“Hey… I didn’t know that you were coming home for lunch,” Davenport spoke as Ellie walked into the kitchen. He wrapped his arms around her and kissed her gently. She returned the kiss but it was short and he pulled away. “What’s wrong?”
Ellie shook her head. “Nothing wrong… just been busy making up for those missed appointments.”
“You shouldn’t have stayed here that extra day…. It wasn’t like we haven’t had Rhoda and Helen around the house,” Davenport pointed out and Ellie half smiled. “I know.”
“And you checked on Nikita before you left… and Rhoda stopped over before she went into the clinic,” Davenport reported as he kept his hands around Ellie. “Maybe soon you’ll be coming home at lunch for me.”
“You’d have to be home,” Ellie commented and Davenport chuckled. “I have a bit of a flexible schedule.”
“Not helping out Whitney while Nikita is out sick?” Ellie questioned and Davenport rolled his eyes. “Can I tell you the truth?”
“You are happy to have put the camera down?” Ellie inquired as she pulled away from Davenport. She moved to the refrigerator and grabbed a bottle of water. She twisted the cap off as Davenport was laughing. “Are you thinking of a real job yet?”
Davenport laughed again as he walked around Ellie and pushed her away from the refrigerator. “I’m sort of on the beckon call of Michael and Nikita… you know… doing spyish kind of things… security…”
“So basically you are doing nothing,” Ellie raised an eyebrow. Davenport pulled out a huge salad bowl and shook his head. “I don’t think having lunch ready is just nothing… but it is kind of nice.”
Davenport grabbed two plates as he walked to the table. “Look… I know that at some point they are going to need help with finding their daughter… I want to be able to provide that for them… plus, I’m running a security firm… It just happens that I can run it from here without a formal office… thanks to Jason and others.”
Ellie snagged two forks and sat down as Michael walked into the kitchen. “Hi, Michael.”
“Hi,” Michael spoke as he continued to the counter to retrieve a cup of coffee. He leaned against the counter as Davenport started to give Ellie some salad. Ellie exhaled and turned her head to look over at Michael. “It’s natural for her to have to sleep, Michael. I don’t think she has ever truly given herself a break. All of this sleep can be a really good sign.”
Michael took a sip of the coffee and cleared his throat. “I wasn’t questioning that.”
“She didn’t get worse, right?” Ellie asked as she turned slightly. Davenport grunted. “He has been moody all day. Nikita told him to get out of the house.”
“She didn’t tell me to leave…” Michael protested with a swing of his head. Davenport rolled his eyes. “I know that she wasn’t trying to kick you out of your own house… but she was trying to tell you to take a break from caring for her… to get out into the world with others… and I think I agree with her!”
Michael hadn’t told anyone about the conversations he had with Nikita. Especially not that first one as he knew the reaction everyone would have with just the mentioning of the names Madeline and Adrian. They really thought that she was still not talking a lot, but that wasn’t the case. Nikita had told him all the things that she had thought about when he was sick and how many times Elena had come to her thoughts.
It was among the reasons why Michael was no ready to leave.
“I think you should get out of the house for a bit… because you need to get out first so that you can start to show Nikita that she is better enough to go with you,” Ellie spoke as she finished swallowing some of her salad. Michael blinked his eyes and Ellie laughed. “She is going to have to be pulled out of that bed… and you are going to have to do that… she is well enough to take a long bath… to go to a movie with you… but she isn’t going to even think of those things until you have left the house. It will show to Nikita that you believe that she is better if you leave.”
Michael hadn’t thought of it in that way. He also had some things that he really had to do. It wasn’t work. But he had a message from Tom that they needed to speak. Michael could only assume that maybe he had an idea to help Nikita with these memories. He also wanted to get Nikita something. He wasn’t sure what, but something.
“She is really ready to leave the house?” Michael asked and Ellie nodded her head. “Yeah… and I think it would do the both of you a lot of good.”
Michael placed the coffee into the sink and left the kitchen. Ellie started to eat her lunch and Davenport cleared his throat. “What was all of that about?”
“What?” Ellie inquired and Davenport tilted his head. “You know something more than I do.”
“I’m the doctor.”
“It isn’t a doctor thing,” Davenport shook his head and Ellie placed her fork down with a heavy sigh. “I think we don’t know a lot of what goes on in that room… and that’s for the best.”
“The best?”
“Some things are meant to be between a husband and a wife.”
“They surely aren’t married…. Not even engaged,” Davenport pointed his fork at Ellie. She rolled her eyes as she picked up her own fork again, knowing that this was all taking time away from her scant lunch hour. “They are in their hearts…. And I think it’s for the best that some things are just between them.”
