Nikita pulled a light chenille blanket over her legs as she looked at the television. She had been up really early to start baking and now she was chilling. There was a sound and Nikita saw Adam creeping into the room. “I didn’t know you were awake.”

Nikita shook her head to the right and indicated for Adam to sit down. She waited for him and gave him some of the blanket. Adam got under and sighed. “Walter doesn’t like how I cut celery so he kicked me out.”

Nikita chuckled and rolled her shoulders back. She glanced at the television and Adam slapped his hands together. “So, have you seen the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade before?”

“There?” Nikita asked and Adam shook his head. “No… on television. I know that you wouldn’t go there… too many people.”

Nikita nodded her head. There were two different types of operatives. There were some operatives that liked the crowds and the hoards of people. They felt safer in those crowds and they would migrate towards something like that parade route just because there was a crowd. There were other operatives, much like herself, that did not like the crowds. It was safer with less people around and it made it easier to identify threats versus innocents. It wasn’t that Nikita would go away from a crowd, but it was something that she wouldn’t willing go out of her way to go to.

She realized that her thoughts had gotten away from her and that Adam had asked a question. “I saw it once.”

“When?” Adam asked as he got closer to Nikita and took more of the blanket. Nikita looked at Adam and knew that this was ok. “I was on a mission with your father over Thanksgiving. He told me that we had the day off… so we watched the parade and then we ate pizza most of the day.”

“He used to watch it with me all the time,” Adam smiled as he groaned. “But we both can’t stand all the musical stuff at the beginning. Get to the beginning of the parade and to the balloons.”

“The year I saw it, the wind was really bad,” Nikita commented with some caution. Adam clapped his hands together. “I think it’s great when the handlers have to work hard. I know that they are volunteer Macy’s workers and all… but still, to watch them fighting a balloon, it’s so funny!”

Nikita laughed with Adam for some time. They paused to watch the kick off of the parade and Nikita was surprised with how close Adam was getting to her. “I wonder where your father is.”

“I bet you that he is upstairs watching the parade himself. He started to act like it was a childish thing two years ago… but I caught him watching it last year,” Adam spoke as he moved his feet around. “Boy, Walter is cooking so he has the heat off in the house… its cold in here.”

“It’s a bit chilly,” Nikita concurred as she nodded her head up and down. She looked at Adam and turned towards him. “Adam… I’ve never had a real Thanksgiving dinner. I’ve heard about it. I know the social norms that they taught me in Section…”

“You’ve never had turkey and stuffing until you are so full that you have to unbutton your pants?” Adam questioned as he blinked his eyes. Nikita nodded her head up and down. “Is it just stuffing and turkey? I mean, I made desserts that the websites said were traditional desserts for Thanksgiving.”

“Oh, there is so much more than stuffing and turkey. My favorite is the gravy that goes over it all. Walter better make it thick like my dad does because I love it dripping in my mashed potatoes… and I was trying to help Walter with the stuffed celery when he kicked me out,” Adam rattled off as his green eyes grew bright and happy. “Do you know what stuffed celery is?”

“With peanut butter?” Nikita questioned and Adam chortled with glee. “Oh no… not on Thanksgiving. Luckily Walter makes it the way I like it. Some people just stuff it with cream cheese, but that is so boring. We mix it with blue cheese and cream cheese and we pile it high… There is so much cheese in that celery that you almost lose where the celery is.”

Nikita rubbed her hands together. “Turkey, stuffing, potatoes… and stuffed celery.”

“Oh, I saw Walter’s menu and there is so much more!” Adam declared as he leaned in closer to Nikita. “He is going to start making homemade cranberry sauce and he is making deviled eggs. I always thought of that as being an Easter dish, but nothing wrong with deviled eggs. He is making sweet potatoes two ways too!”

Nikita blinked her eyes. “Two ways?”

“Yeah,” Adam licked his lips. “He is making it with marshmallow topping, which will be what I eat, but I think he is making a healthy version with pineapples and apple… I don’t get it, but that’s Walter.”

“That’s a lot of food,” Nikita stated and Adam laughed. “I wasn’t done.”

“You weren’t?”

“No,” Adam swung his head from side to side. “There is a green bean casserole, corn, cornbread, macaroni and cheese, and even creamed spinach. I won’t touch the creamed spinach. I don’t really like spinach at all.”

Nikita blinked her eyes and turned her attention back to the parade. There was a lot of food and it seemed like it was way too much. She waited and Adam exclaimed as he pointed to the television, “Balloon damage!”

Nikita chuckled as she nodded her head. The poor head of the balloon was half deflated and it was going to be hard for it to make it all the way to the end. “It’s kind of sad.”

“Oh, it’s not sad!” Adam declared as he clapped his hands together. “Maybe there will be more!”
