Rhoda reached out and touched Nikita’s shoulder. Nikita jumped and then pulled her reaction in as she turned. “Rhoda… I didn’t know how to tell you…”
“I’m amazed by you,” Rhoda spoke as she looked at Nikita and motioned for her to sit back down. Michael, Nat and Tom had moved somewhere else and Nikita had continued to be quiet. “I think I’m starting to understand why you have been acting this way.”
Nikita shrugged her shoulders. She wasn’t sure if it was just the things that happened since she took control of Section. Nikita opened her mouth but she didn’t have the words. Rhoda sat there and squeezed Nikita’s hands. “It explains a lot of the PTSD.”
“PTSD wasn’t allowed in Section,” Nikita spoke as she pulled her hand away from Rhoda. “You have to understand, they would have cancelled me.”
Rhoda didn’t need to confirm that cancel meant that they would have killed Nikita. Tom hadn’t said that Section was ruthless, but it was easy to see that they didn’t follow normal rules. Nikita turned her head to the side and then back to Rhoda. “I was remembering when I first met Michael.”
“So you met inside of Section?”
Nikita nodded her head up and down. She tilted her head to the side. “He was the first person I met. My trainer.”
Rhoda blinked her eyes and Nikita shook her head slightly. “Don’t think it was some sort of Stockholm syndrome… it wasn’t like that at all.”
“What did a trainer do?” Rhoda inquired. Nikita swallowed and didn’t speak about how he told her that she was guilty of the crimes that led her to get into jail. It would just destroy Rhoda more to know that part of Nikita’s truth. “He informed me that to the world that I was dead. He showed me a picture of my ill-attended funeral and told me where my burial plot was.”
“And then he trained you?”
“In most things,” Nikita nodded her head. “Hand to hand combat, munitions, deception, and communications. I got further gun training and gadget training from Walter,” Nikita explained as she looked down to the carpet. “Jason’s brother, Birkoff… he trained me in computers… and Michael was a teacher of many things and those things that he didn’t, he turned me over to others… I was taught about fashion, etiquette, flirting… and other things…”
“And somehow you fell in love?” Rhoda asked and Nikita nodded her head up and down. “We have a daughter out there, Rhoda. Michael didn’t even know about her… I had gotten him out first… with Adam…”
“A child that Section made him have?” Rhoda’s voice cracked as her eyes filled with tears. Nikita jerked her head up and down. “I’ll understand if you want to distance yourself…”
“You love that boy like he is yours,” Rhoda pointed out as she wiped at her tears.
“He is part of Michael,” Nikita clearly spoke as she did not have any doubt why she cared for Adam. Nikita sat back and leaned against the couch. She was tired and she just wanted to take Michael upstairs to bed right now.
“So… when you were being the angel…”
Nikita pressed her lips together and shook her head. “I’m not doing that.”
“You promised Nat, I know,” Rhoda spoke up as she crossed her legs. “But you were trying to make up for things you felt guilty about.”
Nikita didn’t respond, but her eyes flickered up to look at Rhoda before retreating to look over at the television. Rhoda thought for a while and she leaned forward. “Your daughter?”
Nikita shook her head. “Not talking about her till next year,” Nikita quickly answered as she stood up. She walked to the window and looked out. She could see Michael, Nat and Tom talking. Nat seemed less confused and concerned as he had earlier in the living room when he finally had shouted about how it was ridiculous. He then had hundreds of questions which Michael and Tom had patiently answered. Both of them had spoke for Nikita as she couldn’t answer the questions that Nat had.
Rhoda could see that right now, Nikita was away from her and it was a defensive move. Rhoda had questions, but it was more about how Nikita had managed to do all that she had done and still be here today, functioning at all. Rhoda doubted that she could have done that.
But Nikita was also tired and she was staring out at Michael. It was time for Michael to be by Nikita. But Nikita wasn’t going to ask for it. Rhoda stepped out of the room and outside, telling Nat that it was time to go. She looked back towards the window and nodded her head towards Nikita, letting her know that Michael would be with her shortly.
