and then she clamped her mouth tightly. Ellie moved forward and looked down to Nikita. “It would be natural for someone to face flashes while in a traumatic incident… while you were concerned about the life of the man that you love… It’s ok that you had them.”

“I was just concerned about Michael,” Nikita dully replied as she rolled her shoulders back. “I want to see him.”

“He is sleeping,” Ellie crossed her arms over her chest. “You should go to bed.”

Nikita stood up and pushed the chair back into the table loudly. Ellie closed her eyes with the sound and then opened her eyes to find Nikita hurrying upstairs. Ellie exhaled and listened to the noise of Nikita upstairs.

“Life and death isn’t easy on us cold operatives,” Davenport whispered from the doorway. Ellie shook her head from side to side. “It isn’t easy for anyone.”

Davenport nodded his head as he agreed with that. He looked towards the stairs and then back to Ellie. “Just let her be.”

“Nikita is the reason why Michael left the hospital,” Ellie announced and Davenport snorted. “Not the only reason. But the reason that you would accept easiest.”

Ellie didn’t like to think that Michael manipulated her, but with this group, she knew that it was probably the truth. Ellie went to the sink and took a glass of water to sip. She felt Davenport’s hands on her shoulders and she moaned in relief. “That feels good.”

“Good,” Davenport chuckled. “Because if this snow falls like it is supposed to… you’ll have to give me a massage tomorrow after I’m doing shoveling.”

“It’s only flurries right now,” Ellie pointed out and Davenport nodded his head. “Snow usually does start out with flurries.”

“How much?” Ellie inquired and Davenport shrugged his shoulders. “The forecasters are saying eight to ten.”

Ellie turned and arched an eyebrow. There sounded that Davenport had some other information. “And what? Jason doesn’t agree?”

“He thinks we’ll have eight on the ground by the morning… with another eight during the day tomorrow… and he is worried about another front that is moving faster with more humidity in it… I think I’ll be shoveling a lot.”

“And you told Walter to go home?” Ellie asked and Davenport shrugged his shoulders. “He’ll have more to do at his place… he is in the mountains… he already had four on the ground when he got home.”

“Damn,” Ellie shook her head from side to side. She could only hope that Michael didn’t think that he had to heal up fast enough to help with the shoveling!
