Michael stared at the spot that Nikita left as she turned her attention on the small girl who was cowering behind the covers on the bed. He thought that he was running the plans on this mission, but instead, it seemed as if Nikita had done something.
But when?!?
“We are here to take you home, Veronica,” Nikita spoke as she touched the blanket and tried to reach for the girl. But she shrieked and moved further away.
“Get the girl… we need to get out of here… before that gang…”
“The Los Dios,” Nikita supplied as she settled on the edge of the bed with a knot forming in her throat. She didn’t feel guilty for not telling Michael that she had put one of the Los Dios men outside of this compound late last night with a note that he was a gift. She didn’t feel the pain from the stab wounds nor any effects of losing blood that Michael had yet to notice.
“Get the girl and let’s move before we get caught in the cross fire,” Michael directed as he turned his attention back to Jason. “Do you know how many are coming into the compound?”
“They haven’t breached yet…. You don’t want to start out until they are on the way in. They look like they are going to make an assault on the south entrance,” Jason reported. “I haven’t heard from Nikita.”
“We are in the room with the girl,” Michael spoke and Nikita turned to glare at him. “Veronica. Her name is Veronica.”
“We need to be leaving,” Michael stated again and Nikita turned to reach for the girl. This time Nikita got the blanket down some and something flashed her mind quickly. It wasn’t a memory of any sort. But it was probably something that she dreamed about often, a little girl that was hers, that didn’t know her. Veronica continued to try to move away.
Nikita shifted and pulled out the doll. “Your momma gave this to us so you can have this… What’s her name?”
Veronica grabbed it out of Nikita’s hand and pulled it against her chest. “Lolly.”
“That’s a nice name,” Nikita whispered as she moved closer. “Do you want to go home?”
Veronica nodded her head up and down even as Nikita heard Michael hiss her name again. She wasn’t going to rush this. Veronica was already traumatized enough. She stroked her hair and nodded her head. “You can hold onto Lolly… and I can hold onto you… Can I do that?”
Veronica shook her head negatively from side to side. “I’m… scared…”
“I know,” Nikita whispered as her heart ached. If her daughter was like this she wouldn’t want someone to just pick her up and run. It would make it worse.
“They are starting to move… I see about ten of the Los Dios moving towards that entry point,” Jason directed.
“Michael… Nikita… time to vamoose!” Walter’s voice showed some concern about what was going on and what the delay was.
“Kita, get the girl and let’s move,” Michael spoke again as he stepped away from that spot that he had been in when he realized that Nikita had done something that he hadn’t known about. He was upset about it, but his mind also knew that right now they weren’t running out of here because attention was split.
“She is scared! Would you want someone to grab our daughter and just run if she was scared?” Nikita fired out as she glared at Michael. She shook a deep breath and looked back to Veronica who seemed to be cowering a bit more. “Your mom wants us to take you home… and we go to get you pass the bad guys that took you… Can you be brave just a bit longer?”
Veronica leaned forward and looked at the door. Michael turned and shot as he saw Veronica’s face. The man went down and Michael realized that it was probably the head of this group right now. He looked at Nikita and moved towards the door. He couldn’t leave that body in the hallway. “I’m leaving in two minutes.”
Nikita reached for Veronica and she reached out one of her arms. Nikita felt the strain on her back as she picked up Veronica. She was not as small as she appeared on the bed and the weight made Nikita’s shoulder now scream out in pain. But Nikita didn’t let it show. She kissed the top of Veronica’s head and turned. “Keep your eyes closed until I tell you to open them…”
Nikita shifted and now she pulled out her gun. She walked towards Michael and he took the lead, walking strong into the hallway. He took up a lot of space to protect Nikita and the girl as they went. The guns were heard on the other side of the house and Michael hooked his head to indicate that they were going to down the same stairs they had come up. Michael was starting down and jumped over the railing and onto the other stairs as a guard came up them. Michael knocked him and then pressed the gun into the stomach before releasing it.
Veronica didn’t hear that gunshot.
