The night used to calm her body down. But that was not doing the trick tonight. The sky was murky and not many stars were visible on this night. There was snow on the ground, but without a moon, it was still dark.

Her mind was in turmoil. In many ways her mind just wanted her to go to bed and to give up this task that she was taking on as her own. She had no duty to do this and part of her sane mind told her to run away from this, that she wasn’t going to be able to keep her emotions in check.

But could she live with the guilt if she walked away?

“You forgot your coat,” Michael spoke as he pressed the heavy parka around her body. She knew that he was there. It wasn’t a surprise when he pressed the material against her. She didn’t feel cold until the parka wrapped her up. “Walter is almost here.”

“I can’t talk to Lisa,” Nikita spoke as she didn’t look at Michael. He wasn’t going to leave either. He had concerns about this and about her. She couldn’t put Michael’s concern to rest. She wasn’t sure if she could do this, but she was going to try.

“You know that you will get the best responses from her,” Michael gave the response that Nikita had already calculated would come out of his mouth. It was the truth. She was a grieving mother and she wasn’t going to respond to Michael’s charm. She was going to give Nikita the best response. “Walter will be with you.”

“He isn’t you,” Nikita replied as she finally turned to look at Michael. “I know that she isn’t ours.”

“Right now you know that,” Michael spoke with a dull voice that only told Nikita how much it was clear that he was concerned about her. Nikita looked at Michael’s face and then nodded her head. “I’m afraid of what will happen, Michael. I don’t have power over the PTSD…”

Michael took Nikita’s hands into his hand held them for a long time. “Your training will get you through this. If you were able to survive what you did in Section while you were pregnant… you can do this, Kita.”

“And fall apart afterwards,” Nikita stated as she looked down to her hands. Nikita took a deep breath as a car was pulling up close. “That must be Walter.”

“Lisa is waiting for the two of you,” Michael confirmed as he continued to hold onto Nikita’s hands. “Nat had been communicating with Lisa on paper… he had thought about the house being bugged.”

Nikita blinked her eyes. “There is something we are missing, Michael.”

“We’ll figure it out,” Michael replied as Walter opened up the car door and stood outside the car. “You’ll figure this out.”

“And get Veronica home safe,” Nikita rasped and Michael nodded his head. Nikita turned to move but she stopped. She moved to Michael and kissed his lips, feeling his arms around her. She held onto that strength and knew that she had to feel that way when she got to that house.
