“I told you… weddings are easy,” Davenport spoke as he opened the door and then paused to kick off his boots as they had tracked in a bit of snow from what had dusted the roads and sidewalks during the wedding reception. Nikita walked in and kicked off her ballet flats and shrugged out of her coat. “I didn’t think… I’d be so drained.”

Davenport placed his bag down and shook his head as he looked into the living room. “I thought I said I would see you tomorrow morning.”

“Michael wanted some company, “ Ellie replied as she smiled back at Davenport. Nikita looked into the living room and immediately went into Michael’s arms. “Tired?”

“Yeah,” Nikita nodded her head as she settled on Michael’s lap. “But oddly… energized.”

“No way,” Davenport shook his head. “I swear that she was falling asleep in the car.”

“That was different,” Nikita protested as she hooked her arm around Michael’s shoulders and looked at him. “Now that I’m home with you.”

“Your eyes are twinkling,” Michael whispered to Nikita as he looked at her. Nikita nodded her head. “I was worried about taking wedding photos… I mean, weddings are emotional…. But not this one… it was a bit of a freak show.”

“A freak show?” Michael questioned and Nikita nodded her head. “The bride is some sort of circus act… I don’t get it exactly, but they had all kinds there… and it was sort of a dress up party.”

Michael tilted his head. “Did you know this?”

“I didn’t believe Davenport,” Nikita shook her head as she rolled her shoulders back. “I’m sore.”

“Are you?” Michael teased as he kissed Nikita’s lips. “Are you hinting at something?”

“Maybe I’m hoping?” Nikita inquired and Michael stood up. “Ok… I will give you a massage… I should take you to your room.”

“Michael!” Nikita exclaimed as she playfully slapped Michael. They joked about the room that they called hers all the time, but she never stayed in that room. Michael turned and looked at Davenport. “If she isn’t leaving… lock up… if she does leave… lock up.”

Davenport waited and as Michael disappeared upstairs, Davenport groaned as he leaned back. “I don’t know how Nikita kept up… that wedding was insane.”

“Maybe you are out of practice?” Ellie shrugged her shoulders slightly. Davenport looked at Ellie and shrugged his shoulders. “Maybe I don’t like being a photographer.”

“Now, how could that be?” Ellie sarcastically spoke as everyone had figured this out a while ago. Davenport stared at her and then looked up at the ceiling. “But Nikita wouldn’t be ready for a romantic wedding… during the ceremony… you could see that she was worried.”

“Why would she be worried about romance?”

“Romance didn’t exist inside of Section.”

“Ah, she fell in love with Michael,” Ellie pointed out and Davenport shook his head slightly. “But that was love… but not romance. They had tender moments, but I don’t think sneaking into a closet during a mission for some loving was romantic at all.”

Ellie crossed her arms and shook her head. “You don’t need to be crude about it.”

“I’m being real about it,” Davenport replied back as he shifted to face Ellie. “Someday, if Nikita continues this, she’ll run into a bride who talks about how she is getting married first and then going to have a family… a baby… and she will be gushing about how this is the right thing to do and the right order… and I don’t think that Nikita is ready to face that day.”

Ellie was quiet for a long time. She reached out and touched Davenport’s arms. “Maybe you feel that way sometimes.”

“Yeah,” Davenport nodded his head as he rubbed his neck. “I was married, Ellie. Before I was in Section.”

The room was silent as Ellie pulled away slightly. “Oh.”

“We were high school sweethearts… I was the start linebacker on the football team and she was the prettiest cheerleader… at least she was to me,” Davenport explained as he looked across the room. He cleared his throat. “We got married on a lark… we wanted to get student housing together in the dorms… so we ran off to Reno and got married.”

“Why didn’t you go back to her?”

“That was over a decade ago,” Davenport snorted. He wasn’t going to say anything more, but he saw Ellie staring at him. “Nikita found her… she had been able to prove that I was not guilty for the crimes that they said I did… she got a huge settlement from the state… she put that into a scholarship fund for football players… not that I ever got to play any college ball…”

“And?” Ellie inquired and Davenport rubbed a hand across his face before focusing right on Ellie. “She got married four years later… she has three kids and I couldn’t go back to that… back to what? We were high school sweethearts… we probably wouldn’t have made it out of college married…”

Ellie got closer to him and then hugged him. “Thank you for telling me.”

“I have skeletons in my closet too… cold operatives have the most, Ellie.”

“I’m not going anywhere,” Ellie replied firmly as she kept holding onto him.
