“Did someone order the makings of a birthday cake?” Mick called out as he entered the house, practically dropping the heavy bag that he had carried while trying to get all the snow off of him. He couldn’t believe that it continued to snow and he looked back as he shook his head. “And does someone have some dry clothes?”
“Mick!” Adam exclaimed as he was the first out into the hallway. Mick smiled and turned his head and his body to the side. “Don’t get too close… I think I might have something for the birthday boy he shouldn’t see until after dinner.”
Adam jerked his head back and laughed. “Really?”
“Leave it to Uncle Mick to save the birthday,” Mick winked as Davenport walked out from the kitchen. “Uncle Mick?”
“Sounds good to me,” Mick smiled as he pulled off his boots and then unzipped his coat. Adam waited and sighed. “Can I take something to the kitchen?”
“How about you tell Nikita that I’m here?” Mick suggested as he dropped the coat to the floor. He looked at Davenport and Davenport shrugged his shoulders. There was snow everywhere and Davenport didn’t have anywhere else to put clothes right now. “I have something for you to change into… but they are going to be too big…”
“Michael?” Mick suggested and Davenport shook his head. “But I have clothes that were too big for Adam… things that Nikita bought him for Christmas.”
Mick picked up the bags and Davenport reached out for one and gasped. “What did you do? These are heavy.”
“Lots of options for cakes,” Mick replied back and Davenport shook his head as he tried to see the other bag that Mick was protecting. “You know that Michael talked to Adam about his birthday… Adam wasn’t expecting a gift.”
“This isn’t a gift for Michael to give to Adam,” Mick answered as he smiled. “It’s for Nikita.”
“Why would Nikita need to give Adam another gift? I think he has gifts from Christmas from Nikita that he hasn’t even used,” Davenport retorted. Mick trudged behind and shook his head. “You aren’t trying to be a parent to Adam… she is a mother of sorts of Adam and she would feel awful if she doesn’t have anything for him.”
“But no one could have predicted this kind of snow… and Adam understands that… That gift isn’t needed,” Davenport shook his head from side to side as he pushed into the small storage room and pulled down a basket. “I think something in here will fit… You can use the bathroom in my apartment.”
“You mean your remodeled garage,” Mick retorted with a chuckle as he grabbed the basket out of Davenport’s hands. Davenport shook his head and walked away, probably to shovel some.
It was a half hour later that Mick finally heard the noise that indicated that Nikita had come downstairs. He turned from the stove where he had started some hot chocolate and smiled, even though the clothes were just inches too short. “Hey there, Popsicle.”
Nikita lifted a hand and opened it in a half-hearted wave. Mick immediately fixed a cup of hot chocolate and placed it at the table where Nikita had settled down. Nikita looked at it and took one sip and then turned her head to the side.
“Things have been tough for a couple days… and I’ve come to the rescue to make Adam’s birthday… still have a party,” Mick announced as he watched Nikita. He hoped that she would look at him, but she shrugged her shoulders instead.
Not to be daunted, Mick went to Nikita’s side and pulled her hand. “Come on… I want to show you something…”
Nikita didn’t protest but she wasn’t happy either as she stood up. Mick walked to the closet that Davenport had found the clothes and opened it up. He had stashed the bag with the birthday gift inside of there. He lifted it and placed it in Nikita’s hands. “It’s for Adam.”
Nikita pushed the tissue paper to look inside. She saw the gift and knew that it was a great idea for Adam. It wasn’t elaborate. It wasn’t a video game and it didn’t even plug in. But it was perfect. Nikita handed the bag back and smiled at Mick. “He’ll love it.”
“He’ll be happy that you are giving it to him,” Mick nodded his head as he settled the bag back down. He saw Nikita shaking her head from side to side. Mick groaned. “Popsicle… it’s your gift for him… I just happened to bring it.”
“You thought of it,” Nikita countered as she walked back to the table. Mick closed the door and walked to the table and sat down near Nikita. She looked so tired and Mick sighed. “If you don’t give it to him, I’m going to give it to him and tell him that you got it… It doesn’t matter that I got it… It will matter so much more that you like it and that you give it to him.”
Nikita turned her head to the side. Mick wanted to hear Nikita speak more and he sighed. “Please, Popsicle.”
Nikita looked back at Mick and blinked her blue eyes slightly. “It’s wrong.”
“It isn’t about if it is the truth. It’s about what Adam needs. You are concerned that he isn’t going to have a gift from you… he doesn’t need it, but you need it. So this is the gift for you to give him…” Mick explained as he looked right at Nikita. He knew that Nikita caved when she slightly nodded her chin up and down. He smiled and walked back to the stove. “So… how about something to eat?”
Nikita shook her head from side to side. Mick didn’t like that at all. If Nikita hadn’t slept, she hadn’t eaten either. “Come on… you are going to be needed for the shoveling crew so you need to eat something.”
Nikita shook her head from side to side again. “Not hungry.”
Mick pressed his lips together, knowing that he had to take another approach. “Will you help me with Adam’s cake? You wanted to get stuff for a cake and I brought a ton of stuff.”
Nikita shrugged her shoulders. Mick gasped. “You are the baker! We just finished all the Christmas cookies.”
Nikita shook her head from side to side and glanced at the freezer. Mick rolled his eyes. “Adam is not going to have defrosted Christmas cookies when he should have a birthday cake!”
Nikita sighed and waited a long time. “Ok…”
Mick smiled as he pulled the bags up to the table and started to pull out ingredients, not just flour and sugar. He found several jars of peanut butter and put them on the table. “Adam likes peanut butter, right?”
Nikita nodded her head up and down. “That sandwich that Elvis liked.”
Mick paused and knew that this was the opening that he wanted. “You mean the peanut butter and bananas?”
“Yes,” Nikita responded. Mick went through several more bags and then pulled out bananas. “I guess it’s good that they didn’t get frostbitten while I walked over here.”
Nikita even chuckled a bit and Mick slapped his hands together. “Well… since we have no recipe… I think it should be a chocolate cake with peanut butter and bananas.”
“We can search for a recipe,” Nikita offered and Mick waved a hand at Nikita. “No… we can figure this out… How about we make a sandwich and taste it to make sure that we are on the right path?”
Nikita was looking at Mick wearily but he continued to move since she did not protest that idea. Mick knew that he was on the right path when moments later Nikita was eating that sandwich.
And he didn’t need to worry about a recipe, he knew this one quite well since it was one that Adam had emailed him right after Christmas.
But Mick knew that the cake didn’t mean as much as it did mean that Nikita was eating. He slapped his hands together as he started to get the bowls. “I think we should make two… one to test… just to be sure…”
