Mick rubbed his eyes as he staggered into the kitchen for some water. He was sleeping on the loveseat in the living room since he wasn’t about to trudge back in that snow to the other house. He turned and stopped as he saw Helen sitting in the dark. “Ah…. Sorry.”

“I have some decaf tea on the stove,” Helen spoke as she looked up at Mick. He thought about it for a second and then went to the stove. He gathered a cup and went to the kitchen to sit with down. “Why are you in here?”

“Nikita is in with Michael.”

“That’s great!” Mick declared but then dropped his smile as he looked at Helen. “Why aren’t you happy?”

“She isn’t in bed with him… that we all thought would be best…. Go look,” Helen looked to the doorway. Mick left his cup to look into the dining room to see Nikita leaning forward so that her head was just barely on the bed. Michael’s hand was on her head and every once in a while, it moved, as if he was still trying to sooth her while in his sleep.

Mick watched the scene and he shook his head. This wasn’t the Nikita knew ever knew!

Mick returned to sip at his tea some before he looked up to Helen. “I wish you would have not met her… while she is like this.”

“She is troubled,” Helen spoke and Mick shook his head from side to side. “She isn’t troubled in that sense. She just… you wouldn’t understand.”

“Everyone keeps on walking around the issues here,” Helen declared as she rubbed her hands together. “I’d like to get the truth.”

“It could be dangerous,” Mick warned as he placed the tea down and stared into the cup. “I know too much… I wasn’t in as deep… well…”

“Dr. Hlad had told me that it was almost military in nature,” Helen commented. Mick swallowed and turned his head to the side. “You are a lot like I was… before I was brought into this world. I was an outsider… I wasn’t given much choice… I was in deeper than I knew I was going to be when I said yes to an offer to be an actor…. We are trying to protect you.”

“If this is still a danger…”

“The problem isn’t a real danger anymore,” Mick shook his head from side to side. “It’s a danger of what has happened… and what it does to the spirit of someone… what it has done to Nikita… but I know that it wasn’t just that place.”

Helen sighed and shook her head. “You are speaking in riddle, Mick.”

“God, I’m glad that I kept that name,” Mick stated as he rolled his eyes. Helen arched an eyebrow and Mick leaned forward. “In ways, what was bad for Nikita… was also good. She wouldn’t have gotten away from her mother… she wouldn’t have met Michael…”

Helen retrieved another cup of tea and then looked at Mick. “It isn’t right that someone needs a man like that.”

“That isn’t the real Nikita,” Mick shook his head from side to side. “I can only hope that we all can bring her back… and there are some glimpses of her…”

Mick winced. He had seen it a bit when she was working on something that meant something to her, and that had been when she was doing the small things that everyone said where her being the angel. It was a purpose in Nikita and he wasn’t going to be the first person to say that maybe the angel was good for Nikita. He rubbed his face and smiled at Helen. “How did you get asked to do this?”

“I’ve worked with Dr. Hlad,” Helen spoke and Mick smirked. “You can’t call her Ellie, can you?”

“I worked for her,” Helen pointed out and Mick nodded his head. “But not anymore?”

“Well… no…” Helen shook her head. “I’ve been off on leave.”

“Yet you are here,” Mick stated as he looked at Helen. She pressed her lips together. “I nursed my mother thru hospice… that’s when I first met Dr. Hlad.”

“I’m sorry,” Mick whispered and Helen shook her head. “I wouldn’t have wanted another nurse to take care of my mother in those last days… and she didn’t want anyone else but me… and my brother…”

Helen’s eyes filled with tears and she swallowed.

“What happened with your brother?” Mick inquired as he leaned forward and touched Helen’s hands. She looked at Mick and then back to the table. “You don’t want to know this….you are worried about your friends.”

“I’m talking to you now,” Mick pointed out and Helen exhaled. “He is alive… but decided to go to a program out of state.”

“For?”

“He was a police officer,” Helen commented as she then stopped and cleared her throat. “He got into a shootout with someone… He was lucky to survive… no many survive getting shot in the head…”

Mick tensed and moved his chair closer to Helen. “He survived… that’s good…”

“He is blind,” Helen turned to look at Mick. She swallowed hard. “At first it didn’t even seem as if the person responsible for his blindness would get found… then one night… at the doorstep of my mother’s house… were I had brought my brother home to recover… there was a gift from the angel.”

Mick tried not to react, but he suddenly realized that Ellie had been very smart with picking this woman. It proved how small of a world it was.

“A gift?”

“The man responsible… I didn’t even know that he was out there until there were sirens all around the house… and the police knocked at the door to make sure we were ok,” Helen shook her head slightly. “The man was tied up… with a bag of evidence chained to his feet…”

Mick was impressed. But he wasn’t about to tell Helen that it was Nikita who had made that happen.

“And there was also a box… they had opened it, not sure what it was going to contain… but it held brochures to multiple programs for people who were suddenly blinded… and several bank accounts that contained money that more than enough paid for the programs… any of them…” Helen pulled her hands away. “He is doing so much better… but I miss him.”

“Why didn’t you go back to work for Dr. Hlad?” Mick asked and Helen shrugged her shoulders. “I needed respite from providing care… so I was surprised when she called me… but she had held onto a position for me all of this time that I couldn’t say no to this…”

“Even though at that point you knew that you would get snowed in here?” Mick inquired and Helen chuckled. “Dr. Hlad said that she owed this man a favor… and I knew Rhoda… I had even seen Michael and Nikita at Rhoda’s wedding to Nat.”

Mick blinked and then realized that was why Helen looked a bit familiar.

“You know, there had been this rumor that I heard around the nurses… that the angel was once in the hospital… and that she had blonde hair… and there was this man who had vivid green eyes who was there with her… and that magically she got discharged and all of the paperwork disappeared,” Helen continued as she chuckled. “For a bit… I wondered if it was this Nikita. But it can’t be….”

“Someday you’ll just have to ask her yourself,” Mick carefully spoke and Helen chuckled. “She isn’t the angel.”

Mick picked up the tea cups and placed them into the sink. “Do you want the loveseat?”

“I should check Michael,” Helen stood up and Mick shook his head from side to side. “Nikita is there.”

“She isn’t well enough…”

“You still don’t know Nikita,” Mick guided Helen out of the kitchen and turned the light off. They both stopped to look in and saw that nothing had changed between Michael and Nikita. Mick sighed and Helen stopped when she looked in the living room. “I can’t take the loveseat…. There is nowhere for you to sleep…”

“I’ll take the recliner,” Mick pointed out and he waited for Helen to nod her head. She looked over to Walter who was sprawled out on the couch and settled down on the loveseat. She looked at Mick as he sat down on the recliner. “Good night.”

“Night,” Mick replied as he turned his head slightly and saw that it was starting to snow, again.
