Michael rubbed the back of Nikita’s neck as he still held her. He wasn’t sure how long they had been there, but it had to be a significant amount of time. Her body was still trembling and she was still crying. He hadn’t heard a word out of her for a long time, but Michael wasn’t sure if that was good or bad. He was shaken to his core again. He felt like he was out of his body from the moment that Nikita said that she wasn’t a human. It wasn’t that he never felt that way. He had felt that way often.
Troubling was this situation. Michael could see parts of Nikita’s plan on rescuing Veronica in his head but sitting here like this wasn’t going to get them there. But Michael knew that right now his attention wasn’t on Veronica. Nikita might hate him for that, but she was his priority and it would always remain that way.
“Hey, Michael… Nikita…” Walter spoke as he rounded the corner and then stopped. He saw Michael sitting there on the floor rubbing Nikita’s neck as she stayed deep against Michael’s body as if she was trying to cocoon herself from the world. Walter stopped and looked at Michael and whispered if Nikita was ok. Michael didn’t dare move a hair and he just looked at Walter. “Well… I wanted to let you both know that I spoke with Tom…”
Nikita jerked away from Michael but didn’t look up. “No… no… we are going to have to move… and Adam won’t get a dog…and I’ll be the reason for all of it…”
“Shh…” Michael whispered as he continued to rub at Nikita’s neck. He couldn’t believe Walter did that. Michael had thought about it but hadn’t made the call himself. Ultimately, he sat there while holding Nikita and saw the chance of keeping Tom out of it as something to risk.
“I made the decision that neither of you would do because you both are too emotionally attached to the situation… and it doesn’t mean that you have to move,” Walter declared firmly. Michael shook his head. “Walter… now isn’t the time.”
“I’m just working off of what I was told we were doing,” Walter defended himself and his actions. “If things have changed, which they look like they have since you two are on the floor, I haven’t been told of the changes.”
Nikita pushed away from Michael and kept her head down. She was taking deep breathes and Michael wasn’t sure what Nikita was going to do. When he had tried to touch her earlier she had managed to push him away pretty hard. Nikita could have done some damage if she really wanted too.
Nikita pressed her palm to her forehead and forced the tears away. She had to do that for now. Later she would have time to cry. Nikita slowly turned and then lifted her head to look at Walter. “I’m sorry that my PTSD derailed the initial plans but it made me realize serious flaws in my logic and my errors in planning on exposing Adam to this.”
Walter bit down hard on his teeth as he tried to hide his shock at Nikita’s appearance and her words. Her face was broken down and it did not match the force and power of the words that she had just said. “Sugar… I didn’t know… and I know that this is hard. Tom wanted us to slow down the clock so he could get some people in place and that’s probably for the best.”
“It isn’t,” Nikita shook her head from side to side. “We have to do this tonight.”
Michael exhaled as he stretched his back out and looked at Walter. “We wait they’ll be ready for a raid… the more time that passes the more likely that officials would get involved.”
Nikita pushed at her legs to stand up but crumbled right back down. She took a deep breath and slammed her hands against the floor. “I don’t have time for this and I’m over this for now.”
“Well, you might not want Adam involved… but…” Walter drifted off and he shrugged his shoulders as both Michael and Nikita glared at him. “Someone taught that boy to hack.”
Michael was quiet and Nikita shook her head. “No… Adam doesn’t get involved.”
“He knows Ben,” Walter stated sternly. It was that statement that made Nikita drop her head again. Michael reached out for her back and stroked it. She wanted to do this so badly, but to plan it; it was causing too much turmoil. “We go in tonight… Kita and I.”
Nikita shook her head. “Michael… I don’t remember the last time I worked with anyone… it’s too dangerous to go in with me… we haven’t been out in the field together…”
“We know each other,” Michael declared as he pulled at Nikita’s body to bring her against his body. “And you can’t plan this. You can’t even tell me what has you so scared and what you were remembering… so you aren’t in the position to plan this. I can do this.”
Nikita tried to pull away and protest. Walter stood there and didn’t say anything. Tom had suggested that Michael take point on this, not that it was a question of Nikita’s skill, but just because of the girl involved.
“I trained you… and we covered each other for years. It doesn’t matter that it has been years, Kita. I trust you out there. You are the only one that I would go out there with like this,” Michael whispered as he leaned his head down to her ear. “The only way I see this working is that I am there to cover you. Because your job is going to be once we get to Veronica, is protecting her.”
Nikita turned her head away and Michael looked at Walter. “I take it that Tom has some realization that this may get dirty.”
“Unofficially?” Walter questioned as he nodded his head up and down. “Things are in order, Michael.”
“We need some rest…”
“No,” Nikita pulled away as she shook her head. “We have to run down the floor plans… we aren’t even sure if the location is the right place. The bugs might be going somewhere and they are holding Veronica somewhere else… we need background information… and recon… and we can’t involve anyone else…”
“We are going to rest,” Michael spoke firmly as he turned Nikita to face him. “That is the only way that we leave this house tonight.”
Nikita stared at him. “I’m not a child.”
“And you aren’t in control,” Michael firmly declared back to Nikita. She lifted her eyes and he wasn’t sure if he saw relief or shame. Michael stroked Nikita’s hair back and kissed her forehead. “Together, this will be ok, Kita.”
Nikita stayed right where she was. Michael took a moment and looked at Walter. “I want you to find a safe location for Adam to go with Jason. I don’t want Adam giving the replies… but he can help Jason spoof Ben’s account this evening. Because Nikita is right… it will be a distraction we need.”
Nikita rocked forward and Michael nodded his head to Walter to tell him to leave. Michael waited for Nikita to lift her head to stare at him. “I can do this.”
“Then tell me about the flashes,” Michael challenged Nikita. She shook and jerked around. “I don’t need to talk about them… to make a mission plan.”
“We aren’t in Section, Kita. This isn’t a mission,” Michael pointed out as he placed his arms around Nikita’s arms. “You are still stuck there in so many ways… and if I let you do this… you’ll stay stuck there.”
Nikita pushed at Michael and managed to get to her feet now. “You want to know what I was remembering? How about the first mission? The first time that I got slapped by Section… the first time I was ugly for the sake of doing something that was reportedly for the good for the world… “
Michael lifted his head and watched as Nikita stiffly stepped back. “Or better yet… how about when my mind wasn’t mine? When Madeline took away my emotions… stripped me of who I was… the things that I knew that were missing… you were missing to me… and inside I knew it… I was inside and my body was acting without me…”
“Kita,” Michael whispered from his spot on the floor. He was ready for Nikita when she rushed towards him and started to strike him, but not with any real force. Too easily, Michael got his hands around her and squeezed Nikita tightly. “You don’t need to do this to yourself, Kita… and you are having these flashes that are taking over you right now… because you are tired… because there is a little girl involved… and because you want to be done with this…”
Michael felt the tears again and he started to rock. But this time was different. Nikita wasn’t trying to hide from what she had remembered. She wasn’t trying to force the thoughts away in order to work on retrieving Veronica.
And this time, she would go to sleep.
