Rhoda looked around the clinic and the mass of supplies that had just showed up. It was a shipment of supplies that they were running low on and it was a gift that they sorely needed. Plus there were packages that were labeled as “Newborn Mother Care Packages” that even included car seats for newborns. It had been a dream of the clinic to provide such items and now there were too many items.

“Rhoda… there is a construction crew here,” Dr. Honor Jacobs gushed as she shook her head from side to side. “It’s like Extreme Makeover without Ty.”

“An early Christmas gift,” Rhoda nodded her head up and down as she smiled to the doctor who had given so much of herself to this clinic. “But you still have patients…”

“Do you know something about this?” Dr. Jacobs inquired and Rhoda shook her head. She didn’t know for sure, but she had some might strong suspicions.

“We used to get some things when the angel was around… and when she disappeared… things dropped off for a while… along with the free press we would get… and this… this is what we needed,” Dr. Jacobs explained as she picked up a chart. “I don’t care how it happened… but I know that I’m blessed.”

“I’m going to go out to the construction crew and introduce myself,” Rhoda spoke as she looked at the doctor before she called someone else back to the examination room. Rhoda pulled on a coat and walked outside, seeing lots of workers around. She saw drawings and it was clear that there was expansion plans. Rhoda introduced herself around and got to know a lot of the players.

Then out of the corner of her eyes, dropping a bag of supplies to the ground, Rhoda saw the blonde hair hidden away. But she knew who it was. Rhoda walked up and stood there and waited for Nikita to stand up. She turned and nodded her head. “Hi Rhoda.”

“How did you know… it was me…”

“The same way I knew what was needed,” Nikita shrugged her shoulders. “And I needed to get out of the house some… thought that this was a good idea.”

“Nikita,” Rhoda whispered and Nikita looked to the floor. “Don’t thank me… it wasn’t just me.”

“It wouldn’t have happened if you didn’t start something,” Rhoda pointed out and Nikita looked away. Nikita rubbed her hands together. “We have a station with coffee and tea… do you have a moment to talk?”

Rhoda nodded her head as she moved with the young woman. Nikita took a cup and handed it to Rhoda. “Adam wants me to go to a school event this week.”

“That’s great,” Rhoda spoke as she poured herself coffee. She noticed that Nikita had stopped moving and she looked at her. “Right?”

“I can’t go,” Nikita shook her head slightly as she finally poured herself some tea. Nikita motioned to the small empty table and sat down. “I can’t be around the other children… they make me think.”

“You are wonderful around children,” Rhoda pointed out as she placed her coffee down on the table. “I remember about the girl that you showed how to tie her shoes… you didn’t talk to her… but she was tying her shoes in moments…”

Nikita shrugged her shoulders and sipped at her tea. “Rhoda… it’s hard to think about a school.”

“Your daughter might not even be in school yet… she would be, five or six, right?”

“Six,” Nikita spoke as she rubbed her neck. “She would be in school.”

“But not near here,” Rhoda pointed out gently as she looked at Nikita. “I know that you know that she isn’t near here. I know you… you have to know that she isn’t in the same school as Adam.”

“There are no adopted children enrolled in Adam’s school,” Nikita replied as she nodded her head up and down.

“Then you have to go,” Rhoda shook her head as she didn’t see any reason for Nikita not to go. “Didn’t you say that Adam asked you?”

“Yes,” Nikita rasped and Rhoda shrugged her shoulders. “You have to do this for Adam. He does look up at you… you are going to be his parent.”

“I’m not replacing his mother!”

“I didn’t say that,” Rhoda reached out and patted Nikita’s hand. “But you are taking a motherly role in his life. To deny that is going to be a great injustice to yourself and to Adam.”

Nikita took a gulp of her tea and mulled over Rhoda’s words. Rhoda sighed and pulled her hand back so she could take some of her own coffee. Yet, Nikita still didn’t talk. “Nikita, Adam is growing up so fast and even without you there, he got to know a lot about you and in ways took on some of your traits because Michael taught him about you… and who you were as a person… that’s the biggest compliment anyone could have.”

Nikita choked slightly and she coughed. With shaky hands, Nikita pushed them to her lap. “Michael said that Adam didn’t invite him last year… Michael has to be upset that Adam asked me.”

“Did he say that he was?”

“He didn’t have too,” Nikita stressed and Rhoda shook her head. “He probably stressed it as a way to show you how great it is that Adam has bonded to you already. I’m sure that his is proud of his son inviting you.”

Nikita thought about it and gulped some more tea. “Michael already explained to Adam… that it would be hard for me to go.”

“Then surprise them both,” Rhoda shrugged her shoulders. Nikita licked her lips and she nodded her head slightly. “I’ll think about it.”

“Is it for Friday?”

“No, it’s tomorrow,” Nikita replied and Rhoda stood up. “Well, get some hard manual labor in today… work hard to help these construction guys out… get all of your anxieties out today doing work… showing these guys how to actual do something… and you’ll be ready to face tomorrow.”

Nikita watched as Rhoda slipped away and back into the clinic. Nikita wasn’t sure what she was expecting to hear, but she wasn’t sure if she could still accept this advice. She worried that she would get struck with some sort of PTSD flash in the middle of the pageant and embarrass Adam. She worried that it would get out that she took Adam out of school when he was sick under false pretenses that she was Mrs. Pomeroy. She was worried that she would say something to one of Adam’s teachers that would make them hate her.

Tossing her cup away, Nikita went back to the supply truck and started to move the supplies again. It felt good to be working hard like this. Her muscles were screaming with use, but it still felt good. Nikita moved as she continued to think and toss around all the pros and cons. It was going to be a long day and she hoped that by the end of it she would have an answer.
