Nikita zipped up the ski jacket as she stepped out onto the back porch. It was early and she was sore after an uncomfortable night sleeping at Michael’s beside with her head on the bed. She should have gone to bed at any other point, but once her eyes had closed, she couldn’t wake up until she had smelled the coffee this morning.
“Morning, Kita,” Michael gently spoke as she looked up from the bed and saw Michael was awake and stroking her head back. He tilted his head to the side and smiled gently. “Join me in bed now?”
Nikita had jumped away from the bed with a groan and found herself in the kitchen getting coffee. That was where she saw Adam slip outside after barely managing to get his dishes into the sink. Nikita had settled down and pushed some cheesy scrambled eggs around the plate and barely ate some toast before declaring that Adam should be helping with the shoveling and not playing in the backyard.
“Adam?” Nikita called out as she looked at the vast white cover that filled her sight from the line of the property. The fence was so far away but yet she saw no real detail of where Adam was. Her heart started to race, wondering if Adam was trapped out there somewhere and how was she going to find him.
“Hi, Nikita!” Adam called out as he popped out almost all the way to the fence. Nikita looked down and saw the barrow hole that was t the steps. “Did you dig a tunnel out there?”
“Yeah!” Adam smiled up and down as he waved. “Come out here. It’s fun!”
“I can’t walk out there in all this snow!” Nikita cried out as she tossed her head from side to side. “We need to go outside and start shoveling.”
“It’s still snowing,” Adam pointed up to the sky as he laughed. “So why shovel right now?”
“Because there will be even more snow if we don’t start now,” Nikita protested as she placed her hands on her hips. “Come on, Adam… you have plenty of time to play later.”
“Come on, Nikita… come play in the tunnel… It’s plenty big for you too!” Adam declared as he ducked back down into the snow. Nikita looked around as she frowned. “Adam… it might not be safe!”
“It’s not a ton of snow, Nikita!” Adam’s voice echoed through the tunnel and then with some more noise he was well away from where he had been as he stood up. “Come on… my dad would always come out with me when we had snow.”
Nikita frowned and rubbed her head. “Come on, Adam… you get back up here.”
“Make me!” Adam declared as he disappeared underneath the snow again.
Nikita felt tears coming out of her eyes. She couldn’t believe that Adam was doing this to her. It was unfair and it hurt her. She was about to stomp back into the house to tell Davenport to come out here and take care of Adam. But she wiped the tears away and plunged into the tunnel. “I’m not happy about this Adam…”
Nikita moved through the snow and then stopped as she realized that there was a choice. Adam had built a maze into the snow! “Adam… how am I supposed to find you!”
“I’m over here,” Adam giggled as he knew that she had no idea which way to go. Nikita turned to her right and continued into the snow. “I can’t believe I have to crawl out here to get you… like you are a little child… running away… it’s absolutely ridiculous and a waste of time, Adam.”
“We have days to dig ourselves out,” Adam groaned and Nikita stopped. It sounded as if Adam was behind her now. But she saw light ahead and she went to that spot and popped up to look around, finding that she was not that far from the house. “Adam!”
Adam was back to the original spot and Nikita pointed her finger. “Stop moving!”
“That wouldn’t be any fun,” Adam shrugged his shoulders and dropped back into the maze.
Nikita dropped back inside and realized that she was at a dead-end which meant that she had to go back and continue going straight. She looked around and exhaled heavily. “Please, Adam… I’m so very tired… and I need to get us out of the snow… and shovel… and dig your father’s car out…”
“There are others in the house to help with that,” Adam called out and Nikita huffed as she saw another branch coming up. “Adam, your dad would hate to hear that you are doing this to me.”
“I think he would think it was funny,” Adam declared and Nikita fought against tears. “He is sick, Adam!”
“He isn’t sick. He is getting better. That’s why he had surgery,” Adam countered as he was clearly above the surface again. Nikita wanted to see the light and had it. She forced her way up and Adam groaned. “That’s not fair! That isn’t an entrance.”
Nikita saw Adam was not that far away but knew that neither direction in the tunnels took her to where Adam was right now. “Life isn’t fair!”
“Yeah, it isn’t fair… but this is just a game,” Adam slipped back into the snow. Nikita slipped back down but leaned herself against the tunnel, allowing tears to roll down her face. She was frustrated and tired. She hurt so badly and she couldn’t believe that Adam was doing this to her.
She was cold and her head was really sore. She didn’t know what Adam was trying to do by making her do this, but she wasn’t sure if she even wanted to see him.
“Nikita?” Adam stood up and looked around the yard. He could hear her crying and he felt awful. “Nikita? Where are you?”
But Nikita didn’t hear Adam. She leaned her head back in the tunnel on the snow and sobbed.
“Nikita? Please…. I was trying to make you laugh… I didn’t want to make you cry,” Adam declared as he slipped back down, knowing that he had to crawl to her quickly. He was almost sure that he knew where she was and she wasn’t that far. He had actually stopped scrambling around and away from her awhile ago and was heading towards her when he realized that she wasn’t having that much fun at all. But now, he was so guilty for doing this to Nikita. “Nikita? Nikita?”
“Leave me,” Nikita rasped as she pushed her gloved hand over her face.
Adam turned the corner and saw Nikita. He slid forward slightly and touched Nikita’s head. “I’m sorry… I’m sorry… I thought we could have some fun… that you would like this…”
“Leave me,” Nikita shook her head and Adam looked around and started to push at the snow. He started right above him and was careful not to have the snow fall on Nikita’s face. He worked until the hole was large so he could sit down and look at Nikita.
Nikita looked up at the blue sky and pushed her body up. “I’m sorry Adam…”
“I’m sorry,” Adam shook his head as Nikita still wasn’t looking at him. “I wanted you to have fun.”
Nikita rolled her shoulders back then looked back to Adam. “Adam… I know... but I just can’t have fun now… there is too much going on.”
“Flashes,” Adam whispered and Nikita jerked her head away. She couldn’t lie to him, but she couldn’t admit it either. “I know that you don’t want to talk about them, Nikita. But we all can see…. Especially last night during dessert….”
“I was remembering things.”
“You were having a PTSD flash,” Adam shook his head from side to side.
“I don’t mean to hurt you,” Nikita whispered as she shook her head, still not admitting to what was going on.
“You don’t hurt me until you say that you aren’t having a flash… because I know. We all know. That’s when we hurt…. Because we know that you are hurting,” Adam explained. He touched Nikita’s back and sighed. “I’ll help shovel… I was going to do that.”
Nikita pulled her thoughts together and felt the tears freezing on her face. “Adam… I don’t expect you to be the man right now… I just need help doing this…”
“I like to shovel,” Adam spoke as he was almost too cheerful. But Nikita didn’t glare at him knowing that he was exaggerating. She should have glared at him, but Adam was waiting.
“You’ll get an allowance,” Nikita rasped and Adam smirked. “My dad would hate to hear that you paid me.”
Nikita stood up into the hole and looked back to the porch. “Adam…how could you build these tunnels….”
“It’s ok to walk back to the house,” Adam sighed as he knew that Nikita was tired.
“I can’t ruin your work,” Nikita spoke as she turned back into the tunnel and quickly was back at the porch.
She was running away and Adam wasn’t sure if he did anything but make things worse.
Adam got back to the house quickly and walked around to the side of the house to start shoveling. It should be his punishment for probably making Nikita worse.
