Michael tilted his head as he turned up the sidewalk and saw shipping boxes on the porch. Not just one or two. But lots of them. He had gotten all of the things that he was doing for various authorities shipped to the new location of his lab, so he didn’t know what any of these were for and why they were still out on the porch.

Michael even had to pick a few up and put them on top of each other so he could open the door. That was when he looked at the name and saw that there were variations of the name Josephine Joseph, Josephine Samuels, Samantha Joseph and finally N. Jones.

“Nikita?” Michael called out as he got into the house and actually put two boxes down on the entryway table. He was early coming home, not feeling like getting too involved in any one project right now. He walked down the hallway as the door slapped shut. “Nikita?”

Michael had noted that she had been in a great mood since Thanksgiving. After dinner they had played games like Charades. For some reason, Nikita and Mick when partnered up in Charades were really good. Mick had guessed “What’s New Pussycat?” with Nikita just licking the back of her hand. There was a story there that Michael wasn’t sure he wanted to know.

It was as Michael was remembering about Thanksgiving that was just over ten days ago that Michael then realized what the packages were. Ellie, Daisy and Rhoda had all suggested that Nikita get up with them on Friday morning to go shopping. They tried to show her the great deals that were available at the stores, but Nikita didn’t budge in her decision not to go shopping. They even suggested that she come out with them later in the afternoon when the crowds weren’t so heavy but Nikita stayed the course and stayed home.

In fact, except for the walks and the couple times that Nikita came over to the lab, Michael wasn’t sure when Nikita had left the house – or if she had at all left the house.

Michael turned and saw Nikita at the computer, flipping through some pictures. “Ah… there are some packages here… on the porch.”

Nikita turned and smiled. “That’s great!”

“Ah… there is a lot,” Michael commented as Nikita stood up. She nodded her head. “Yeah… I had to do all of my shopping.”

“It would have been cheaper to go to the store, Kita,” Michael pointed out and Nikita laughed. “You’re silly! I got free shipping.”

Michael held the door open as Nikita started to move the boxes. She even stopped at one point to tell Michael that he wasn’t allowed to open any of them. He frowned and waited and then got to see that the living room looked to be filled with packages. “Kita… I got Adam that new game system he wanted.”

“That’s from you,” Nikita shrugged her shoulders and she grinned. “And I didn’t get him anything you got him.”

“How can you be so sure?”

“I know,” Nikita laughed as she turned in a circle. Michael moved forward and caught her body. “Kita… I know that the hardest thing for me to get used to was going out in public… the stores were scary places. I had to do it for Adam, but I avoided big malls for a long time. Concerts were the same. And when Adam was that young… he wanted to go to some crazy kid’s ice show in the arena that was overwhelming to me… but you have to start getting out of the house.”

“I’ve been out of the house,” Nikita replied as she moved back to the dining room. She opened up a folder and started to show the display show of pictures. “Davenport said that he isn’t seeing our fair Ellie… but I got the proof today.”

“That isn’t getting out of the house!” Michael stepped forward and stopped the show. “And we didn’t need pictures to know.”

“I just don’t care for the lies about why he isn’t here,” Nikita spoke up as she folded her arms across her chest.

“It’s not the same… you need to get out… you have to start small…” Michael explained and Nikita tilted her head to the side. “I’m going out tonight… Whitney has gotten me a side job.”

“A side job? You don’t have any job right now,” Michael pointed out and Nikita groaned. “Michael… I’m going to be taking photographs at a holiday school production or something… it’s her primary job to photography but Davenport hasn’t responded to her calls for additional help… so I’m going to give it a try.”

“So you finally are going out… but as job in front of people?” Michael shook his head. “Kita…”

“I’m fine with crowds,” Nikita declared as she continued to stand there. “I just don’t understand why I have to shop in a crowd when I can get everything I need online. And if I didn’t find what I wanted, then I would have gone out to the stores.”

“So we can go shopping on Saturday together,” Michael challenged and Nikita shook her head slightly. Michael tilted his head as if he was making a point. However, Nikita just laughed. “I can’t go not because I don’t want to… I can’t go because I did accept an offer from Davenport to help him take photographs at a wedding. But I can’t tell Whitney that because she probably would be upset that Davenport was talking to me and not her.”

Michael rubbed his forehead and then leaned against the doorframe. “When were you going to tell me?”

“Today,” Nikita snickered. “When you came in. I just accepted Davenport’s offer at lunch.”

Michael stood there and then stepped forward. He kissed Nikita tenderly and Nikita wrapped her arms around him. “I was going to tell you…”

“I worry about you,” Michael admitted and Nikita nodded her head against Michael’s body. She didn’t need him to say it to know it. “And I’m happy for you. I think if Whitney and Davenport want you to do this that means you are good.”

Nikita brushed off that statement as she held his hand. “I wish the packages didn’t show up…”

“Really?” Michael tilted his head to the side. He watched as Nikita nodded her head up and down. “I have to get the boxes put away before Adam comes home… and I would much rather be doing something else…”
