The water just simply couldn’t be hot enough. Nikita was putting her shoulder right there so the hot water hit her back and shoulder and first, but it did not seem to be enough.

Nikita leaned her head forward and felt tears rolling down her face, but she wasn’t sure why she was crying. She didn’t think she had that much pain, but she still couldn’t stop this emotional reaction that she was having.

And she didn’t have time.

“Kita?” Michael tapped at the door and Nikita lifted her head. “I’m fine.”

“I just wanted you to know that I got a couple heating pads warming up… I thought that they could help you,” Michael spoke as he didn’t push the bathroom door open.

Michael paced in the bedroom as he prayed that he did not have to go into the bathroom after Nikita. He knew that he did not have the strength to physically take her back to their room. He knew that it was just lunchtime, but he hoped that Nikita would just go to sleep now.

He jumped when Nikita pushed the door open, dressed in extra baggy pajamas and her hair still dripping. Nikita looked at Michael with tired eyes. “I couldn’t… I just couldn’t lift…”

Michael knew instantly that Nikita was saying that she couldn’t lift her arms up enough to dry her hair. Michael took the towel out of Nikita’s hands and motioned her to the desk chair. “Sit.”

“You are healing…”

“I’m fine,” Michael countered as he wasn’t about to listen to a weak protest like that. It was clear that Nikita trusted him to be speaking the truth, or she was just that tired, Nikita sat down.

Michael started with the towel, drying Nikita’s hair carefully. He took a long time before he pulled out the wide-tooth comb and started to pull it through the blonde hair that had tangled up. He heard Nikita hiss as her head moved with the pressure that he had to use to get the knots out. “I’m sorry, Kita.”

She didn’t respond.

Michael continued to move and almost fifteen minutes later her hair was perfectly ready to dry some more. Michael went to the bathroom and retrieved the hairdryer and he started to dry sections of her hair and then placed the dryer down. “You didn’t need to go to the lab for me.”

“I just faxed something,” Nikita replied with a soft voice.

Michael now moved his hands to her shoulders, but Nikita pulled away. “I hurt.”

“Maybe I can massage.”

“No,” Nikita sat up on the chair. “I hurt.”

“Maybe Ellie should look.”

“No,” Nikita shook her head slightly from side to side. “You are getting better… and that is all that we can handle right now.”

“It’s ok not to be 100%.”

“I haven’t been that for a long time,” Nikita rasped as she stood up and looked at the bed and the heating pads that Michael had started. “I have to go back to the lab later.”

“What?” Michael questioned as he shook his head from side to side. “You don’t need to do anything.”

“I started a test,” Nikita admitted as she sat down on the bed. “Nat needs it today.”

Nikita looked up at Michael. “Thank you for taking care of me… you didn’t need to do that.”

“I had to do that,” Michael protested as he shook his head from side to side as he turned the chair around to face it towards Nikita. He sat down as she pulled a heating pad up from the bed and placed it up and over her right shoulder. “We are helping each other out…. That means taking care of each other.”

“You didn’t sign up for any of this,” Nikita shook her head as she swallowed hard and leaned her head back against the wall. She wasn’t going to go to sleep either.

“Kita… rest…”
“I’m fine with just this,” Nikita’s eyes did not look at Michael’s. He rubbed his hands together and then left the room because he was so angry that he was liable to say something that he would regret later.
