Michael walked into the kitchen and Walter lifted his head from the table that he had assembled a lot of supplies. He looked behind Michael and Michael touched his ear. “The units you gave me.”

“And where is the other?” Walter inquired and then paused. “You put it on her while she was sleeping?”

“I need to know that she is sleeping,” Michael stated gently as he sat down at the table. He heard the doorbell and Jason went to the door. Michael looked at the papers and frowned. “Is this actually enough to keep them busy with other organizations?”

“Tom has some other files… Jason should be getting them shortly,” Walter nodded his head up and down. “He said that he could take care of this.”

“A big group would get the child killed,” Michael shook his head from side to side. “Just the three of us… with you staying in the van… that’s the safe way.”

“Where is Nikita?” Nat asked as he walked into the kitchen. It was clear that he hadn’t been to sleep yet. Michael placed the papers down and folded his hands over them. “She is sleeping.”

“So… you are planning this?”

“I’m taking the lead at this time, yes,” Michael confirmed as he sat there as Jason went back to his computer and Walter picked up a bag and moved away.

“Nikita is the angel… we need her,” Nat complained and Michael didn’t move. He waited as he could feel Walter and Jason pretending like they weren’t paying attention, but they were. “Who do you think trained Nikita?”

“But you didn’t do anything once you were free… she has been the angel!” Nat pointed out and Michael slowly stood up. He moved to Nat and leaned in closer. “I had a child to protect. And Nikita is different. But right now, she isn’t in the condition to take the lead. If I was doing what was right for Nikita, I’d be telling you to use the police.”

Nat leaned away from Michael and pushed his hands through his hair. He was so tired and that was another reason why Michael wasn’t pouncing on him as badly as Michael wanted to do. It wasn’t a pride thing with Michael. It was a protection thing that Michael knew that he wanted to do with Nikita. She was going through a lot of emotional things and at some point in the future they were going to start looking for their daughter. By doing this, it was taking her close to that place that she finally was breaking away from.

“If she is that bad, is it even right to do this?” Nat finally asked as he looked around the room and saw Walter and Jason turning their heads away. He was probably asking a question that both of those men were thinking.

“She’ll protect Veronica, Nat. The two of us together are better than any Special Forces group from the police… and once we are out there, Nikita won’t allow this other stuff to bother her,” Michael indicated as he walked back to his chair and sat down. “But you can’t be more involved… you already know too much.”

“What do you mean by that?” Nat asked but Michael turned his head. He could hear Nikita’s breath starting to grow ragged. Michael looked at Walter. “Explain to him that he can’t know any more.”

“What? Why can’t you explain to me?” Nat blocked Michael from leaving. Michael placed his hands on Nat’s shoulders and firmly moved him out of the way. “Nikita needs me.”

Michael knew that Walter would explain to Nat that since he was a police officer that he shouldn’t know anything more about what may or may not happen. Especially since Michael was afraid that there would be some sort of body count on this mission. The intel all seemed to indicate that and with the way that Tom was reacting, it was anticipated to bring along some body bags. That reality was hard for Michael to comprehend. He didn’t want to go back there, but he also knew that Nikita needed to do this since she had promised to get Veronica back.

Nikita was starting to moan and cry in her sleep. Michael hastened his pace and got upstairs into the room as Nikita started to fight against the sheets. Michael stroked her face and waited for Nikita to wake up. It was rough as it didn’t happen instantly. He could see Nikita’s silent screams and he waited till Nikita finally registered his touch and tried to sit straight up in bed. “Shh… you just went to sleep, Kita.”

Nikita squeezed her eyes tightly as the tears continued to flow. Michael shook his head. “Please tell me what you were dreaming off. It will be so much safer for us tonight if you tell me.”

Nikita turned her head towards Michael and slowly opened her eyes. She licked her lips and shook her head negatively from side to side. But the she parted her lips. “When I was… you know…”

Michael waited and Nikita hid behind closed eyes for a moment as she whispered. “Gelman…”

“When they took you away from me,” Michael spoke as he struggled through the knot in his throat. Those were the worse times to think about.

Nikita’s blue eyes opened again as tears fell silently, “I think I know how it feels… to be completely unable to communicate… I can see it as if I was there, Michael… but the actions… the words…they weren’t what was in my mind… but I don’t know if my mind was there back then…”

“We may never know, Kita. But you were still inside. That’s how I got you back… so maybe it is easier to think that you didn’t remember living like that until now because now it is safe… because it means that you were still fighting what was done to you,” Michael rasped and Nikita took Michael’s hand into hers. She squeezed it and leaned her head back to look at the ceiling. “I can’t have a flash tonight, Michael.”

“You won’t.”

“You can’t be sure,” Nikita shook her head but she didn’t look at Michael.

“Kita,” Michael whispered as he used his other hand to make Nikita turn her head towards him. “I know you. You’ll be fine.”

Nikita cleared her throat several times and even sat up slightly. “I broke my promise.”

“What?”

“The plans of not thinking about our daughter until the New Year…. I couldn’t do it once I saw Veronica’s picture… I don’t think our daughter would look anything like her… and I know our daughter is older… but I can’t help but think about our daughter… and what I would do if someone kidnapped her…”

“You would move the world like you are going to try to do tonight to get Veronica back,” Michael pointed out as he pulled Nikita towards his body. “But you can’t do that if you are tired, Kita.”

“I tried to sleep once you put the comm unit in…”

“You weren’t supposed to feel that.”

“Really?” Nikita half chuckled as she shook her head. “I was Operations, Michael.”

“I know,” Michael whispered as he stroked her face. “But I think we both hope to forget that detail soon.”

Nikita couldn’t agree more. She leaned against Michael. “I know that you have a mission to plan… but I don’t want you to leave me.”

“I’ll stay.”

“You won’t,” Nikita shook her head slightly. “And that’s fine… just stay a while, Michael.”

“Of course,” Michael kissed Nikita’s forehead. There was so much here that they were going to have to talk about further, but for now, at least it was said on this level. This made Michael feel even better in knowing that Nikita was going to be fine once they started to go to retrieve Veronica.
