Adam walked into the room and looked around. It seemed so gloomy with the curtains that someone had hung up and it was wrong that his dad was in bed. He was about to sit down in the chair and open up his laptop when his father opened his eyes. Adam sighed. “Hey Dad.”
“Adam,” Michael whispered softly as he shifted and rolled his head to the side. “They are giving me too much medicine.”
“You should have stayed in the hospital,” Adam pulled the chair closer to the bed to sit by his father. He looked around and Michael sighed. “How is Nikita?”
Adam swallowed hard. He had some rules to follow and this question was a direct attack towards the directions he was given. But this was his dad and he knew Nikita more than anyone else. Adam didn’t think anyone was doing what was right, but Adam feared for his father’s health.
“Adam?” Michael questioned as Adam didn’t response. He could see even through the medication that Adam was struggling. “Someone told you not tell me about Nikita.”
“Everyone,” Adam nodded his head up and down. “And she is banded from seeing you.”
“What?” Michael questioned as he shook his head. “That is stupid.”
“I know,” Adam agreed as he leaned in. “But then… she hasn’t slept… and was trying to shovel her way out to get flour and sugar so she could bake me a birthday cake…”
“Oh…” Michael’s eyes filled with dread and regret. “Adam… I’m so sorry…”
“You are sick and you couldn’t have helped the fact that we have almost eighteen inches of snow out there…” Adam shook his head from side to side. Michael raised an eyebrow and Adam sighed. “They need to get the television in here…. You should see the amount of snow… everything is closed…”
“That’s why you didn’t go to school,” Michael whispered and Adam nodded his head up and down. “We are closed tomorrow too.”
Michael shifted in bed and knew that he had to discuss the level of medicine he was getting. Yes, he left the hospital early, but there was no reason for them to continue to give him as much as they were. “So… Nikita is banded because she tried to shovel…”
“Really early,” Adam jerked his head up and down. He looked over his shoulder and leaned in closer. “They think that she is sleeping…”
“She isn’t,” Michael rolled his eyes. Adam again nodded his head up and down. “I tried to tell them that… but it’s like Ellie says she is sleeping and everyone is listening… but if Walter was here… but he isn’t…”
Michael studied his son for a while and then he reached for Adam’s face. “This isn’t what you should be doing on your day off.”
“I’ll be shoveling,” Adam chuckled and Michael closed his eyes with regret. If he hadn’t been sick Nikita would be ok and he would be helping with the shoveling. Adam took his dad’s hand off of his face and pushed it back down to the bed. “I like shoveling… you know that I like the snow… and I’m going to try to build a tunnel to the street.”
Michael turned his head to the side and shifted again. “But Dad… Nikita…”
“I need to see her,” Michael declared as he focused back on Adam. “I need to see her as much as she needs me.”
“She isn’t talking,” Adam rubbed his hands together as he leaned back to check outside the door again. “I tried… you know… offering to watch television with her but she was on the bed in the guest room…”
Michael knew that Nikita wouldn’t sleep like this. If it wasn’t for the medicine, Michael would find it hard to sleep without her. He craved being near her and he wanted that. But Michael also knew that Nikita needed that more than he did. She needed to know that he was fine and healing now. His surgery had scared her to the core.
“She is lying about not having flashes…. But I don’t think she is having them that much… I just think she is tired… and not eating…” Adam revealed and Michael swallowed. He remembered another time that Nikita had put his well-being ahead of her well-being and that was when he thought he had lost Adam. Those weeks were awful and Nikita had suffered through it, even when Walter was trying to talk her out of it.
“Dad?”
“I’m sorry, Adam…” Michael whispered as he exhaled. “I can see how Nikita gets lost in her thoughts… not necessarily flashes… just memories that are painful.”
Adam stood up and moved to the edge of the bed. “I just want you to get better… and for those people to know that Nikita needs you. I don’t know why they would think this is a good time to keep Nikita away from you.”
“It isn’t,” Michael shook his head. “They want to give me a time to heal…”
“So you can get better and Nikita can get worse?” Adam shook his head from side to side. He was getting mad and that was pretty uncommon for Adam. He was pretty blunt but Adam was trying to hide his anger. “Just say it, Adam.”
“I don’t care if they gave me rules not to tell you about Nikita… because it’s stupid. They don’t always live here… and I think it’s stupid that they won’t let me try to help Nikita out to see if Mick had flour and sugar he could bring over here…” Adam rushed out. Michael patted Adam’s hand as he pushed up in the bed further. He was even feeling better while very worried about this. “That’s a good idea about Mick…”
“I know!”
Michael grinned and smiled. “I want you to call Mick… after you tell all of those crazy adults to get in here… Where is Nikita right now?”
“In the guest room,” Adam answered and Michael nodded his head. “You go up to Nikita after you call Mick… and Mick is going to find flour and sugar somehow… I have no doubt.”
“And you are going to talk some sense into those fools?” Adam inquired and Michael winced. “That isn’t a good way to talk about them… most often they know what is best.”
“But not for Nikita,” Adam’s face was firm and determined. Michael exhaled. “I think they are wrong about Nikita.”
“They are going to be mad…”
“I’m happy you still feel comfortable talking to me, Adam… you can always tell me anything, Adam. Even if someone thinks you shouldn’t,” Michael told his son because he knew that someday, Adam would probably not come to him. Michael never wanted that day to come, but Adam was just becoming a teenager and Michael held no naïve thoughts about what his son would or wouldn’t do when he really got into being a teenager.
And Michal was forever grateful that right now, Adam was being perfect, because Nikita needed that.
