“That was good pizza,” Adam grinned as he pushed his plate away, having had several pieces of pizza, minus the crust which still sat on the plate. Nikita sat on the far corner, almost as far away from Michael as she could. She had one piece of the Cajun Pizza and Walter wished that she would have had more.

Michael had two pieces of a simple pizza, as it wasn’t sure how he was going to do. But he patted Adam’s back and smiled right now. “Keeping room for that cake, right?”

“Nikita made it especially for you,” Mick chimed up as he knew that he had finished off the cake, but he wanted to give Nikita the credit.

Nikita didn’t protest what Mick had said and she dropped her eyes slightly.

“One piece shouldn’t be bad,” Ellie spoke as she looked over at Michael. The doctor was being very careful, but it was clear that Michael had expectations of what he should be allowed to do and what he shouldn’t be allowed to do.

Mick jumped to his feet and Helen stood up to dim the lights. Adam laughed as he shook his head back and forth. “You don’t need to sing!”

But they all sang – even Nikita. There was one candle for Adam to blow out and he did an excellent job before he was given the honor of cutting his own cake.

”I see you found Adam’s baby book,” Elena smiled brightly as she placed a cup of tea down on the coffee table for Nikita and down right beside Nikita. Nikita nodded her head up and down and turned the page to see a picture of Adam covered in cake. “What’s this?”

“It’s Adam’s first birthday,” Elena chuckled. “I swear I was getting cake out of his hair for weeks afterwards.”

“Why did he have cake all over him?” Nikita asked as she saw how many pictures were devoted to Adam being covered with cake.

“It’s what a baby does on their first birthday,” Elena laughed more. “And Michael was so happy that Adam just dove into that cake… he was right that we needed to have one cake for Adam to just mess around with and another cake for us to have…”

“Michael suggested this?” Nikita inquired as and Elena nodded her head up and down. “Oh yes… I wasn’t sure that I wanted my baby son to be covered in cake… in fact, I think Michael might have trained him to do that with cake… I had never seen Adam get so messy with his food… well, it was the first time that I saw it… but I found out quickly that Adam liked to be messy… all babies do.”

Nikita turned the page and saw a picture of Michael with a fork actually giving Adam some cake while he was covered with the cake.

“It’s lucky that Michael was there,” Elena touched her finger to the picture. “He had been called out to work on some sort of emergency that only he could handle… I had forgotten to order the cakes… and he had called not sure if he could make it… said someone on his team was sick… or got hurt while they were out of the country… but he came in right at the right moment… with both cakes.”

Nikita blinked her eyes as she probably was the reason why Adam almost did not have his father there for his first birthday.

“Michael gets called out so often… he only missed one birthday… and that was because he broke his leg…” Elena shook her head from side to side. Nikita swallowed hard and rolled her shoulders back as she handed the book back to Elena. “Sounds interesting.”

“You’ll experience your own child’s first birthday… and you’ll know it is something you’ll always remember,” Elena patted Nikita’s hand gently as she flipped the page and continued to talk about the pictures of Adam.

Nikita blinked her eyes as she saw Adam slipping a huge piece of cake onto his plate and then handed over duties of cutting the cake to Mick. She never did get a chance to see her daughter’s first birthday. Knowing that she had been in the mix up with the mob, Nikita wondered if they even knew when her birthday was and if she got to celebrate it with a cake. Surely she didn’t get two cakes.

“Kita?” Michael asked as he looked at the piece that Mick was holding out for her. Nikita took the plate and smiled at Mick. “Thank you, Mick.”

“Are you ok, Kita?” Michael asked again as he looked across the table. Something was going on in her head and he wished that she had sat next to him.

“I’m fine,” Nikita spoke as she stabbed the fork into the cake.

“It’s good that we made two cakes!” Mick declared and Adam laughed. “Just like my first birthday, huh, Dad?”

“Yeah,” Michael ruffled his son’s hair as he smiled at him. He took a small piece also, actually feeling quite full and ready to get back into bed.

Nikita felt her stomach flip as she struggled to swallow down the first bit of the cake. She managed to force a second bit down before pushing the plate away. She waited for everyone to finish, wishing to get away. She turned her head to the side and she swore that she saw Elena standing in the doorway.

“Kita?” Michael questioned again as he saw Nikita staring off. Nikita rolled her shoulders back. “Ready for a gift, Adam?”

“I thought I was going to have to wait,” Adam was stunned and licking the last of the icing off of his fork as Nikita stood up. She shook her head from side to side and got the bag that Mick had put into the closet and returned with it. “With an assist from your Uncle Mick.”

Adam didn’t wait. He tore into the bag and then stopped as his hands touched the item inside.

Nikita leaned against the doorway as she watched Adam lift the handcrafted leather wallet in his hands. He looked at Nikita. “How did you know?”

Nikita swallowed. She had planned on buying Adam one. She had been part of the conversation where Michael told Adam that he got his first true wallet when he became a teenager and that he would get one when he was a teenager. Nikita had struggled not to buy one for Adam during Christmas, but she didn’t, remembering this conversation.

But how did Mick know?

“Nikita told me about that conversation that you and your dad had with her,” Mick chimed up as he looked at Adam. “Nikita told me that she wanted to get something special for you… and I happened to know someone who makes handcrafted wallets… you should open it up…”

Adam did not rush this time. He moved slowly and then looked at Nikita. “It’s the picture of me and my dad from Christmas that you took.”

“I can take a picture or two,” Nikita rasped as she looked over at Mick. He was making her look too good.

Nikita shifted. “And I’m sure that there is a spot for a picture for your mother in there.”

Adam shook his head from side to side. “Davenport will have to take a picture of us together, Nikita. You need to be in here with me.”

“It should be your mother,” Nikita swung her head from side to side. “Not me, Adam.”

“But I want you,” Adam protested and Michael cleared his throat. “There are plenty of slots.”

“Yeah…” Mick winked and nudged Adam. Michael glared at Mick and Mick raised his hands. “There is some emergency money in there… what else did you think I put in there?”

“You, Mick?” Walter questioned with a laugh.

“Excuse me,” Nikita choked up as she slipped out of the room and then everyone heard her go upstairs. Adam looked at his dad. “What did I say?”

“Nothing,” Michael tiredly swung his head from side to side. “You know… I think I need to rest, Adam.”

“And we are going to get that extra television into your room,” Walter snapped up to his feet. Michael wanted someone to check on Nikita and Walter didn’t need to be told. He slipped out of the room and after Nikita. He got to the stairs and saw her sitting at the top. “Sugar…”

“I’m not his mother…” Nikita spoke and Walter nodded his head. “He knows that. But he also knows that you are special.”

Nikita closed her eyes and looked towards the wall.

“What else are you thinking about, Sugar?”

Nikita shook her head. “Nothing.”

“Don’t lie to me, Sugar.”

“What does everyone think that I’m lying! Do I lie all the time? Is it because I was Operations that it means that I lie?” Nikita shouted as she jumped to her feet and stormed away.

Walter dropped his head as he stood there, knowing that right now, going after Nikita would do no good.
