The house was a small house and Nikita walked up the stairs with Walter standing there with a bag of things out. He was already scanning and Nikita pulled out the white board and knocked at the door. Rhoda opened the door and Nikita nodded her head.

Nikita wrote the words “Hello. We are here to help,” on the board and followed Rhoda into the living room. There was a boy about Adam’s age sleeping on the couch and a woman sitting on the chair, rocking back and forth. Nikita had already seen her picture from the police files and could see that the years of being a widow had worn on her. Nikita held the board up as Walter pulled the device out of his bag and started to plug it in.

“Ok to talk,” Walter spoke up in just a few minutes and Nikita placed the board down. “My name is Nikita. After we get your daughter back… you should forget about us.”

Lisa looked at Rhoda and shook her head. “I don’t understand why anyone would bug the house… and why… why now…”

“They needed to make sure that you didn’t call the police,” Nikita responded as she settled on the floor and looked at Lisa. “You should take your son upstairs and let us take care of things.”

“What is that thing?” Lisa questioned as she looked at the box. She wasn’t going to go to bed. Nikita looked over to Walter as he lifted up his whole hand, indicating that he thought that there was at least five listening devices in the house. “What is that box?”

“It’s a jamming device, Darling,” Walter answered as he pulled out a scanner to start tracking down were the bugs were. “It’s been modified to help us track where they are listening from too.”

Lisa blinked. “That can be done? I haven’t heard of anything like this… it’s not like television…”

“This isn’t the cop shows on television,” Nikita whispered gently and Walter rolled his eyes. “And we surely aren’t the cops.”

“Nat said someone specialized… I thought FBI… or something…” Lisa stammered and Nikita shook her head. “It’s best that you don’t think about where we are from. Just know that we are going to help you.”

Walter eased out of the room and Nikita looked around and finally sat down on the coffee table next to the jamming device. “Can you tell me anything about the men that carjacked you?”

“My girl… my baby…” Lisa started to cry as she shook her head slightly. “She was so scared… screaming…”

Nikita rubbed her hands together as she leaned forward to grasp Lisa’s knees. “I know that you are worried about your daughter.”

“Veronica,” Lisa snapped. “Her name is Veronica.”

“I know that you are worried about Veronica,” Nikita spoke slowly. She waited as Lisa nodded her head while drying her eyes again. “But any details you can give me about the men… Did they wear hoods? What kind of guns it looked like they had? How many? Did they were gloves?”

Lisa nodded her head. “Masks… but not knit… those neoprene kind of masks… covered their whole head… and there were so many of them… they seemed to be multiplying…” Lisa started to explain and she broke into tears again. Nikita waited and swallowed hard. “Lisa… I need you to focus and give me the details.”

“Focus? My daughter has been taken! I can’t focus!” Lisa fired back as she pulled away from Nikita. “You can’t know how I feel!”

“Lisa, she is trying to help you,” Rhoda spoke from the doorway. Nikita shook her head and told Rhoda to back off with that movement. Nikita had this under control right now.

“What? How? Do you have a daughter?” Lisa questioned as she looked back at Nikita. Nikita tensed and swallowed had. “Yes, I have a daughter.”

“So you have to know how hard it hurts a mother to know that their child is out there… hurt… and how a mother should have protected that child!” Lisa cajoled Nikita. Nikita stood up and walked to the fireplace. She blinked back her own tears at the thoughts that Lisa had brought up.

But this wasn’t about her.

“I have a daughter,” Nikita spoke as she turned her attention back to Lisa who was observing her every movement. “But I haven’t been a mother to her. I don’t know what that pain is that you are speaking about because she has another mother.”

Nikita moved back as her words were catching Lisa in shock. “But I can tell you that I’m damn good in what I do and I don’t fail.”

Lisa rubbed her elbows and exhaled with shaking taking over her body. “I just don’t know… I mean… those shows always show that when the parents listen to the kidnappers and don’t go to the police… that’s bad.”

Nikita squatted down again and looked directly at Lisa. “We already have proof that someone from inside the police department is involved, Lisa. That would be the wrong thing to do right now. Plus, Walter has found bugs. Police are bad.”

“Then how are you going to help?” Lisa questioned and Nikita waited for a moment. “We aren’t the police. We don’t have the follow the rules. And we’ll get Veronica back.”

Nikita settled back down and then started to get Lisa to talk again. Nikita took in the details as her mind still tried to process what was being said. Some things added up and other things didn’t add up. Nikita helped Lisa to stand up and they were moving to the den when Nikita noticed the son still sleeping on the couch. “His name is Ben, correct?”

“Yes,” Lisa replied as she felt Rhoda wrapping her arm around her. “He wasn’t home from school yet… he had detention…”

“Is that common?” Nikita inquired as she walked with Lisa and Rhoda as Walter came down the stairs with a bag in his hand. He nodded his head and Nikita continued down the hallway, but looked back at Ben. Her mind was starting to click and she listened to Lisa explain that it was only have late that Ben started to get into trouble at school.

Excusing herself, Nikita walked back to Walter and looked both ways in the hallway. “Did Jason try to locate the car yet?”

“It’s brand new and has one of those theft-tracking devices… but it isn’t operational,” Walter answered and Nikita looked at Ben. She didn’t think Ben had a clue about what had happened, but something seemed to tell her that he may have been manipulated into giving information to someone that he thought he could trust and could have followed the lead to get into trouble. It was much easier to kidnap one little girl than a boy that was almost a teenager. “I need to talk to Michael.”

Walter closed in and Nikita could see that he was worried about her. Nikita shook her head. “The PTSD isn’t the issue Walter… I just need to talk a thought out…”