“Keep your eyes closed…” Nikita whispered again as she rushed down the stairs and stopped at the bottom. She gasped some as she felt the sheer pain threatening to weaken her arms. Nikita sucked it up and moved to the side of Michael and they continued to move.
But soon, they felt the fight going on around them.
“Jason…” Michael hissed as he needed some help here.
“There are so many Michael… but that is your easiest direction to get out... You just have to get through the next hallway and you are on the outside,” Jason directed.
“Walter… can you move closer to the side that we are leaving from?” Nikita questioned as she shifted Veronica in her arms. Michael turned to look at Nikita, concern crossing his face. “You ok?”
“Use a snap bomb…” Nikita tossed her head over her shoulder. “They are coming down quickly… it will stun them…”
Michael pushed Nikita in front of him and pulled out the supply. He rolled it down the hallway and pushed at the small of Nikita’s back. They both started to run quickly.
“Hostile!” Jason shouted as the door in front of them opened.
Both Michael and Nikita shot the incoming guard.
Soon they were outside in the dark. Michael pulled up and looked around. “Get out of here… go straight… I’ll provide cover.”
“Michael, no…” Nikita shook her head.
“Unless you were able to plant land mines out here too… you have no say in the manner,” Michael peeled away from Nikita’s side. Nikita started out as Michael had told her, dread in her stomach.
Then she felt the wind shifted and suddenly behind her a man went down. The shot was from the large wall that Nikita was heading towards. It wasn’t Michael.
Walter was just pulling up to the gate and Nikita stopped and dropped her to knees, not sure if the next shot was going into her. “Michael…. There is another unknown.”
“I’m not unknown,” Davenport’s voice hissed. “I’m pissed that you two thought you could go play operative games without me. Get your asses out of that compound…. I got both of you covered…”
Nikita snapped up to her feet and she staggered forward a few steps before gaining her momentum again. She felt tears coming from Veronica wetting her shirt and Nikita tried to pick up her pace. She heard Davenport squeeze off another shot and she heard another snap bomb go off.
Walter opened the door to the dark van and she slipped into it and got to the back seat with Veronica. “Ok… you can open your eyes, Veronica… we almost have you home…”
“I want my mommy!” Veronica cried and Nikita nodded her head. “I know… We are going right to your home… I promise…”
Nikita looked at the front seat to Walter. “Where is Michael?”
The door to the van opened and Michael slipped in and slammed the door shut. Walter hadn’t turned the van off and he took off. He jerked his head to look up to the mirror so he could answer to Michael and Nikita. “I didn’t tell Davenport what was going on. I know that you two wanted to respect his weekend with Ellie… he came roaring up on a motorcycle just as you asked me to move…”
“And I’m leaving… and going to the house,” Davenport chimed in on the communications unit. Nikita leaned back against the seat and turned her head as she winced.
“Glad you found the unit I left for you,” Michael spoke as he pulled off his jacket. “We’ll regroup at the house.”
“No,” Nikita snapped from the backseat. “Veronica goes home… now.”
“Nikita…” Michael turned to look at her. Nikita shook her head. “She needs her mother… that’s where we are going.”
For a long time Michael stared at Nikita and she stared back. Nikita shifted and pulled Veronica back up onto her lap and forced Michael to look at the girl. “Fine.”
Nikita nodded her head and sat there, pain threatening to take over, but she wouldn’t allow it.
“And we are going to talk,” Michael turned his head forward to look at the streets that Walter was driving at the speed limit.
“I had put that man outside that house before you took over, Michael… I needed a big distraction… and a way to not have this thought to be the angel…” Nikita commented as she looked at the back of Michael’s head, knowing the feeling of disappointing him too well. Too often he turned away from her like this on missions that things didn’t go as planned.
“But you left materials…”
“That ultimately prove once and for all that Manny is innocent,” Nikita identified. “Yes, I did.”
“Then the angel will be known,” Michael retorted as he didn’t even look back.
And he didn’t see the translucent look of Nikita’s skin and the pain that was taking over.
