Nikita looked over at Veronica and wiped at the tiny tears that rolled down the girl’s face while she was asleep. They were almost to the girl’s house, but the toll of the kidnapping and no sleep while being held, caused her to sleep fitfully. She clung onto Lolly and Nikita wished that she could have had her mother in the van waiting for her.
Michael shifted and pulled off his jacket. He tossed it over the seat and didn’t look at Nikita. She winced and looked towards Michael. “It was the right thing to do, Michael.”
He didn’t respond. He didn’t even look at her. Nikita licked her lips before pressing them tightly together. She was going to say something more when Veronica started to wimpier in her sleep. Nikita turned towards her and pulled her head towards her chest. “It’s ok, honey… you are going to be with your mommy soon…”
Veronica didn’t wake up but she did settle slightly, but the tears were still falling. Nikita didn’t know how this was going to scar this girl for the years to come. Nikita knew that her life was haunted by so many things and she was concerned that Veronica was doomed for a fate like that. This kidnapping could ruin her future if Lisa wasn’t careful. “It’s going to be ok… you are almost home…”
It grew silent in the van as they turned into the residential plan. Nikita watched as Walter expertly took the turns before pulling into the driveway of Lisa’s house. Michael jumped out of the van and slammed the door shut without looking back at Nikita and Veronica.
“The neighbors don’t know anything is going on. We don’t want Lisa to reunite with her daughter outside,” Walter spoke from the front seat. Nikita looked at Walter and shifted. The pain was growing in her arm, but Nikita pushed that behind all of her other thoughts. But she didn’t know what kind of condition she was in. Nikita saw the jacket that Michael left behind and knew that she had to get that on. She reached for it and shrugged it on as she dropped her head so Walter couldn’t see the pain.
“Can you get the door for me, Walter? She is still asleep,” Nikita questioned as she looked up to the front seat. Walter nodded his head as he got out of the van. He stopped to look at Nikita as he opened the door. “He is going to get over what you did.”
Nikita pulled Michael’s jacket tighter around her. She needed the protection. “Are you cold, Sugar? I could have turned the heat up.”
Nikita looked at Walter and he shook his head. She wasn’t responding. He exhaled. “He should know that you probably couldn’t figure out a way to tell him… and he knows that you are still stuck there.”
“Stuck?” Nikita rasped and Walter shook his head slightly from side to side. “Still stuck in Section…”
Nikita wanted to protest, but she moved and pulled Veronica into her arms. She started out of the van and stood carefully next to Walter. She swallowed passed the nausea and then jumped as Walter shut the door. “He didn’t give you much of a chance to tell him what you had already set up.”
“It doesn’t matter,” Nikita murmured as she held onto Veronica carefully.
“It was a damn good idea…. Those two factions are going to do each other in… they probably will never know that a girl was held there… It was a damn good idea,” Walter admitted as he looked at Nikita. She had done what she had to do to make sure that they could be protected. It was damn smart. No one was going to think that the angel had been there and there would be no exposure. “He is going to get over this, Sugar.”
“I hope so,” Nikita whispered as she moved to start towards the house. Walter pulled on her shoulder and she wondered if he could tell that she was hurt. But when she faced Walter it was clear that he didn’t know. “I want to get her to her mother.”
“You two have been through so much… this too will pass,” Walter whispered and Nikita turned away and started to walk again. She moved slowly not just because of her pain, but because Veronica was starting to wake up. Nikita pressed a kiss to the girl’s forehead. “Veronica… look where we are…”
The girl’s eyes fluttered open but then shut again. Nikita knew that right now, Veronica wasn’t going to wake up. But once inside, it would be different. As Nikita climbed the stairs to the porch, Michael opened the door. Nikita stepped inside the house and she saw Rhoda first.
Then Lisa.
“Oh, Baby!” Lisa cried out as she moved forward towards Nikita. Nikita handed over Veronica just as Veronica woke up with the sound of her mother’s voice. Nikita wrapped her arms across her chest. She never got to hold her daughter like this. Her daughter had never wrapped her arms around her. This love was not something that Nikita had with any child and she had never felt the relief of knowing that her daughter was ok.
“She doesn’t appear to be hurt,” Nikita informed everyone as she stood to the side of the hallway. “But we do know a doctor… we would prefer that we would use our source first.”
“We’ve explained that,” Rhoda spoke as she stood by Lisa as it was clear mother and daughter had not heard a word.
“Thank you,” Nat rasped from behind. Nikita blinked but didn’t say another word.
“The men that were involved… they won’t be an issue any further, Lisa,” Michael spoke as he stepped forward. Nikita stood there and watched as Michael touched Veronica’s head and then offered Lisa a smile. Nikita swallowed back her own tears as she couldn’t allow it to be seen.
“You…. You both saved my daughter… and that’s… that’s my life…” Lisa sobbed as she looked at Michael and then to Nikita. “I don’t know how to repay you.”
“You don’t,” Michael stepped in front of Lisa, blocking Nikita’s eye contact with the mother. Nikita dropped her head slightly and looked off t the side. “You don’t know us.”
“I know… but it doesn’t seem right…” Lisa stammered and Michael away.
“Michael… Thank you,” Nat spoke again and Michael jerked his head up and down. He turned on a dime and walked out of the house. Nikita looked towards Nat and he tilted his head. “I don’t know how to thank you… Nikita… I hope…”
“Don’t,” Nikita shook her head from side to side. She moved forward and touched Lisa’s hands. “The whole truth about what happened to your husband will come out. The evidence will be found.”
“What?” Lisa whispered as she looked at Nikita.
“The whole truth… not just the fact that he wasn’t dirty… but the fact that he was almost close to bringing down the whole corruption…” Nikita spoke as she looked up at Nat. “I would expect some changes at the office, Lieutenant.”
“My officers?” Nat rasped and Nikita turned her head slightly before looking back. “Higher.”
Nat shook his head and Nikita cupped Veronica’s face gently. She never got to cup her daughter’s face. Nikita stepped away. “Love your family, Lisa. They need you.”
Nikita rushed out of the house and stoically forced the emotions away. She pulled out her phone to call Jason for a few moments. She was stalling going to the van and the man that was fuming inside of it. Nikita found the conversation to be too short and she exhaled deeply.
She walked to the van and glanced at Michael. He was against the wall and he looked at the empty seat beside him. Nikita flicked her eyes at the seat and then went to the back where she had been.
“Kita…”
“I’m not ready to talk to you, Michael,” Nikita snapped as she leaned back against the seat.
“We have to talk… about what happened… I was stunned… and I was upset about why you didn’t tell me,” Michael declared as he leaned over and shut the door. Walter started to move the van right away. Nikita turned her head and looked out the window. Inside that house was a happy family.
She didn’t have a happy family.
“Adam will be back when we get back to the house,” Nikita spoke as she took a moment to pause and look at her phone.
“You already contacted them?” Michael asked but Nikita didn’t directly answer. She continued to stare out the window. “He was trying to breach my system.”
“Of course,” Michael snipped as he turned his head towards the opposite window. “It’s all about protecting your security.”
“That’s what happens when you are still stuck inside of Section,” Nikita snapped back even as tears rolled down her face.
She wasn’t proud that she was stuck there and she wasn’t sure she would ever get free.
